I am a first time chicken wrangler, and I'm really happy I chose Barred Rocks. I bought four pullets, and two have started laying. They are very good natured and very quiet. One will carry on a little after she lays, the other says nothing about it! They are pets and I really enjoy them.

I love my barred rock. Her name is Penny and I’ve never seen her aggressive toward any of my other girls! She is one of my LAP chickens!

I like barred rocks because they are smart, inquisitive birds - real problem solvers. If I need to introduce the flock to something new (like drinking from nipple waterers) I show the barred rock first. She'll understand how to use it and show the others. They are diggers - will put a dog to shame and the rest of the laid back flock that needs to get moving motivated to do so. I love their squeaky voices and how they talk to me. If you take a little time to tame them they are also friendly and affectionate. They are one of my all time favorite birds.

We've had Rocks for a year. Great layers and they can be very tame at times. I have a couple that are leaders (not bullies). Some of them tend to lead our flock and can put the others in their place. We've also got a group of young chicks growing and a bunch of them are Rocks. It'll be fun to watch the two groups mix later this summer!

Nice vid. Out of all the chickens I have raised on my farm, the Barred Rocks are easily the most easy going, seem to have a few extra brain cells than other breeds. They will hold their own ground if pushed around but make gentle great pets if that is what you want. Thanks!

How do they do in the extreme heat of the south? I've built a coop in an area by the treeline that's shaded all day and the run is about 50-50 (morning shade, evening sun).

@@MrEunderwood That's good shelter from the sun, chickens will find their own comfort even if it means wandering into a neighbors yard. If they are panting, just like any other critter, they're too hot but if they are in an enclosure you have done well by making sure they have plenty of shade.

We have two barred rock chicks. One is kinda grouchy and the other friendly. Trying to break the other of her broodiness gently as We Can. We call them the Chicks because of the zebra like stripes their feathers are. Friendly one has let me pet her a couple times.

My barred rocks are also bullies. They are merciless if a flock mate shows any weakness. If the other bird doesn't run after getting pecked the rocks will get a beek full of neck and twist till the other hen screams. Yes, chickens scream.

Yes, I rehomed my Barred Rock because she was so mean to my Easter Egger and Speckled Sussex, the latter of which was very submissive and I suspect died from all the stress. The eggs were great but it wasn’t worth it for me.

The Barred Plymouth Rock are large birds They might get pushy with smaller birds while completely docile with like sized birds

Do you think that the barred rocks and cream legbars would get along? They're roughly the same size so I wouldn't really expect bullying but I dont know too much about chickens.

I have always wanted chickens and was planning to get everything ready before I got them. Well last year my Daughter found a baby chick in a parking lot. Very young and not a feather on her just fluffy cuteness! She is one year old this month and I love her and she just follows me everywhere, snuggles, is very loving! But today we got my other two chickens to complete my set, lol! I got one white leghorn and a barred Plymouth rock. I think they are between 3 and 5 weeks. They have feathers everywhere but still lots of fluff around the head. I have a plan to integrate them all in several weeks. They will be penned in by themselves and my Rhode island red have free run in the yard. So they have fencing between them. Tis little Plymouth is so sweet. How many eggs do they lay per year?

My alpha hen and farm compatriot is a bully barred rock hen, she is on death's bed due to CRD outbreak. Folks, quarantine new chickens before flock integration and don't be afraid to use antibiotics in advance....I failed to do this.

Getting 4 barred rock hens tomorrow. Trading off two of my Orpington roosters for them. Started off with 4 unsexed Orpingtons and 4 female polish chicks I ended up with 3 roosters with my Orpington chicks. Mine are 9 weeks all raised together and the barred rock hens are 10 weeks. Do you think I will have any problems or do you have any tips for my flock change?

Actually everyone got along great thanks for the info on your channel made me realize I had three roosters so I could act early..... My rocks are really pretty and my remaining rooster thought so too cause he strutted for the first time. Then he gently groomed them. I love chickens........
