When I ride. I always put on full gear. No matter what. My dad who got me into bikes was riding along a road late at night going a bit over the limit. And there was an old Ute in front of him. In a quick flash dad saw something coming at him fast so he ducked. He was rushed to the hospital after some people found him on the side of the road after he fell off his bike. He was hit with a shovel. In his helmet. But he measured where it would have hit if he didn’t duck and he would have been decapitated. It would have hit him in the neck. If he didn’t duck and wasn’t wearing a helmet. My dad would not be here. He still rides.
This is my new favorite channel. I have not ridden in 20 years and going back soon. So this is informative and often hilarious. Keep it up Papa Yammie!
Fortunately, I still have my beginner bike. The Ninja 400 is a lot of fun. My F4i and Z900 are way faster, but the little Ninja can be rung out, keeps taking it, and the speed is still somewhat reasonable. The Z is sort of the longer distance machine, and the F4i only goes on the street to try out a new part or check a repair from the previous track day.

My worst accident was when I #2 squided, it was 9am and I was on my way to a buddies house to go help him buy a 350z. It was 95° and i figured I’m in no rush so the one time I follow the law and flow of traffic I get hit by a Volvo, low side and tumbled/rolled/slid about a football fields length. The ONLY time I was following the law on two wheels at that, wear that gear 🙏🏽

First time shot on a Lambretta 75 (pre helmet law) and someone hit me going through a red light . I lost skin on my knees, hands, face and head! Not nice. 31 years as a courier followed and despite many smashes, I never lost skin, just plenty of broken bones! Be careful out there.
I feel so attacked 🤣 love my Versys 650! I rode it this morning from work down Lost Creek over to 2222 and Bee Caves rd. I see you guys pass my Fire station on Barton Creek all the time!
I completely agree with having 2 different types of bikes. I have my ninja which I dont care what anyone or any numbers say I absolutely love the thing. And I have my duel sport enduro. The option of a different type of ride just makes motorcycling so much more enjoyable. And really fun is what it's all about. Two bikes also made it possible to finally get my wife into riding now 😎

I had my front sprocket bolt fall off multiple times; yes I torqued it all the times I fixed it, it became habit to torque it before every ride for a while; the caveat is making sure the torque spec doesn’t also specify loctite lol

