  • We show a variety of breeds of hens and roosters that are all the same age, 9 weeks, and explain why they are either a hen or rooster and how to tell the difference at this age. Single and rose comb chicks are shown.

Another good way to tell, is to card them. No, asking them for an ID won't do anything. Slide a blank card under the neck feathers, the hens feathers will be round on the end and the rooster pointed. You can do this with younger chickens after their feathers have began to develop.

Again, this is with 2 month old birds only. Yes, your adult hen has huge red comb and wattles.. My point is that hens develop WAY later than your roosters will, as you can see with these 2 month old chicks. I have never had a hen at 2 months of age with large developing red comb and wattles, they generally start development around 4 months of age or so.

I love how you did this with different breeds because the mind can calculate the similarities and it is packed full of information. God Bless you and Merry Christmas!

Awesome video! My chicks are right at around 9 weeks and though I've seen a lot of videos on feather sexing 1-3 day old chicks, yours is the first and only one I've found on sexing them at this older age. And your tutorial is super well done and easy to follow. Thank you so very much!

Apart from chicken farming you are a great teacher... I like the little quiz you gave us with one of the roosters...

This worked for me EXCEPT for my two Rhode Island Reds. They TOTALLY had arching pointy tails at 9 weeks old. But they did have pink and little to no comb or waddle development. I am glad I kept them until at about 3 or 4 months when their pointy tale feathers fell out and they came in round tipped.

I just got 7 chicks (all females) from a reputable hatchery. They are now all 1 month old. They all have developed pink comb and they all bites. Are they males? They does not make sense. Maybe, it is a specific breed.

I've watched several videos on this subject and yours was the best. Short, to the point, and very informative. Thank you for your help.

I have learned more about hens and roosters in the first 3 minutes of this video than I have watching hours of idiots who have chickens and think they are experts. Thank you. I mean it, thank you. As a person who is new to the whole chicken deal, this means everything.

My Leghorn developed very fast and I got her with 2 White Rocks that look very different. I thought I had a roo and 2 hens but they are all hens and my Leghorn has the biggest reddest comb. Though it has lightened up since laying. I think this is a good guide for most breeds. Thanks for sharing.

Great tutorial, I have six week old pullets they were all supposed to be hens, I'm positive I have two roosters. I would like to know before they get to 4 months old. I've raised chicken for years. But the sex really didn't matter at that time now I just want a hen house. Limited to 25. Great video showing multiple breeds. Thank you very much.🐣
