Forget about the most talented, multitasking front man bassist, forget about arguably the best drummer to have existed on the planet. Let´s just take a moment and listen to the perfect sounds Alex Lifeson has created. What a fabulous world he has designed with his guitar!!!
Alex is by far one of my favorite guitarists and had a profound influence on me as a player. His expression, creativity and phrasing is amazing. Emotion pours from every note he plays, and he doesn't feel the need to shred on every song. He gets the point across with just a few notes. He is original. This takes me back to the many times I saw Rush in concert. Alex, Geddy and Neil shared a unique chemistry that will never be seen again. RIP Professor.
You are right and we will never see the talent level that Alex, Geddy and Neil all had and could blend together so effortlessly. All 3 of these guys were great on their own, but when they came together, they were untouchable. You can't teach that kind of connection and chemistry.
Fun fact: he used his Telecaster (I presume the one he used in New World Man) for most of the HYF tones (not the lead parts.) Also, I just built a guitar partially inspired by this Aurora and the Evans pickups play the biggest role, I got about 90 percent to the glass with EMG S pickups (I used the humbucker sized ones.) It’s such a gnarly guitar sound...
@@Newgrassrock I don’t hear the Telecaster in HYF but I hear it all over Power Windows. I believe that HYF was the Signature since you can clearly hear the in between position sound.
I am old enough to remember when Jimmy Page, Alex Lifeson, and Eddie VanHalen were all in their prime and putting out some of the greatest music ever recorded. I can honestly say these 3 men will never be replaced by today's generation. Today's generation of musicians does not have the talent like this anymore.
My favorite guitarist. Marathon and Mission, I mean come on... Not crazy fast like the ones you will claim are the best. Its that they are so perfectly composed for songs.
Alex is, easily, one of the 10 most sensitive and musical rock guitarists of all time. Also got excellent acoustic guitar skills, with beautiful works like "A Farewell To Kings" or "Hope". And all of this in the context of a band with two musicians like Neil Peart and Geddy Lee, who handle a big amount of complex lines and rhythmic situations, leaving a very small room for him. Finally, I appreciate his extreme versatility to mutate his sound along with the band necessities and musical targets during 40 years of career. Alex fan, for sure.
You bought tix to a rock concert, after the show, you felt enlightened, and you realize you were at the symphony.........whoa, ......what a RUSH..............
I saw Rush in 1991 and got to hear Alex, Geddy and Neal live. It was the best concert ever and seeing this video really brings back the memory. This was the best concert I have ever seen and it was such a great experience. The lighting and sound just blew us away and left my jaw on the ground. Thanks for the memories Rush! We miss you Neal!
That would have been Roll the Bones tour... it was a good one. Bravado, with its ending jam, was totally new... and I remember they did a great medley toward the end that included part of Anthem, one they hadn't played in who knows how many years. It was the last tour where they still sounded like 80s Rush, before kicking into the grungier, more stripped down sound that began with Counterparts.
Mission, for me one of the most perfect live solos I have ever heard, its just great, love that tone. I saw them live in that period and I will never forget the image of Alex playing the 'Great white' even if he later distanced himself from Signature guitars.
King Lerxst played outstanding, remarkable and extremely touching solos during the 80's.. great decade in my opinion for him to express himself with those notorious masterpieces.. all those solos he wrote at that era, are just timeless..!! He's a true guitar god!! 🙌🙌🙌🔥🔥🎸❤️💯💯🙌🙌🙌
I couldn't tell you how much firewood I burned on the shores of lake Michigan listening to this guitar GOD A warm summer night sipping a couple of beers taking it all in Alex is my favorite guitarist of all time And Rush is my favorite band of all time have been since 1975.
Nobody really care about shredding anymore. Most of it sounds dated and shallow now. Alex's playing has aged far better; this kind of work is timeless.
not really. Shredding is bigger than ever.. virtually no one mentions alex in discussion of the greats. Yes hes very good and underrated, but thats it.
For the first time recently, I’ve finally started appreciating this era of rush, past the 80’s production. For one, unpopular opinion, Power Windows has some of Neil’s best lyricism. Second, as for Alex, another unpopular opinion, the fact he had to fill in space around lots of keyboards forced him to write some of his most creative guitar parts. Grace Under Pressure, the whole album, is probably my favorite example of this. As well, Marathon and Mission are awesome in the same way. I’ve heard plenty of power chords and blues, and there’s plenty of that in early Rush. Without this era, you wouldn’t get Between the Wheels, the orchestra-like composed guitar in Red Sector A, and the driving lines in Manhattan Project and Mystic Rhythms. If the 80s production is unbearable to your ears, do what I do most of the time and listen to their later live albums. In my opinion, that’s peak Rush on those albums. Especially the mid to late 80s era rush, I think it sound even better in more recent live recordings than the album sometimes.
No question at all about Rush ,, they are the most greatest act in our lifetime .. they gave their heart and soul to their complex music and devoted fan base
Of the many guitars phases he's gone through, the Gibson semihollow ES-355's, the Hentor strats, the Les Pauls, the PRS's, I actually really do like the thin piercing Signature guitar phase he went thru for a few years. I'm in the minority.
The Signatures made sense for the sound they were going for at the time. I think where a lot of issues come in is how appropriate they were for the late 70s material they were playing live
@@whipchorus3726 Having seen them live in every incarnation, I can understand that. Signature was the ultimate guitar for "Marathon" and totally wrong for "The Trees". PRS's were right for everything.
Its to cut through the thick keyboard tones so he needed a more piercing tone via the active pickups. Luckily, according to the band, they worked that all out with technology and working together but I know for a fact that Alex was not happy in the band at this point. It was well rumored he wasn’t happy with the band going so far in the keyboard direction, although now he will probably deny it, at the time it was indeed an issue.

Count me in... Lifeson's guitar work in this period is, in my opinion, some of the best he's ever done. This is my favorite period of RUSH music and I think they peaked around Hold Your Fire/Roll The Bones. From Moving Pictures through Roll The Bones, every CD just seems to get better. I am a huge fan of 70's RUSH as well and I don't see why they panned Caress of Steel, I loved that one too. Rush pulled the sword out of the stone with 2112 and never looked back. The opening guitar part of 2112's Soliloquy really sealed the deal for me!
I’m only 30 so I have only experienced two releases by them (Snakes and arrows and clockwork angels) but I love their mid 80s stuff. It’s very clear the band was more producers and had moved past the 70s guitar style (which was admittedly dying anyway...unless you got into metal or hard rock). Anyway, I never lived in the 80s (born in 91) but I love their work there. Grace under pressure may be my favorite album by them

Interesting video. Captures what is more or the less the height of the Signature guitar sound for Alex. Not my cup of tea. But it was an era where he needed to find a way to fit into the sonic scope of the heavy synth sounds that occupied much of where the guitar normally is (from interviews of Alex). I personally love his live sound from "Stages" on. I prefer the live versions of all their songs in the live recordings from 1997 onward. My favorite guitarist of all time.
His solos are beautifully constructed not just a series of scales.

Yet he can shred like a madman when it is called for, like La Villa Strangiato.....
I wish Signature guitars were still around. I've been a fan of the guitar sound from the "Hold Your Fire" album. Such glassy clean tone!