Going to look at a 02 cbr954rr tomorrow that I found for under a grand that needs reviving but I couldn't sell my first bike. Learning on my 92 750 nighthawk for the past 2 and a half years has been amazing. I can't wait to rebuild it. It needs a lot of love. And yea I still even wave to the little moped dudes, they get so excited where I live it's great lmao
As a Female Motorcyclist I appreciate you and the fact you included that we deserve respect on the road as well. Could you perhaps also include in a video that if you see a female riding a bike Please stop asking us stupid questions. I have been asked more than once at a gas station “Can you ride that?” Even after they saw me ride it into the station…that’s just one question out of several…..🙄
People are idiots. At least TH-cam has let me see plenty of female riders who have more skill than I'll ever have, so I hope I can avoid being that idiot.
When you include things like "as a female" it fits the formula for attention seeking btw and everyone notices you're doing it immediately. You probably think you're being subtle and getting away with it but you never are. Hope this helps!
The point about keeping the beginner bike makes sense, but I'm still gonna sell my rebel 250. Y'all just rode one so you know just how lacking that thing is lol
Yeah screw that thing. I actually ended up buying an 80s vt500 for noobs to ride and even for myself to rip when I don’t feel like stirring up trouble on the big bike. It sees a whole lot of use, love that little donkey
@@stufoo sounds cool, but another reason I'm getting rid of it is cause the seat height is too low for me, my legs fall asleep after a half hour or so on that bike
That was a good laugh because there was so much truth in it. You just earned a sub! But my first bike was a 1973 CB350 so "light" was not in the equation, it weighed nearly as much as my new R1250GSA... I am seriously looking at a Triumph street scrambler as a 2nd knocking around bike though. Good point on doing many things. Ride your ride and have a blast!
@1:15 I was the first ever person in my town to get arrested for "Motorcycle Surfing" it was almost all the way down one of our longest streets & it did involve a large number of bends, FunFact I also got arrested for exactly the same thing celebrating my 50th & the Sargent that booked me in was the guy that arrested me 34 years earlier.
for talking down on smaller bikes, i'll generally discourage people from buying sub-40hp bikes as their first/sole motorcycle, but once the bike is theirs i will only say good things about it. basically i only talk down on prospective/theoretical small bikes. and my habit is due to living in CA where with the exception of a niche cases in LA/SD/SF, then freeway travel will be necessary and most cars drive ~80mph on our freeways while being completely blind to riders so it's a safety thing for me.
My first bike is a 1982 Suzuki gs750, completely torn down and rebuilt into a café racer over the course of 7 months, and cost nearly $4,000 to boot. I learned so much about wrenching though. From hand set bearings, to wiring harness, I've done just about everything myself.
Number 3: When I told a stranger that I got my first bike (MT-07), they actually had the gall to tell me to my face that I should have bought a $20,000 800lb Harley (HD mentioned specifically) bagger for my first bike.
Nice I ride with Harley people and I’ve rode their Harley’s, great for highway miles, but my First bike was a Honda cb500x and the second bike, Vulcan 650, the Harley guys loved to get on me about getting a “real bike”. Got myself a Africa twin and that shut them all up. I guess you just gotta spend over 10k for them to accept you
@@just_aturtle4360 way to far outta my price range, there’s a distinct difference between $12000 and $23000, besides it’s not better for me, I like the riding position of adventure bikes, I also like to just explore backroads and not have to stop when I hit dirt
# 6 is somthing that all my buddys live by, we all have our big fun bikes (mines a cb1000) but im still more proud of my dr200 cause it is just so danm fun its the same as my buddys grom is to him, and another guy in our group has a 390 duke with a R1 in the garage as well, to all riders that are wanting a big bike, do remember this rule, it is 100% something to follow.
I only use a torque wrench on sprockets and wheels, but I have been a mechanic all my life I have learned how tight I should tighten something if it is in aluminum or steel and what it is made out of. Also I agree with multiple bike, I have a 15' KLR650 that was set up for street and distance riding that I have swapped over for more dirt and trail(I changed the tires, that is all) and a 19' Z650 that I got for the street(the reason the KLR is for dirt and trail).
I tend to be guilty of Rule #4. I have an FJR1300, live in Texas, and regard a 300 mile ride as "just in the neighborhood". A long ride starts at about 3000 miles or longer than a weekend. (I am retired.)
Having more than one motorcycle is definitely fun. I only have two, but be careful when which after riding one for a long time. I almost had an oops 😬 moment because they’re different riding style.
Hahaha I can TOTALLY see that happening. I only have one bike now but in the process of clearing out the garage to make room for a second bike. This is something I am SURE will happen to me since, Hell, it happens whenever I get back into my car! I rarely drive and use my bike for nearly everything, and I’ve caught myself on more than one occasion almost ramming my car in between two stopped cars at a traffic light to filter 😅 Thank goodness I realized I wasn’t on my bike before actually attempting this but boy oh boy, imagine trying to explain that to the angry drivers you’ve hit.
Yeah I have a lightweight naked bike that you can attack corners with and I rode my heavy cruiser somehow thinking I could ride as aggressively and ended up wiping out and rethinking my life lol
I've heard number 6 so many times and I see why. I love my bike I've made so many memories on that thing I could never get rid of it. My sporty will stay with me till I die.
I´m a beginner with a duke 390 and your videos really help me a lot. Great work! Keep it up! Ahh ... and yes! Every additional orange accessory really DID give me 1hp+!!! :-)
We have 13 bikes for our family of 5. Between my wife and I we each have a vintage bike (1973 Honda and R60/5 with side car), she has a Rebel 500 and CRF230L. I round out my rides with a CB500X and Aero 1100. Your N+1 ideal is something we have come to grips with.
I have a Harley springer softail. Had it for 25 years. I have a 2004 Suzuki GSXR750. It’s 18 years old and am looking to add a KTM 690 enduro r to my collection at the moment so I can enjoy some light trails. (I’m getting old 😝) I’ve always felt that it’s not what you ride but if you ride. Met a lot of good people while riding over the years. One of the best things about the hobby
