@@virginiacreager4331 grout is similar to putty, and is normally the "fill" between laid tile. But he used grout creatively, as though it were stain, instead.
I refinished a 40yo birch wood dresser with varathane white wash and it looks way better than the yellow finish it previously had. You can see subtle amounts of pinks blues and purples on the birch.
Not sure if you noticed, but another person commented that the grout could crack and fall off over time. I'm thinking this would be particularly problematic on a ceiling 🤔
Thanks! Now I know what I'll be doing with my blah picnic table and benches in the Spring. I actually look forward to it! I never thought of the grout and wood combo. Thanks bunches!
These are gorgeous. I'm trying to figure out the most practical way to whitewash my kitchen floor. It's very dark brown right now. I've got some leftover boards and I can't wait to try these out before committing to the entire floor. Thanks for the inspiration.
Awesome video. I just did a whitewash wall unit in red oak. Stained it with water based gray stain wiped real good so it wasn't to dark. Then brush on white water based paint not diluted and quickly rubbed it in and wiped off enough to the finish I wanted Gave it a nice weathered look.
Just what I’m looking for, I didn’t consider chalk paint because of its solid color, but adding the water and wiping off will give me the finish I’m looking for. Many thanks!
Great video I love white washing the background on my signs. A lot of times I “paint” on a vinegar base that I keep in a jar with steel wool. It gives it a grey/rust base and works well with the white.
great variations. Thanks for the looks! cheaper and faster than all of those options is to use KILZ or Bullseye primer, cut with water as needed. Plus , no need to pre stain, it will stick to most anything
Regarding the sound level -- if you right click on the video, there is an option at the bottom of the popup menu for "Stats for Nerds". It will show you how above or below TH-cam's "loudness" target is. In this video's case, it is -21.8dB. Considering that TH-cam recommends videos to be -3dB to -5dB below the target... well, that's _extremely_ quiet. Most audio editors these days should be able to handle "loudness" pretty easily. It will be either "LUFS" or "loudness" in at least Audition and DaVinci Resolve Fairlight. The key is to set the target loudness / LUFS to -14 and then try to stay -3dB to -5dB below that target after normalization. There are _many_ ways to hit a target loudness level (not volume!!) without it being built into the editing app. The most brute force would likely be to just upload the video to TH-cam in private mode, check out the "Stats for Nerd", and then just add enough audio gain to being it up to -3. In this video's case, you could add 17dB or 18dB of gain and then it would sound roughly as loud as every other video.
The grout blew me away. I'm a avid wood worker and have never even thought about grout. Interesting. I'll have to do some test panels on a ash table I'm building.
I just added some terps to white enamel paint. I was using old recycled boards which had a huge amount of character. You can also use other colours and then get amazing results. It basically costs nothing.
Very cool finishes. I tried the varathane white-wash stain with a project today, very pleased with the result. Do you think polyurethane would look good as an extra layer of protection, or would it add too much sheen?
Anyone else find the volume kinda low? Wondering if I seeing it too soon on my phone and TH-cams processing isn't done yet, or if I'm losing my hearing.
Great video sir. Do you have to apply pre stain application before adding the color you want. I really want light gray but it keeps turning strong and not what I want and maybe I'm going with white wash. Any tips plz
There's a piece of weathered plywood that was once painted white where I walk the dog every day. It's part of a shed, so to take it would be theft :) But I think that would be such a great affect to recreate.
