I was stationed in Okinawa, Japan while serving in the USMC and had an internet connection with latency so bad, playing online was impractical. FM4 was my go to game during that time because it was the only game that I could enjoy online functionality with friends and family sending paint jobs and tuning setups back and forth. It was also the last Forza game that I truly enjoyed and would not hesitate to purchase DLC for. There was something odd about that game and it's DLC, it felt like it was some kind of Premium product I was purchasing and was excited by each new release.

I had some DLC for FM4 but since the servers well and truly died it gives me an error every time I try to select my Sauber C9 which was honestly one of my favorite DLC cars for having F1 performance before any open wheels touched the series.

I can see how Turn10 thought it might have been interesting, but the switch to "Drivatars" made AI opponents much less fun to play against by making them both (subjectively) worse and less distinct. I knew exactly that M. Rossi was going to squeeze me to the very limit at every hairpin corner, but I have no idea what kind of driving style NoobScoper2004 is going to have.

Also I loved that you could very literally turn off the entry requirements and enter any car, in any race, in any category. Didn't matter if it was woefully over or underpowered you had that freedom.

The greatest defect? Basically, it's compatible only with the Xbox 360 wheel and there's no PC version.
But actually, for someone who is into simracing, like me, was beautiful having every, perfectly settable, car in arcade mode. By this way, I used to plug ny joypad, choosing a car and a track and I started hotlapping.
Offcourse, physics and graphics were already pretty good, bots were better and was introduced the rivals mode, that let me to enjoy online game.
Guys, I'm sorry, but someone who plays computer sims, isn't interested in growing a carreer on console, and the online races of this kind of games have too much airborne cars, or eventually noobs

I know I'm an outlier in saying this but I have a profound admiration for car games and sims which put effort in licensing and including regular, run-of-the-mill, pedestrian cars as well as lesser known international car brands.
There is a charm to being able to drive a subcompact hatchback you actually have driven or seen in person, to drive in a grid full of MPVs, to bare through the excruciatingly long 0-60 time of a FWD mid-00's Euro station wagon.
I know some may say "why would you want to drive something as bog standard as a VW Polo or Toyota Corolla" but that's just it - every arcade racer is lined up with your 200mph+ exotics. The charm of a sim is in attention to driving dynamics, vehicle detail and authentic racing experience - all with an abundance of different classes and types.
Same way you don't only expect to fly 787 Dreamliners in Flight Simulator, you also appreciate what a Cessna might have to offer.
Totally get your love for Forza 4 Kacey.

I've resorted to using a PS2 emulator for GT4 and Enthusia.
The other bit of fun with Forza was upgrading the cars, something absolutely none of the PC titles do.

Ah yes, Forza Motorsport 3 and 4. I honestly can't tell which I liked more, because they're just both great games with different sets of content. I wish Rally di Positano came back in 4 with the full layout for example.
The soundtrack is also fantastic. Lance Hayes did a great job with pushing this unique style for these few entries that the later games didn't really have, starting with Forza 5. Now Forza just doesn't feel special anymore, and I think you did a great job of explaining why: because there's more sports cars than just cars.

To put into perspective the "Japanese bias" in Gran Turismo's car list, consider this- GT4 had about 750 cars in total, and 121 of them were Nissans. And that's not even counting all the tuned Skylines and 350Zs, or the likes of Infiniti. That's at least 16% of the list dedicated to one manufacturer.

I think one of the best parts about this game is the diversity of the car list. It's not just a shallow palette of normal cars, historic cars, and supercars. There's actual depth in the car list.
The inclusion of low-powered commuter cars is something you normally don't see in racing games. What makes it even better is that they expanded on it rather than just adding 1 or 2. Examples include the Chevy Volt, Nissan Leaf, and Ford Ka.
This was also demonstrated for classic cars. Along with icons from Chevy, Ford, and Dodge, FM4 had cars like De Tomaso, the Abarth 131, the 330 P4, and the Saab 99 turbo.
Also, they didn't just add all the generic Lamborghinis and Ferraris that most know about. FM4 included lesser known brands like RUF, Spyker, Lotus, and Weismann. Even coachbuilt cars were included (Bertone and Spada).
Overall, the developers clearly made an effort to do more than just scratch the surface of each type of car. I feel like that's missing in most of the modern Forza games.
FM4 is my favorite Forza by far. My affinity for this game is enhanced by "Legendary Ratio" and "Paris Rouen."

