    Rhode Island red chickens are my favorite. If you handle them when they are chicks they become really friendly. Mine would eat out of my hand and jump up on my lap for attention and special treats. They are one of the best layers also. They make great pets. Thank you for sharing. God Bless

    You are right Sonya... a mixed flock and raising them together works out the best. Absolutely correct on free ranging as well. In fact I believe free range is very good for the overall health of chickens in general.

    My Red, which is still too young to be sure if male or female, is probably the sweetest bird in my flock; which is saying something as all of them (mixed flock) are really nice. They all like to be held, but the Red loves it. Maybe the difference is in how they are raised? All of my birds were handled and interacted with multiple times a day and still are at about 12 weeks old.

    That’s exactly how my RIR’s behave too. Rooster is fairly easy going as well. We have 25 eggs in the ‘bator right now going on about 5 days. All of my hens are awesome. They all lay fairly well. We’re getting 20-22 eggs per week out of 5 hens, which, in my experience is pretty good, esp. for a heritage breed. We also have 11 American Bresse in the chicken tractor right now at 7 weeks old, and we’re picking up 10 more from the Breeder on the first of July. We’ll be loaded down with chicks pretty soon. Lol! :-)

    I have a Rhode island red also. She's my girl and I love her to death. She attacks all the other hens and is always making that whining noise. She's such a character.

    I got 4 RIR, 4 Barred Rock, 6 Golden Comets, and 6 Buff Orpington chicks all the same day. The Comets and Buffs were sexed, but of the other 8, I only had 1 RIR turn out to be a rooster, and I only wanted one rooster, so that was lucky. Of the hens though, my Barred Rocks rule the roost. They all were handled a lot as chicks, and still are, and are people friendly, but none of them scream like that. Even my reds get along great with all the other birds, and one may be the best pet in the bunch, BUT THAT ROOSTER -- that SOB is going to be soup when I grow a replacement rooster this summer, Maybe a Buff x RIR cross (only because my eggs are all half RIR), or I may order some hatching eggs and swap 'em on a broody just to not have his gene -- he attacks everything, even my two 100ish lb Coon hounds, who would love to whip his azz if I let 'em, but they know better.

    my reds r no tea party! out of 6 that i bought as pullets i wound up w a rooster on accident! Bubba , who i cant part with , changed my whole life!! he looked like a hen! i know he loves me but he is a son of a bitch! i kept him, cause i love the fucker! and then i incubated his fertile eggs.(12 of them) 3 hatched. i wound up w 3 more roosters! damn!!!! my luck!!! purchased 6 golden comets from tractor supply to be with these babies only 2 weeks behind. now, my second flock consists of 6 comets, and 3 rir roosters! still not good! i chose 1 of them to b the boss, Cubby. Ranger is seperated cause he is gentle(a pussy) and a nice bird!(gonna breed him) kamikaze is a pain in the ass and i cant wait for him to either run away or have cubby tear his heart out/rip his face off/ do him a favor! i love them but this guy is a problem! im all fucked up w loving the animals too much! too many roosters!

    I have one rooster and one hen they're about 12 months old now but the thing is hen is not mating with rooster. Though the rooster is trying hard to mate and trying to catch her but she is shooting and running away . The rooster attempted to mate so many times that the hair behind the hen's head are totally gone now. Plz any one suggest me how to make them mate. I have already kept them in small cage to be closer to each other.

    Hello Skgibson. Best to ask local chicken friends for a recommendation, who are happy with their birds, for recommended local breeders. I personally feel you can't go wrong with Murray McMurray if you want to order online, they are also great as sexing birds. I have my first order from Ideal, and so far I'm happy, want to see how their personality comes out as adults still. They seem to make sure you get your 10% of roosters however I must say, so be prepared for that. Best wishes.. Chickens are delightful pets/ animals.

    • @SunnyChickenChick
      @SunnyChickenChick  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I prefer Murray McMurray for a hatchery order, after that, look for a backyard breeder that does not take in and re-sell birds as they could spread diseases.. Ask about biosecurity, they should have at least a reasonable plan such as not taking in other birds, and not letting buyers walk around the property without "clean" shoes..

    Hi how’s it going! We have one 4 week old Rhode Island Red and we’re worried she’s a rooster because she already has a crown and gullets. Just to be sure are all these seen in the video female? It’s hard to sex them this early on. Let me know, I appreciate your feedback!

      The yellow on hens fades in a good laying hen on the legs and vent area. It's one way you can tell who is laying, look for bleaching on legs and vent with young and old hens.
