@@Harmonic14 amen! He has nothing on Alex. I don't care how good is solos were some or this great songwriting ( even though Rodger Waters was the Real Genius of Pink Floyd) but Gilmore ALL TOGETHER, at some point, gets bit overblown and I'm sick of not hearing about Alex. Doing a nice vibrato on a pentatonic scale does not even remotely compared to Alex. And that's just the lead guitar! Alex lifeson though is obviously way more versatile L Rhythm guitarist!!
ithout Roger Waters, what was Gilmore come up with but the fucking album at the end of the eighties and the one in 1994? That's not real Pink Floyd! That's activate Gilmour solo band that's glorified by a different name to sell records

All he has to do is learn a few Rush songs and it told me everything else I ever need to know about rock and roll from Pornos to Pyro's to fugazi to Metallica to The Beatles to Jane'd addiction to everybody ON GUITAR. Once I learn those Russians I never had to learn again and it's because I'm really a depth at sounding stuff out and stuff, but still--Rush, THE Beatles. and Metallica taught me how to play guitar. Eff yeah! ( had a little too much Foose tonight but it makes you feel good even at 46th to have been taught by these great bands essentially(

@@chippchipp1 Not so sure. I do think they have some similarities. I am a little more impressed with Alex and his range. He applies that big, emotional sound to so many styles. Take a sampling across Gillmour and Lifeson's works and there is just much more range/variety in Lifeson's. That in no way distracts from the mastership of Gilmour. I just have to give the overall nod to Alex there.

    • @kriscarter1389
      @kriscarter1389 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@epsilon6516 I think it's some kind of F chord with an alternating E in the bass. The way I learned it (whether it's correct or not), is to fret the low E, B, and high E all on the first fret. Then strike the low E letting it ring out, and play quick staccato notes on the high strings (a reggae-like upstroke). On each round, you'll alternate between fretting the low E (on the F) and playing it open, and it just goes back and forth. Remember to quickly mute the high strings each time to give it that staccato effect.

I get what you mean, and all these yars later am still enthusiastic about their music.
I was pretty much an Alex Lifeson guitar clone for a couple of years. So much so I had to literally stop listening to them for years so I could develop my own style.
But in western music there are typically only 12 notes, and having learned to play every note he put on all of their albums up to Power Windows, I can say I am 100% certain they don't have even one song with all 12 of those notes.
Just saying that because new players need to understand how easy it is, and in particular to not be intimidated by music theory. Music theory is essentially as easy as A, B, C, D, E, F, G and 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. Put those together and you have the music theory of the key of A minor. After that, it's mostly just a matter of moving that same thing around to different places on the fretboard.

brocks clips i’m a bass player, bass sure is showed up by lead guitar, but it’s not “underrated”, we’re the ones that hold the whole song together, (but so does every other instrument) but the lead guitar should be louder, otherwise the song would sound weird (unless it’s primus or something)

He's still one of the greatest, even though others might rate him lower than he deserves. I believe that it's much more than playing super fast and/or playing something technically difficult that makes a great player. It has always been like that since Handel and Mozart, once we left the Baroque behind.
I've heard faster solos and crazy speed metal, but once it's over, neither the song nor the solo really sticks around in my head, because its just not memorable, in terms of lyric, emotional melody. So much just tends to be "grind it out and blow you over" guitar work. But Alex is an artist compared to most that are just painters.
We most likely all can agree that it's not the number of notes per measure that makes a song or a solo great, but rather which exact notes you play, how, when and with what tone.
So much of Alex's work is so memorable, like every note of his solo on La Villa, or the crying battle between his guitar and the violin on Losing It, which just screams misery, pain and the pathetic sadness of old age.
Here, he nails the sounds of a car sliding around a corner on a dirt road, and if listen (I was fortunate to restore and own an Alfa Romeo, so I hear it) you can hear the " accelerate, clutch, shift; accelerate, clutch, shift" pulsing going on in the undercurrent. It's in time with " WELL weathered leather; hot METAL on oil, the SCENT of the country air" all the words in caps are on the acceleration, than the quick clutch and the shift (which is two clicks, once coming out of gear and than clicking into the next gear) so it's on " lea-ther) is into second, and "oy-ill" is second into third; than into fourth on " air" than there is a fill by Neil,( because it's a four speed) "sunlight on chrome" you can hear Geddys voice as he gets nervous, because now we are downshifting at speed, "the blur of the landscape" as we go back into fourth gear and nail the gas "EVERY NERVE AWARE!!!!" because now we are freaking flying over these gravel curves and are going for broke and you can than hear the big slide and Alex dives into the "chase" of the solo.
Really, this is just light years ahead of what most bands were ever capable of.
Is you haven't, read the story that inspired Neil to wrote this song. It has the car chase, the mad dash, spinning and reversible course on the road to double back, I mean, they nailed it! In the original story of course, the car was an MG, but the whole feeling of the story was kept, just put into the future a bit.
That's why Alex is worthy or being called great.
And yeah, they wrote the song in a couple days at Le Studio.
    Amazing.