Full game is only a fiver from CEX, you'll usually find a unused Launch Bonus car park dlc code inside too haha
If you get lucky and find the GOTY edition, you'll get the above + the September Penzoil Pack and the American Muscle Car Pack.
As you say, the Ultimate edition was DLC codes for the cars which 9 times out of 10 have been redeemed. Very rare to find one that hasn't as you paid more for it just for those DLC's lol
I did have some unused DLC codes for sale awhile ago so they are out there still.

FM4 really was that good of a game and to this day it's still my favorite racing game. I went back to it recently on a fresh profile and quickly noticed the game's amazing progression. In newer Forza games you can do something RNG based and immediately receive something that just takes away from reasons to continue playing the game. As an example, in FM6, the first level up reward had a chance to be a Veyron SS. By contrast, in FM4 your choice is between some hatchbacks that are slightly faster than the city cars you start with. Even better though is driver level 2 reward where you're given a choice of tuner cars. In order to compete in events from the event list in them, it seems like the game incentivizes you to upgrade them to a higher class. I feel like little aspects of the game show how much care went into making the game. I mean, mic recording vehicles when newer games typically have much less realistic synthesized car sounds? The series has turned into more of a cash grab imo. That's not to say the newer games are bad- definitely not. However I don't see the subtle details in the places that really matter. What's the point of having a beautifully crafted open world with lots of content if there's barely any reason to do said content along with driving and progressing through the game just not being satisfying? I'm sure some people can get some of that from newer Forza titles but at least personally it's not even close to the same feeling as FM4 conveyed. Don't really have high hopes for FM8 to fix modern Forza problems, but I'd love to be wrong.

    Nice work with these reviews!
My fondest memories of the 360 generation were GRID and its sister DiRT (specifically 1 and 3. 2 was weird). Even though the simulation aspect was more arcade oriented and stylistic, the fun factor and creative variety were so refreshing, over the Forza series’ more consistent, perhaps even stagnant, evolution between 2-4. Loved all these games don’t get me wrong, but Codemasters’ entries to the GRID and DiRT franchises leave only happy memories in my mind.

  • @robadoba

Thank you, you literally put my thoughts about FM4 in words. The reason I don't love newer racing games as much as I loved FM4 is the car list. It's always the same kind of cars, no diversity. In FM4 you could drive the most "normal" and unspectacular cars like the Peugeot 206, Chevrolet Spark and even a VW Fox, like seriously, which other new racing game lets you drive a VW Fox?
I'm just tired of always having to choose between 70's-90's icon cars and 2020's super cars. It's getting boring at this point cause the car list's always the same in every game. I don't want a Mustang or RX7 as a starting car, just give me some standard, cheap commuter cars!

