For many of us winter is when our mountains come into their own. Dazzling white snow under blue skies, crisp underfoot with views stretching to forever with crystal clarity; the scrape and bite of crampons on ice, the thunk as a well-swung ice-axe embeds itself securely in perfect snow-ice. Even the white-out, the numbing wind and the face-shredding blizzard are part of the sensory treat that is a Scottish mountain winter. And we love it all.
But we have to be honest: many of Scotland’s mountains are serious undertakings, particularly so in winter conditions, and will require skills and equipment beyond those needed for normal summer hill walking.
Before starting on winter mountaineering you should first make sure your navigation and hillcraft skills are up to scratch under summer conditions and then look to develop those skills so that you are ready for the added challenges of winter. Mountaineering Scotland runs specific winter navigation courses, winter skills and avalanche awareness courses to help you gain or improve skills.

You guys made that hike look easy. I've done it twice, both in summer with good conditions and it was quite the full day both times. Hiking through that snow is impressive. Making it to that ridge through the snow coming out of the lost valley looked a little scary. Great video!!

Excellent wee video - must be longer than I thought since I was up the lost valley- no ladders and wire cables back then. That slope onto the ridge catches some folk out when snow covered.
Hi Graham, Yes we actually seen someone fall all the way down and one other turned back to walk all the way back down the way he’d came instead of going down it!
@@ontheadventuretrails-scotl9389 Yep seen folks take the quick way down as well. Luckily they were ok despite one tumbling quite a bit. Too many go out without winter kit late in the season IMHO

best feeling getting up on that ridge climbing in the snow, i done the buachaille in the snow , that was a tough one but amazing

I did the Lost Valley and BnB in the early 70s. No bridges or steps then.
