The Pallavas can be credited with bringing in the Dravidian style of temple architecture. The evolution of this style can be seen in four stages.
-> The Pallavas introduced the art of excavating temples from rock
Mahendravarman I introduced rock cut temples which can be seen in Mahendravadi, Mamandur, Vallam and Tiruchirappalli.
Caves were cut out and temples made.
-> The second stage was brought about by Narasimhavarman I. Monolithic rathas and mandapas were the highlights of this stage. The mandapas had beautiful sculptures on its walls.
-> The third stage shows significant evolvement in temple architecture with introduction of structural temples and usage of soft sand rocks. Typical Dravidian temple feature like pyramid shaped temples were found in this era. Rajasimha was the ruler credited with introduction of structural temples. Kailasanatha temple at Kanchi is an example of this style of architecture.
-> The final stage saw structral temples like Vaikundaperumal temple and Matagenswara temple built by the Later Pallavas.
The Pallava era was a great age of temple buildings. We can see a gradual development and evolution of the style of temple architecture throughout the three lines of Pallava rulers.

    Name K PRAVEENA,
India is well-known for its art and architecture. Besides various aspects, also varied architectural styles of our temples plays a significant role in resembling "Unity in diversity" nature of our country.
Among those, Dravidian style of temple architecture plays an significant role in promoting the identity of South India.
Dravidian style of temple architecture was actually began during the rule of Pallavas. It was a gradual changed starting from rock cut temples to structural temples in four stages.
First stage was during the rule of Pallava King Mahendravarman 1.He introduced the rock cut temples.Mandagapattu, Mahendravadi etc..,situated in present day TamilNadu are examples of the First stage.
In the second stage, the development in Dravidian style gradullay changed from Rock cut temples to Monolithic Rathas. This was took place in the period of Narasimhavarman 1.Monolithicrathas are popularly known for its name Panchapandava rathas are situated in mamallapuram.
In the Third stage during the rule of Narasimhavarman 2,Dravidian style further improved from monolithic rathas to Structural temples. These were constructed with Soft sand rocks. Mamallapuram seashore temple, Kailashnath temple at Kanchi are the remains of finest structural temples.
Fourth stage was during the reign of later Pallava rulers.Vaikundaperumal,Mukteswara temple, Mathangeswara temples in Kanchi were belonged to this stage.
In these four stages Dravidian style of temple architecture was gradual changed from rock cut temples monolithic rathas to free-standing temples.

The pallavas introduced the art of excavating temples from the rocks. The Dravidian style of temples also comes during this period. It was a great age for beautiful temple constructions. It was a gradual evolution starting from the cave temples to free standing temples.
The devolepment of temple architecture can be seen in four different stages.
The ROCK CUT TEMPLES introduced by MAHENDRAVARMAN I. Here they carved the rocks and try to make temples. These type of pallava temples are seen at places like Mandagapattu, Mahendravadi, Thiruchirappalli etc.
The next stage was MONOLITHIC RATHAS and MANDAPAS. NARASIMHAVARMAN I took the credit of these type of wonderful architectural monuments. Here they used one single rock to make there temples. Mainly there were five rathas, called as Panchapandava Rathas, five different styles of temple architecture. The Mandapam contains beautiful sculptures on its walls. Mahishasuramardhini Mandapa, Thirumurthi Mandapa , and Varaha Mandapam were the major sites.
RAJASIMHA introduced the STRUCTURAL TEMPLES. Soft sand and rocks used for the construction of these temples. The Kailasanatha Temple at Kanchi and Shore Temple at Mammallapuram were the examples.
The last stage of the Pallava art is also represented by Structural Temples built by the later pallavas. The Vaikunda Perumal temple , Muktheshwara temple and Matagneswara temple at kancheepuram were major temples.
From these types of architecture we can understand that the Pallava era witnesses a transition from rock cut temples to free standing temples gradually.