    • @haaxxx9
      @haaxxx9 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You put my words out on paper why I don't like the newer Forza games!
Everything just became more multiplayer focus and needlessly need to give you the best cars for the game to offer for just breathing. The events are there but there is little to no motivation to play em cause you get nothing in return... I dropped FH4 after 30+ hours and people get mad at me why I don't like that game (Played FH3 for over 300+ hours and enjoyed it for the most part.)
I despise multiplayer in Forza (Beside getting into groups that do care about the game) cause people drive horribly that ends up getting me slammed or punted into a fucking wall and the assholes drives off like it's nothing... Over 100+ hours dealing with that and I am done with that bullshit! Top it off most people who have those high HP cars reaching the Class level cap can't control them what-so-ever and need to use most/all the assists to barely tame them. It's fucking embarrassing that I can pass em and get a good gap behind me with a car that's 1/2 the HP that I used. Wanna curb stomp those causals out of spite... Piss me the fuck off. I'm glad I had friends who DID cared about the racing aspect and didn't treat FH3 like it's burnout.
Even though I didn't play FH1 yet I adore the enjoyment of that game starting yourself in a Volkswagen Colorado and working your way up into the ranks EARNING more Money/Parts/Events for you. You HAD to work for it and that was the best thing about Forza! Now it's gone replacing to Normie causal shit... So boring...
Also the Forza Community is bias as hell and can't form an opinion that is negative about the new games... Or else you get deemed at a "hater" and backlash saying all kinds of dumb shit. Hope almost every community get a permanent shutdown one day, Can't STAND those asswipes!

by far my favourite racing game of all time, here are my top reasons why its my favourite.
firstly, the handling dynamics are such a perfect blend of sim and arcade, I especially love the way my 800kg Miata feels when being absolutely ringed around rally di positano.
secondly, the addition of consumer and low level cars such as the Toyota Aygo or Ford Ka even the car my brother used to own was on there a very slow but fun ford fiesta zetec (not an ST model)
third, the game had a great selection of tracks, in particular Fujimi Kaido a Japanese mountain track. A Japanese touge track is absolutely yearned for in not only forza but other racing games like Gran Turismo.
I could write much more but ill keep it short and simple, I cant find another game that satisfies my need for a good simcade as much as this game did.

The map is huge and beautiful and changes with the seasons. It has team games which is some of the funniest and most exhilarating gameplay I've had in a racing game, and there's still plenty of racing to do too. The entire map is also complete filled to the brim with little speed challenges while you're just exploring. I've definitely appreciated the more consistent uploads, as your videos are very well made, and I enjoy hearing your takes on various games.
I will say though, I guess it's a matter of preference but I still think that best car list goes to GT5. I see the multiple car variants as a positive, as I see it almost like a museum when I can drive and then read about the subtle differences between my 6 2003 Subaru Legacy's. And while the Japanese bias in the car roster is a plus in my book, the game still features enough obscure or ordinary European cars to tickle my fancy in that regard.
I guess all I'm saying in this ramble is that I really appreciate the roster in GT5, and one of GT5's main themes surrounds the beauty of the automobile, in a manner that I don't get as strongly from the Forza games. Also if you ever get the chance I'd recommend picking up a copy of the Apex Ultimate Car Guide that came with the collectors edition of GT5. It's a good read and again puts into perspective GT5's reverence to the automobile.

Fantastic video! My 1st Forza game was Motorsport 3 and I have a soft spot for this era of the series. Outside of the difference in the car roster, I think you hit the nail on the head in terms of the driving model of the newer games. I've been playing a bit of FM6 as of late as I think it's the most complete of the XB1 versions, however, I have difficulty at times with cornering and the like. I've gotten used to it, but I know if I went back to FM3/FM4 and then back to this one I'd have to re-learn how to play for sure. I think the older games nailed the handling and as a result the "fun" factor.
P.S. I think Driver San Francisco would be up your alley in terms of car selection. A lot of "regular" cars you can teleport into and what not.

Well, I don't know. With all due respect, I disagree. Especially with the part about Horizon. 3 and 4 are playgrounds, just like 1 was. I love Horizon 2 as well, and think it has the best map in the series, but the structure of the game is a littlebit more restricting than I would like it to be. In a game like Horizon, I don't need directions. I just want to get in a car I love, and do whatever I want at that specific time. And there's always something to do. Also, this kind of structure also fits the whole music and racing festival vibe much better.
As for Motorsport, I think 6 is my favorite. Maybe only because I played that the most, but I really enjoy it. I know every corner of every track in that game. And I feel like I wouldn't have paid attention to that as much as I did, if the handling model was more... forgiving (? idk).
And for FM7. Damn that game has such a cool vibe. Even with its UI quirks, I tend to get lost in it for very long sessions. I do play the carrier and some multiplayer here and there, but what I enjoy the most in that game is just driving around. I did several 10 lap sessions around the Nordschleife alone, in free play mode, in different cars, without any AI opponents. Man, these sessions help so much when I need to empty my mind. It isn't super difficult, so I don't get frustrated, but it's difficult enough to not let me think about other stuff, because if I take my eyes off the screen for a few seconds, I usually end up in a wall.
But anyway, this is just my opinion. Keep the great videos coming 😉