Looking at a 400 this week and even if I "grow" out of it I don't plan on selling it. IL just make it a fun little part of a beginning stable. Can't I cannot freaking wait.
I bought/fixed an ninja 250 to teach friends on and now there are 4 new bikers on the block. Worth every penny in parts and the few days to get it going.
Outch that hurt alittle my klr dont have a working tach that spedocable is on the way need to do oil chage before this year... slowly painting it also was black plastydiped hole bike it looked grose but 500 buck for a klr250 with no oil plug was worth the shot in the dark i took. Ive been thinking i need to get new tires rim lock and all that then i herd that part idk hahhaha
I really enjoy your videos, wide variety content, entertaining, insightful and funny. Maybe referring to turbo-busa less frequently would be good. Or maybe I am wrong. Keep it up the great work
Even two bikes that do the same thing is great. If you're only a street cruiser, it helps having a second street cruiser for those times when your bike is broken down for some reason amd now it has to sit for a week+ while you wait on parts to come in the mail.
Totally agree that you should have at least two different types of bikes in your stable. I have a 2000 Ducati 900SSie as my go to fun ride for carving up (loose technical term borrowed from youtube, I'm 67) twistees and a 1993 BMW R1100RS for those days I want to do 300km+ for coffee. And carve up some twistees cause we don't have straight roads in NZ South Island. I mean one is German, the other Italian. Two completely different types.
"The Hot Potato of Death" I hope you don't mind but I'm going to call one of my builds that, I name all my bikes & that is just a cool name waiting to be used, I'm currently riding "Agent Orange" it might not kill you today, but you can guarantee that it will kill you one day.
I still have my beginner bike(cmx500) along side my speed twin and still have fun in it, not to mention it helps in the high fuel prices with all the wars going on. Cmx500 is my first bike. I aint gonna get rid of it.
Here in the uk I am on a 2020 ktm duke 125cc and I have had 1000cc bikes pull up next to me and all of them have welcome to the life and give some helpful information and what are good roads to ride on even for a 125cc.
My "beginner bike" aka my first bike is a cbr 600 rr from 03 like me and the only riders i sometimes nag on are 125cc riders that say yeah 125cc is more than enough because youre not allowed faster anyway. Like yeah but getting to 120kmh in 15 seconds vs in like 6 is a big difference with a lot of fun in between
I just bought my first bike (Honda PCX) after a year of YN because it is what I wanted to just cruise downtown/uptown/winding scenic drives. I am ready for the gatekeeping from my coworkers. They may not have ridden since "before the kids" a decade back, but scooter riders must be mocked... USA USA!
My response to these "that's not a real bike" types is to ask whether they've ridden their "real bike" from Utrecht to the North Cape and back, because that is exactly what I did on my X-Adv. I've been to Porto (Portugal), Pilsen (Czech), Gibraltar and San Marino and I kind of want to ride to Greece and the Isle of Man. I don't care what they say, I know my adventure scooter looks kind of funny. Especially with the Givi rack on the back and the custom fairing that hides 2 10 litre auxiliary fuel tanks. Luckily the regular guys in the group that I go on group rides with have gotten the message that it's just childish to mock a guy's bike. Heck quite a few of them will message me before rides asking if I can carry their backpacks as their street fighters and super sports have bugger all carrying capacity. I don't mind, I'm so used to riding with that big ol' topcase and those panniers. But it's always funny to see new-to-the-group "real bike" riders being told off by the S1000RR Power Rangers for mocking my scooter.
Couldn't agree more, 2 bikes that do completely different things is ideal. A 750 ADV and 125 scooter (with 41k miles and scratches with an impeccable engine) is heaven
Yeah I went with the gnt method on my front sprocket once… ended up buying a new sprocket and hardware because I couldn’t be bothered to go get my toque wrench 🤦🏻♂️
I keep looking at my '11 R1200GS and thinking how nice a new one would be... but is it worth a loan payment? No, not really. Also, you're totally right about not selling the beginner bike. Not only would nobody want to buy my '96 KLR, but it's such a utilitarian bike that's just "Good Enough" at everything I do. Never mind how little I would get for it LOL!
#2 Gear for Summer, get one of those "Vented Shirts" with the Amour attached they are really inexpensive & some a bit shit, but there are some good ones out there, but anything is better than nothing if it saves you once, it's once more than nothing is going to save you, road rash is not a good look on sexy legs or tattooed arms.
Been riding 12 years, mostly dirt but at least a few thousand miles on pavement a year. When it comes to squidding, its really not that bad. Its harder than you expect to die from road rash, and thats all that leathers really protect you from. I can't stress enough how important good boots and a helmet are though. A bike will break your ankle if you tip over standing still, and your face can hit the curb going 10mph. I have walked off plenty of road rash, but also wrecked plenty of helmets. Jeans, basically any jacket, boots, and a helmet, and you really wont ever regret an easy cruise. Heck, all said id even skip the helmet before riding in sneakers. Literally once broke an ankle moving a bike inside the garage.
@@ntdscherer not trying to act like thats the only thing to worry about. Its just that in my city i see so many guys riding around with riding jackets, pants, and a pair of sneakers. A broken ankle will ruin your next month while a big scrape on your shoulder just messes up your afternoon. First thing every bike shop always tries to sell you though is a jacket. Gloves, boots; the things that protect the body parts that actually matter on a daily basis though are little afterthoughts everyone seems to forget though. Worst offender is leather vests. I challenge anyone in the world to find a way to hurt their chest or back on a bike more than literally any other body part in a real fall.
I am sure a real biker would not agree but I just bought a 07 heritage softail and it shares the garage with a klr! Now I just need a something sport oriented for the perfect trio
Ouch. After forty years of riding I started wearing an airbag under my jacket(s). I’ve had enough minor crashes that even just-around-the-corner is a known risk.