The Dravidian style of temple architecture was introduced and perfected during the Pallava period. The evolution of this style of temple architecture progressed through four stages namely from rock-cut temples -monolithic temples - early structural temples - later structural temples.
Mahendravarman I introduced the rock-cut temples where carved from rocks. These cave temples were primitive and are seen in places like Mandagappattu, Mahendravadi, Mamandur, Dalavanur, Tiruchirappalli and Vallam.
Monolithic rathas and Mandapas were introduced during the period of Narasimhavarman I. Panchapandava rathas shows five different styles of temple architecture. Notable temples of this period are Mahishasuramardhini mandapa, Thirumurthi mandapa and Varaha mandapa.
Structural temples were introduced by Rajasimha. These were build using soft sand rocks. The Kailasanatha temple at Kanchi and Shore temple at Mammalapuram are examples of early structural temples.
The later Pallavas improved the structural temple design and these type of temples can be seen in the Vaikundaperumal temple, Muktheeswara temple and Matagenswara temples at Kanchipuram.
Thus Pallava rule was a great age of temple building in south India. The Dravidian style of temple architecture was developed during this age.

The pallavas were the great admirer of the art and architecture. The period of pallava reign witnessed the transition in architectural style .
From rock cut cave temples to free standing temples. Some great ancient Indian architectural masterpieces were built during this period. It was a gradual evolution from rock cut cave temple to monolithic raths and then emergence of structural temples.
    The first stage:-
This stage was all about rock cut cave temples. These style of temple architecture was introduced by Mahendravarman 1. This style templs can be seen in places like Tiruchirapalli, Vallam, and Mandsguppattu.
    The second stage :-
Monolithic Rath temples had carved out in this period. These monolithic raths are fine example of pallavas devotion towards art and architecture ,these five raths are known as Panchpandava raths
These raths are located at Mahabalipuram. The Mandapas contains beautiful sculpture on its wall. The most famous Madapas are Mahishasura mardini and varsha etc. Narasimha 1 took credit of these monuments.
    The third stage:-
The structural temple were evolved during this stage.
These temples are built by soft sand stone. This style was introduced by Rajasimha.
The kailashnath temple and the shore temple are the finest example of the early structural temples of the pallavas.
The fourth stage:- this stage of pallava's architecture was also represent by the the structural temples, built by the later pallavas .
Mukteshwar and Matagenshwara etc are the great example of this stage
Thus, the art and architecture was gradually evolved during the Pallavas reign. Their reign was the transitional phase for the Dravidian art and architecture.

    Answer:
Pallavas period was a great age of temple building .It also introduced the art of excavating temples from rock .Dravidian style of temple architecture also began in pallavas period .It was a gradual development starting from cave temples to structural temples .
This can be seen in four stages
    Rock-cut temples:
Mahendravarman l introduced rock-cut temples. They are seen in Mahendravadi, Mamandur etc.
    Monolithic rathas:
The second stage architecture is known as monolithic rathas and mandapas. Narasimhavarman l introduced this rathas .The five rathas called as Panchapanadava rathas. It signifies 5 different styles of temple architecture. Walls of mandalas contains beautiful sculptures. Most popular Varahamandapam, Tirumurthi mandapas etc.
    Structural temples:
Rajasimha introduced the structural temples. They are built by soft sand rocks. Kailasanatha temple at manchi and shore temple at Mamallapuram are examples of early structural temples.
The last stage is also represented by structural temples Mukteshwara temple at kanchi and Matangeshwar belong to this stage .
Hence the gradual evolution of rock-cut temples to structural temples (Dravidian style)of pallavas reign leads to development of temple architecture.

The Pallavas were actually the feudatories of Satvahanas, who declared themselves independent after the decline of Satvahanas. They established their kingdom in Tondaimandalam, with Kanchipuram as its capital and started ruling from 3rd century AD.
It was during the period of Pallavas art and architecture reached its peak and marked the beginning of development Dravidian style of temples. The construction of these temples went through four stages:-
    (a) It was during the reign of Manhendravarman I, caves were cut out and rock cut temples were built.Examples of rock cut temples were found in Vallam, Mahendravadi, Dhalavanur, Mandagappattu, Mamandur etc.
    (b) The second stage of construction was during the reign of Narasimhavarman I, when monolithic rathas were built. Examples include Mandapas at Mamallapuram, Mahishasuramardini Mandapa, Tirumurthi Mandapam and Varaha Mandapam. These too were built out of rocks.
    (c) Structural temples were built during the third stage by King Rajsimha. Apart for other stages these temples were built of soft sand rocks. Kailasanath Temple at Kanchi and Shore Temple at Mamallapuram occupy important position in ancient architecture.
    (d) The last stage include the structural temples built by later Pallavas - Vaikundaperurnal Temple, Mukteeswara Temple and Matagenswara Temples at Kanchipuram.
From the above evidences, it proves that the Pallava era witnesses a transition from rock cut to free standing temples.