Different strokes! I'm sure that freedom is why FH3/4 are so well regarded. I personally prefer a more directed experience a la Horizon 2, but that's my preference. Ultimately, the newer Forza games are fine, but they aren't the same as the 360 titles. They fill a different niche.

6:36 you say "their focus..." and a Ford Focus appears. =D Well played! My path with the Forza series was a late one. I bought an Xbox 360 some 5 years ago only so that I could play some Forza games and other Xbox exclusives. I had a blast with Forza 4 and Horizon 1. F4 was a great experience and Horizon reminded me of the awesome TDU. Haven't played another Forza Motorsport, but after playing some 20 hours of Horizon 4 I just find it too silly for me, so I'm very excited about TDU Solar Crown. Thanks for the video, great work! Cheers from Portugal 🇵🇹

Hit it on the nail. While I can appreciate a good Köningsegg or Lamborghini, what I really love to drive in games are the normal cars, the cars I've seen a thousand times in real life. I can drive the Volvo C30's and 850's, Saab 9-3's and Citroën C1's that are a daily sight here in Sweden, the type of cars that I'll probably drive in real life the day I get a license. I can drive the exact model of Nissan Micra my dad used to drive. Those are the things that make a racing game truly fun for me.

"Project CARS 3 moment" is an interesting way to describe it. Considering PCARS was a sim that turned their back on their core audience and now SMS are classed as a joke.

For those who miss these games, you didn’t grow out of racing games. They grew out of you.
Also, even the original Forza Motorsport had Drivatars so they’re not completely gone. They’ve always been here.

This is and will probably always be my favorite in the Forza Motorsport series! They did everything right with this one! I also wait for the day they come back to this style, hopefully with the upcoming reboot! 😊👍

While FM4 ended up being a proper game, I remember at launch being less than thrilled due to how little it felt different to FM3 on paper. Sure, there were 90 new cars out of the box, but at the expense of about 90 that didn't make it in including all of Porsche. That was until DLC started creeping in at it's cost. Combine that with the 360 push for Kinect, I credit a lot of 4's good to the roots it had from 3 and what was offered for DLC and not what it brought to the table on it's own.
Being said, on point with the new games having a lack of unique cars that don't fit into that supercar/race car cookiecutter they've found. It's not sexy, but some of the most proper fun is running a basic car at 10/10ths and be the underdog.

Forza 4 lead to both cars I've owned. I've had an E34 BMW 5-Series and a W212 Merc E-Class, both which I spent HOURS driving in FM4. I've spent hundreds of hours in FM4, and it is BY FAR the best in the entire series. Slow car fast was the best part of the game. It was an absolute riot getting an F-Class car up to an absolute monster of an A600 and using it in tag infection online.

Listen. I feel this same way with Horizon 3. It felt so unique for a racing game, with fun gameplay, good minigames, and worthy DLC maps and cars. The game was great. But then, the absolute behemoth of unacceptable nightmare that is FH4 released, and that’s when they lost their touch. If a game with the freedom of FH3, the fun of FM4, and some of the newer cars and game mechanics such as auction house and the new livery features, you would have the holy Forza grail.

The latest Forza game I played was Forza Motorsport 4.
I never got an XB1, and never had a powerful PC.
At least it's also entertaining to watch people play it.

Forza 3 is the peak for me because of the tire models. The tires actually took 2 laps or so to actually get up to temp, in the newer games you go into the first corner with all 4 tires at operating temp