Oh it is. I was literally being told a few minutes ago that I didn't know a damn about motorcycles because I called a Ninja 400 a sports bikes. The argument basically went like this "blah blah blah, doesn't have clip on, blah blah blah". I just told the guy that I just consider anything with fairings to be a sports bike, and I just consider liter bikes to be supersports. I don't even own a Ninja 400/650, but it sounded like the guy just wanted to talk down on anyone that's riding more street practical machine then what they are riding.
@@ev304 he sounded like a sports bike squid to me. Probably rides a 600 or liter bike and just needs to feel superior, even though a good rider on a Ninja 400 can probably kick his butt on the track.

I Like proper torque figures... they save a ton of time repairing threads & getting things undone again... plus if you have a crush washer on the Sump plug, replace it every time... Don't know if you realise, but Toyota have cardboard washers, that can't handle more than 30Nm, 25Nm is fine, go that little bit too tight and they split and leak, so will rubber seals, paper gaskets and anything plastic or Aluminium! a 1/4" drive torque wrench is your best friend next to the 3/8 torque wrench, but you still can't do without a 200Nm 1/2 inch one, and I have a 340Nm 1/2 inch one too. the SP Tools ones are My favourites. especially as they don't have foot/pounds on them (and they are Orange... I like Orange, I even have 3 Orange Cats, an Orange High vis Jacket for riding, and I was going to have an orange bike but they sold out, so I got a Black one instead! (they come in Suzuki's famous Yellow, a dark Orange, and Black) I also like turtles... and by turtles I mean titties!

Going to look at a 02 cbr954rr tomorrow that I found for under a grand that needs reviving but I couldn't sell my first bike.
My dental hygienist, Debbie, rides :-)
People are idiots. At least TH-cam has let me see plenty of female riders who have more skill than I'll ever have, so I hope I can avoid being that idiot.
It's good that he said it, but also sad that he had to say it :)
Well? Can you?

I regret selling the beginner bike 12 years ago. Full throttle on the 250 was a blast.
I love how there's at least 3 Spike burns built in to this.
Can confirm keeping your learning bike. Part-exchanged my CBR300 for a CBR650 2years ago, I miss the 300 would love to be able to take it out again
My realization of mortality on 2 wheels was hitting a wild bore at 55. thank god for full leather.

Like yeah but getting to 120kmh in 15 seconds vs in like 6 is a big difference with a lot of fun in between
could not agree more on the gatekeeping thing. I did not realise the extent of it until my wife and girl mates started riding.

USA USA!
Enjoy!

2 VRod Muscle
3 Triumph Tiger
4 Honda Grom
5 1930-50 Harley or Indian eye candy bike
If all you care about is not dying definitely just get a helmet. It's really hard to die from a broken ankle too.
@@ntdscherer not trying to act like thats the only thing to worry about. Its just that in my city i see so many guys riding around with riding jackets, pants, and a pair of sneakers.
