Probably my favorite Rush song. Another brilliant guitar solo by Alex Lifeson!

    One of the highlights of the Moving Pictures tour is the animated film that played behind them during this song. Just hearing the guitar part alone is enough to give me goosebumps!!!

    I used to hesitate to say Alex and was my favorite guitar player bc of Jimmy Page. I get that we wouldnt have Alex if not for Jimmu but I like Alex more. Plus hes a humble goodball like so many of us and not afraid to hide it.

    He definitely influenced me - his open chords with drone notes… and how he picks chords - it’s more symphonic gives the illusion of more than one instrument

    Many guitar tracks - some overdriven some clean - some with chorus…

    Imagine them playing this at Le Studio with the snow outside and fine French food at every turn. I love the pictures of the studio from that time and I love the vibe the place conveyed... just this unpretentious coolness. They put in the time, the energy, and sacrificed a lot for where they landed, and we're all better off because of it.

    The tone Alex got out of those Gibson ES’s is so beautiful and unique. He was a prodigy. A true guitarist virtuoso.

    i just dont see how they came up with a song like this and it's not like one guy sat down with an acoustic, wrote it himself and then showed the others; their stuff somehow came from all three jamming together and then just Neil would come up with lyrics to fit the song and to think they did this over and over for yrs...AND Alex always just happened to come up with leads that fit each song perfectly, I dont see how they had enough time to accomplish all this especially since they were almost always touring. Rush is like a miracle.

    Love that smooth amp distortion, doesn't have the high end fizz of a pedal and you can hear alex is picking pretty hard, but there's also a lot of clarity

    What exactly does he play during the chorus? The part that has: "Down in his barn, My uncle preserved for me an old machine, For fifty odd years, To keep it as new has been his dearest dream"?

  • @TheRealThomasPaine1776
    @TheRealThomasPaine1776 ปีที่แล้ว

    Even if I haven't heard this song in a year, images pop into my head and I can always see myself jumping off the train into the fields, and later, pulling back the tarp that covered the car in the barn. That's a big part of why it's a great song.

  • @TheRealThomasPaine1776
    @TheRealThomasPaine1776 ปีที่แล้ว

    He's still one of the greatest, even though others might rate him lower than he deserves. I believe that it's much more than playing super fast and/or playing something technically difficult that makes a great player. It has always been like that since Handel and Mozart, once we left the Baroque behind. I've heard faster solos and crazy speed metal, but once it's over, neither the song nor the solo really sticks around in my head, because its just not memorable, in terms of lyric, emotional melody. So much just tends to be "grind it out and blow you over" guitar work. But Alex is an artist compared to most that are just painters. We most likely all can agree that it's not the number of notes per measure that makes a song or a solo great, but rather which exact notes you play, how, when and with what tone. So much of Alex's work is so memorable, like every note of his solo on La Villa, or the crying battle between his guitar and the violin on Losing It, which just screams misery, pain and the pathetic sadness of old age. Here, he nails the sounds of a car sliding around a corner on a dirt road, and if listen (I was fortunate to restore and own an Alfa Romeo, so I hear it) you can hear the " accelerate, clutch, shift; accelerate, clutch, shift" pulsing going on in the undercurrent. It's in time with " WELL weathered leather; hot METAL on oil, the SCENT of the country air" all the words in caps are on the acceleration, than the quick clutch and the shift (which is two clicks, once coming out of gear and than clicking into the next gear) so it's on " lea-ther) is into second, and "oy-ill" is second into third; than into fourth on " air" than there is a fill by Neil,( because it's a four speed) "sunlight on chrome" you can hear Geddys voice as he gets nervous, because now we are downshifting at speed, "the blur of the landscape" as we go back into fourth gear and nail the gas "EVERY NERVE AWARE!!!!" because now we are freaking flying over these gravel curves and are going for broke and you can than hear the big slide and Alex dives into the "chase" of the solo. Really, this is just light years ahead of what most bands were ever capable of. Is you haven't, read the story that inspired Neil to wrote this song. It has the car chase, the mad dash, spinning and reversible course on the road to double back, I mean, they nailed it! In the original story of course, the car was an MG, but the whole feeling of the story was kept, just put into the future a bit. That's why Alex is worthy or being called great. And yeah, they wrote the song in a couple days at Le Studio. Amazing.

    Used to play this on the bass and Im pretty sure the guitar is much harder! I'll start working on this song soon. I know I won't be a great guitar player but even if I can mush my way through it, it will be fun.
