  • I'm sharing the DAY 2 in helsinki, and journey to Tampere! in this video.
Going to Tampere at the end... It made me tear up again when I edit this video.
I met my Finnish friend ‪@KatChatsFinnish‬ and went to Finnish traditional market, Vanha Kauppahalli! It was kinda shock to me seeing SALMON SOUP with BREAD, because I'm used to have soup with RICE. Then went to Helsingin Kaupunginteatteri(Helsinki national theatre). I got surprised to see something there too, check it in the video! Enjoy😇
Then went to Tampere... this will be on the next video :D!

It's so much fun seeing someone being so excited about Finland and all the stuff here that is mundane to me. I feel I understand how the people I met in Korea felt when I visited years ago. I really want to visit Korea again. Hope you had a wonderful time in Finland, Sol!

The green stuff in the salmon soup is dill, you can use anything to put as garnish on top of salmon soup. Typical 'Salmon fish soup' contains usually is a lot veggies, root veggies. The soup is usually made with water, pinch of heavy cream or milk.

@@SoulofSol Yes! You can find a recipes online (there is diffrent versions of it ofc) but do the dish as how you like it to be.

@@SoulofSol I usually add heavy cream in the end. Potatoes, carrots and leak(purjo) along whit the salmon. And garnish with dill(the green stuff). And lots of salt. More than you think you need becouse the potatoes eat the salt. One has to be a bit careful as to not overcook the salmon.

      @mantailuaa ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@SoulofSol And it is important to add the milk or cream in the end and not cook the soup anymore after that, only warm it otherwise the milk can curdle and it is not nice in the soup.

Thanks for the recommendation. I totally agree with you. Some people recommend putting acid into the soup, but let's see: lemons never grew in Finland and in older times globalization was not so advanced:) Well, some viking might bring a lemon or two from his trip to Vyzanty to impress everybody at the dinner table, but this would be rather an exception.
for these countries root veggies are more typical, such as carrot, onion, maybe turrnip and rutabaga. and the traditional finishing touch is dill (not coriander nor parsley). And in cold months there would be only some onions, turnips and carrots left in the stock, with luck

Rye bread and potato have historically been the staple of Finnish cuisine.
And compared to wheat things they are higher in protein and vitamins, and were main source of those for Finns when meat was more like a luxury food for holidays.
The Finnish way of boiling potatoes before peeling helps to preserve the vitamins that are mostly right in the surface.
Rye bred and also be cooked in Autumn and dried and it stays good for the whole winter. So instead of storing the grains rye was mostly baked to bread with a hole in the middle and hung on poles below the ceiling.

The green thing in the salmon soup is normally dill (tilli) and white is milk (if it's made in traditional way). Now they use also processed cheese/cream like "koskenlaskija"

Salmon soup is very easy to do. If salmon is expensive, you can try another fish in its place. Green thing is dill (tilli). It is made in milk/cream, but some do it without.

Hei! I'm so excited to watch this! I plan to visit Finland for the first time next January. I made my own lohikeitto (salmon soup) last year, and it's the best meal I ever had!! The green herb is aneth (dill), and the white thing you saw is probably cream. :)

Weirdly enough, because the Earth is round, Helsinki is kind of hotspot for flights to Asia because especially to Japan the flight (over the Arctic) is shorter than from Central Europe.

3:35 Celebration of Thanksgiving on a global scale is quite limited, only a handful of countries have it, according to Wikipedia they're "United States, Canada, Grenada, Saint Lucia, Liberia, and unofficially in countries like Brazil and Philippines. It is also observed in the Dutch town of Leiden and the Australian territory of Norfolk Island."
Makes sense as it's relatively a new festival and only relates to US history, unlike many other celebrations that have much older and/or widespread roots
Anyway happy that you enjoyed Finland again :)

Baltic Sea (not ocean) is pretty low on salt because there's only the narrow and shallow Danish Straights connecting it to the Atlantic and lot of rivers flowing down to it.
So it freezes more easily than oceans.

Was there an alive salmon? Cook's finger? What was the shocking thing?
"Weird to see the soup with bread". Whaaaat? Soup and bread go together like sausage and mustard! Rice? Oh, wouldn't have thought!
"Does the sea freeze"? Too late an advice, but there's tourist trips on ice breakers. You would see how thick the ice sea gets. It's amazing actually that those ice breakers break it. Titanic does not happen.
BTW, did you fly back over the Arctic Sea too? Please don't tell you slept (again).
"Hyvä, hyvä". Oh no. That commercial comes to mind....