I'm planning on using red oak ply panels on the wall. After using the technique you described for red oak. Would I then need to seal with a clear coat?
Would the grout option be difficult on dark cedar 2" ceiling? The room is 15' 15' and it's in an 1866 log cabin. The ceiling makes the room so dark. I want to white wash the ceiling.
Looks great ..lots of ideas ,but i have 2 walls thst have old tounge and groove boards that has a lacquer or varnish on it.. i want to white wash them but how? Thx
I am in the middle of doing exactly what you're talking about! I sanded all the varnish and stain off. I just did my last treatment with regular bleach. Trying to decide on what to use for white was or pickling stain. Then will put a water based polyurethane then I'm gonna add a white wax over it all. I have tongue and groove Yellow knotty pine. And half of the boards are really yellow. Although, I do like his grout idea!
We have cedar panel in our older church (35yr) the walls have a shine I’m assuming a poly on top I’d love to do the plaster technique you did on your pin. Do I have to sand it prior :( it’s an A-frame and ceiling to floor cedar planks. I’m worried I have to do that first.
I have a 70's? Lane coffee and end tables that I sanded the top which might be maple, it's very light with wood inlayed shaped diamonds. Which white wash technique would you recommend? I plan to paint the legs.
I was wondering. I have stained pine board wall that I would like to grout. Will the grout be ok on the urethane finish or do I have to sand down to natural wood
will this white wash work great on docks? I want my dock on the water to look white washed to give it that old natural look but how does it do in outside weather?
Good morning I actually type of question I watched your video and I am new to the white washing never done it before and I have a customer wanting a project done did you say you can use white paint as it Cause flat paint still has a shine Or do I have to get the varithane white wash
Can you whitewash over already stained but not polyurethane birch/maple wood? I have a built in that is a darker stain then i want and i thought applying white wash would be the effect that i was looking for.
Does anyone know if we can "whitewash" over our darker commercial vinyl plank at our store? I love the look, but between salty winters, and general ambient light, I'd like to brighten the place up a little bit. Thanks!
I need help! I have 80s orange oak doors with tons of poly on them. I want them to be natural bleached like the popular furniture color right now and I’m not sure what would be the easiest. I have tried sanding that takes for are I haven’t even finished one door I have tried stripping it’s so messy I have tried a heat gun… not safe lol any help!??? I have a million doors in my old huge house that I want done this way!!??? Thanks for all the tips in the video
Any tips on how to whitewash stained wood that hasn’t been sanded. Have a large bookshelf that would very difficult to sand to prep. I think the wood is pine.
I'm thinking of whitewashing the interior of my garden log cabin that's been standing about 15 years now. Can anyone give me any advice as to any considerations I might need to make when so doing, given the likelihood of there being moisture in the air? I want a nice transparent/translucent finish, as I only want to add 'light' to the space where daylight is lacking, not conceal the wood completely.
🆘 Comments section advice pls 😅 Really interested in the Fir 2x4 thick chalk and water method (potential moms birthday gift), but would I have to seal it with something since it will be exposed to sun 365 days and sometimes a little bit of moisture??
Never would have thought of using grout as a finish like this...super cool Ben!
I didn’t understand this part. Did he paint the grout on ? I’ve never worked with grout, I thought it was like a grainy putty ….

