I'm a nail tech that's been trying to enjoy my boyfriend's miniature hobby as well. I've been using Swarvoski stones for some bling and chrome powder for a mirror or opal effect! There's also so many nail sticker options. I've absolutely covered my miniatures in Hello Kitty nail charms and stickers LOL

For the stamping plates used in the video, I think using specific stamping plate nail polish would work. I've used gel nail polish on miniatures, but you have to be careful because it is thick (similar to an epoxy resin) and can easily seep into the miniature's details

I'm so glad there's a video of this! I've been experimenting with water marbling and stamping techniques on minis too! Stamping works best with uv gel cured polish rather than mini paint for sure. Needs a thick consistency and something that doesnt dry too quickly. Nail polish on minis is also a cool way to get some awesome effects.

And there I was, thinking I've discovered something amazing by using fine-powdered Chameleon type nail pigment with a warpaint medium to make magic, color changing weapons and shields. That first tool almost feels like cheating when thinking about doing color transitions, Imma get me one, if I can't get that effect with a makeup brush.

Harlequins were absolutely the perfect choice for this style of video. I like the stencil for card suits, if I ever get around to making a Void Dancer kill team I'll absolutely be looking for something similar!

For anyone who wants to do stamping: works better if you use thick nail polish or a similar paint. If you want something specific for minis try the enamel ones (I'm pretty sure it's the same broader paint type), but tbh you can often find a better color range for cheaper if you use nail polish. And remember you're not using acrylic, so be careful with it, and test on bits you don't need too much.

Might be a good idea to ad some drying retarder to the paint for the printing technique!

We have been using nail art for a long time. Sorry nobody told you. We use everything from tattoos on action figures to tiles in dollhouse kitchens, the tiny rheinstones are brilliant as are the studs which have multiple uses.

I'm using nail art stickers with a chess board design for my bases - they have the perfect scale for a tile effect!

I actually think that the sponge tool is a solid 5 stars.

The first blending texture looks like it could be great for weathering, specially leathery surfaces like long coats and robes. I'm thinking Imperial Commisars, Krieg, LOTR rangers, Aragorn...

I know this is a bit old but I think I know why the stamped patterns aren't transferring/picking up well! Stencils tend to perform poorly with polishes/paints that air dry or dry relatively quickly, I think using an oil based paint as you said would get much better results and a matte gel polish might be worth a try too (although I'm not sure how gel polish would react with the other paints and plastic)

Could try mixing in acrylic retarder in for the last product to get a longer working time?

+1 for this. Increasing dry time could totally bring out the full potential for this idea.

the sponge tool would make adding pigment powders for weathering sooooo much easier and would probably save a lot of the extra pigment you waste with a brush application

Great video! I think these tools are much like other “gimmick” type products, they can be useful but have their place, if u have a project and u can see exactly what u want to use it for then they would be worth while, I worry the main issue is the miniature shapes will make it hard to apply them tho, the sponges are almost like a drybrush the other 2 I think would be especially good on larger models, maybe an imperial knight etc, even drednaughts and things 🥰👌🐶

Very neat! The mail art sponge (blending tool) is one I think I’ll try.

Was checking out actual nail polish videos. 3 things. First, wash the metal stamp plate bc the blue sticker leaves a residue behind. Two, I wonder if ink will work better. But the best and final thing, you can allow the actual stamp to dry and put a polish or gloss film on top to make a transfer. I’m excited to try all this stuff soon.

I had forgotten, but anarchy stencil! They do a lot of motif, they were made for airbrush but could be used as you do too. Or this stencil could be used with airbrush.
Also, wall painting trick (I'm also saving videos from other arts) is when using making tape (or stencil here) is to first use the base colour and then the new one, makes for more clean finish.

Can't believe there aren't more videos for this. Saw some nail art plates the other day and through they would be perfect for painting super intricate patterns you sometimes see on space marine chapters like White Scars or Charcharodons.
Thankyou for this tutorial, never even picked up nail polish before :D
Did you ever figure out a way to get the really detailed ones working?

I have a friend that used nail art decals on a bust as tattoos. So looking at other crafts can help a lot!

I know that I am very late to this video, but for the stamping (for anyone interested), I tend to find that gently rolling the surface of the stamper picks up the design much better than pressing it down. It does also help when you use a paint/polish that doesn't dry too quickly, and do one quick swipe of the scraper (don't worry if there's a little excess, the stamper probably won't pick that up) :)

The one you rated 4.5 stars, I think I will use them to paint some patterns on my Hedge Knights from A Song of Ice and Fire Miniature game, I can picture it working well on the cloaks of the knights themselves and even on the fabric covering the horses.
Thanks so much for the tip.

My son is just getting into painting miniatures. I do my own gel nails and have a massive set of all the great stuff. I automatically thought that gel nail art supplies would be what he should use until I found that no one is using them in the miniature painting world…I am wondering why?! This is the first video I have found trying some. Is there a reason gel nail polish with an LED light isn't being used? Or even just mail polish and all thendifferenr options, colors and designs? Is it just that you don't mix boy
Toys with girl toys? Is there an actual functional reason why? I’m wanting to buy him a whole set of paints, brushes and supplies for Christmas, so I am honestly wondering?

I would love to know the answer to this too! If using gel paint would we cure the same? The thought of a hole mirror or a chrome hole mirror for my daemonettes is just too much!

I got a huge pack of nail art decals on Amazon a few years ago. They have been super handy too. I hope all is well with you, been a while since you've put out a video.

Brilliant! I wonder if the stamping would work better with some drying retarder mixed in so they don't dry out so quickly? My wife is big into nail art, so we'll have to experiment. Did you find it was easy to clean the acrylic paint off of your stamping plates?

Yeah poking it around pointy plastic it may not last long, I think all these be good for larger models or stuff with less “stuff” on them, like space marines
