  • Today we are discussing a Day in the Life of a Nephrology Nurse Practitioner. I have a special guest Dr. Yolanda Thompson-Martin. She is an Adult Family Nurse Practitioner. She has been in the field of Nephrology for more than 22 years. She has served as sub-investigator on a number of clinical trials. She is a published author and member of the American Nephrology Nurses Association. She has a wealth of knowledge and experience and has a heart of gold!

    Lady nephrology, I am amazed at the hope you both give us. Not only woman and people of color, but people in general. It is time for social media to become a platform for excellence, tenacity, and knowledge. Continue to popularize the pursuit of education. Thank you for this.
    I’m new to your channel. I’m a nurse with 9 years of experience. I am currently considering nephrology or oncology. I hope to find a video where you share your journey from the beginning.

    This is 👏. Thank you for sharing. Did Dr Yolanda have to specialize in nephrology after completion of the AFNP program?Did she work in dialysis/nephrology prior to becoming an NP?Also,which state are y'all located? I am in Massachusetts. I am in FNP school and trying to figure out if I should stay in dialysis or focus on internal medicine/family practice in order to figure out my future as an NP. any advice will be highly appreciated.

    • @LadyNephrology
      @LadyNephrology  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello no she did not have to specialize in Nephrology after her FNP. She already worked in dialysis as an RN prior to becoming an NP. She’s in Missouri.

    Hello 👋 I enjoyed the video!! I’m soo interested in knowing the best route I should also take in becoming a nephrology NP. Do you have any recommendations or information that would be helpful?

    • @LadyNephrology
      @LadyNephrology  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, are you a RN or NP now? Yolanda and I both worked in dialysis as RNs before we became NPs. So we already had Nephrology experience. But some people just go straight into becoming Nephrology NP without previous experience. I’ve learned with Nephrology either you hate it or love it.

    • @shonquilalaprade1674
      @shonquilalaprade1674 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m a RN now. I have my MSN in population health with a concentration in nursing education. My population of interest was patients with CKD. I would like to go back to get my NP and i didn’t know if i should do acute, gerontology or family track to better fit that role. I also didn’t know if i should work in the dialysis setting first. I have worked on renal floors and I do love that population. However, just wanted to know what was your personal opinion. Thank You 😊

    • @LadyNephrology
      @LadyNephrology  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@shonquilalaprade1674 it depends. I got my FNP, Yolanda is Adult NP. We graduated over 10 years ago. Now a lot of places want you to have Acute care NP especially if you work in hospital. You have many different options. Blessings to you on your journey