I have to say, that grout turned out great! I may be tempted to do my pine ceiling with this technique! Thanks!
Not sure if you noticed, but another person commented that the grout could crack and fall off over time. I'm thinking this would be particularly problematic on a ceiling 🤔
Its plasticized
Thanks! The tip about doing the white wash in similar lighting conditions is a good tip.
The grout one is a gem, and is much more controllable/durable than plaster based filler. Nice one mate... xxx ;-)

Love the different techniques on the range of woods. I love to know your ideas on Hickery to get the orange out and white old-world look.
That grout idea is pretty slick.

1/2 white latex paint (I like to use kind of an off white oat type white) and 1/2 water, mix it up. paint it and then wipe it off. easy
What do you use to seal over that?
Great video I love white washing the background on my signs. A lot of times I “paint” on a vinegar base that I keep in a jar with steel wool. It gives it a grey/rust base and works well with the white.
Verry interesting( with a German accent))
Yep. The longer the steel wool is in the vinegar, the stronger the "antique" gray it looks. It's like magic.
What 😮never heard of this. Thanks for the tip.

Awesome! I felt like I was watching a magic trick!! They all looked great but the cedar was my favorite!!

Wow, this is perfect timing. I was just looking for white finishes for an upcoming project of mine
Me too, love white washed.
Unforgiven, for an spelled prone . I have white washed rustic long tiles in my home, lovvvve it, with
two dogs, a breeze!!
I use white decor wax. It's super nice and is very durable!
The grout blew me away. I'm a avid wood worker and have never even thought about grout. Interesting. I'll have to do some test panels on a ash table I'm building.
Perfect timing I was in need of white wood! Thanks
So quick, clear, and helpful! Thanks for sharing!!! 🤍🤍🤍
oh white wash ! So bright and beautiful . thank you! Blessings :)
What would you use to seal the one done with grout? Loved the look 😍
Same question!
Same question
Love the grout 💡
Best tutorial I’ve seen! I appreciate you being straight & to the point!!
Good video! Several different ideas, great job.
I love the ideas!!! It’s so helpful for me with my project!!! 🙏🏻👍🏻thanks a lot!!!
I really like the grout idea. I will try that one. Thanks!
I just added some terps to white enamel paint. I was using old recycled boards which had a huge amount of character. You can also use other colours and then get amazing results. It basically costs nothing.
Really good ideas and good work
So helpful! I must admit I died a little inside when you painted the Cedar‼️
Agreed
Very cool finishes. I tried the varathane white-wash stain with a project today, very pleased with the result. Do you think polyurethane would look good as an extra layer of protection, or would it add too much sheen?
You may try the matte finish.
Very little sheen but will still add protection.
I think I'll try the grout effect to give my old pine doors and skirting a less orange look. Any reason why that might be a bad idea?
Great ideas. How about white stains on eastern white pine? Love the grout idea
The crate that is holding all of the wood is cool too! I need something like that for my classrooms canvas art this summer!
Such a cute idea to use them as photography backgrounds
Ben you so helpful. Thank you for this. Clear instructions. Every detail shared. Thank you
Anyone else find the volume kinda low? Wondering if I seeing it too soon on my phone and TH-cams processing isn't done yet, or if I'm losing my hearing.
I'm watching on my PC and had to turn it way up, so it's not just you.
I think it's a little quiet from the source. I'm on 75% volume and it sounds about normal
same - just this video is way quiet
Been saying this for the past three videos. Super annoying to raise the volume all the way up to hear anything then commercials kick in very loud.
Thanks, everyone!
Can I use wood conditioner before the wax?
NEW SUB…I really like this video!! Lots of great options and results. 👍👍👍👍
I read somewhere that real whitewash is best to use; it has something in it the preserves the wood and discourages termites.
Thank you for a great video.
Is there any substitute for grout like white cement maybe?
Extremely helpful and informative! Thank you!

I am attempting the grout now over pine,I stained with ebony and dark walnut as an undercoat.

AWESOME video, very inspirational. Loved your ideas and how they all turned out. I am most definitely trying these out one day. Cheers.
Did u use wood conditioner?

Nicely done. Thank you.
Thinking of refinishing my Douglas fire siding on my house, any idea how the white was and grout would hold up to Canadian winters?

Kal
Instead of grout would Spackling work?
I have a white painted shiplap, was hoping to achieve a light chocolate color. I was thinking of applying a wood stain on top. Will it work?
"How hard and how consistently you wipe, determines the evenness of the stain"
can you do this over 80's kitchen cabinets or do you have to strip them?
Thanks interested in rough pine that I’m trying to lighten
Have you ever done yellow pine?
This is the only whitewashing that's acceptable. This video seems very useful for people moving into a new house or renovating an old house.
will this white wash work great on docks? I want my dock on the water to look white washed to give it that old natural look but how does it do in outside weather?
So popular over oak for any stain or just white?

I want to know this too.
In regards to the grout application I have varnished wood planks currently do I have to strip the varnish first before applying the grout?
Same ? I need to know we are updating the chapel for wedding rentals
Amazing

always gets me on these american videos... 'about 120 grit'.. it was or it wasn't, or do you make your own sandpaper
Thank you
