you know, i used to work for a new york rock and metal label for two years, i studied music management, so at one point, the way that kpop distributed their albums and still selling 100k+ copies of physical albums was super interesting to me. so that's where i dove deeper into it and discovered not only bts but sold my heart to MONSTA X. bc their style is so unique and the way they excel st everything they do, without getting the recognition they deserve for it, is INSANE. they are from an indie label which doesn't have the ressources or the knowledge to promote monsta x worldwide - but if they did, and everyone who's ever listened to monsta x and their unique sound would agree with this, they would top the worldwide charts BY FAR. they deserve so much more. their talent and sound is IMPECCABLE and never been done before
You know their talent is underrated when the management of bigger groups nicks MX choreos for their groups because they know it will sell well... (happened to MX in 2016 already if I recall correctly)

BTS & Monsta X are very representative groups of kpop, but they have total different styles, being Monsta X more aggressive and somewhat sexier in some ways than BTS, and BTS being more Fresh/Flower boy and their sexiness can be appreciated differently, less straight forward. In terms of Music, well, they are both very diverse, but Monsta X has a distinctive heavy sound in general, while BTS is more "poppish" as you said.

Other than the mistake of the member mix-ups, you should definitely react to more Monsta X music! They are very versatile in song genre, and a lot of the members participate in their music and choreo. Fun fact: one of the rappers (the member in the beginning of the video, and who also did the high note after the dance break; his name is Joohoney) is the one who produced this title track for the mini-album.

About the BTS mixup, that’s fine don’t worry, kpop can be VERY confusing to someone who has nothing to do with it. Once you get in deeper you will understand that the term kpop is more like a term to describe the industry that music companies in Korea ‚produce‘. There are SO many different kpop groups with different concepts out there, you will never know them all or watch all their music. For the genre itself, kpop groups do whatever genre they like. There‘s a girlgroup who do songs that are close to goth rock music. Their name is Dreamcatcher by the way.
BTS is just the most famous kpop Group and most members of different groups know each other, some are even friends, they see each other on music shows and award stages and share waiting rooms and stuff.
Monsta X are pretty unique though. We started to refuse to call them a boygroup. They’re a men group. All of them were born between 1992-1996 so they’re adults and they don‘t hesitate to do their thing. They often have some sort of storyline in their music videos and this song actually was written, composed and arranged by their main rapper Joohoney (the vesper martini guy).
It‘s hard to explain much about them, they seem very bad boy-ish, energetic and maybe even scary but honestly if you know them better behind the scenes all of them are humble, nice, caring and sweet. They care a lot for each other and their fans and they never take anything for granted.
You need to see Love Killa and Hero by them I think.

@@-amel-9896 it’s just a term the fandom uses not an actual term. We say that because they don’t have the usual boygroup style and are more mature not necessarily because they’re adults, we just don’t really like to address them as ‘boys’
@@doriegom8250 i wouldn't call their style more "mature" but it's just more "harsh" and intensive. There's many kpop groups like that these days, especially among boygroups. They just don't have the happy bubbly kpop style, but this style is starting to be less prominent among boygroups. these days, with the exceptions of maybe bts, txt, seventeen astro and a few others, boygroups all do the hard hitting dark "noisy" type of style which monsta x embody a lot. Calling them a "men group" because they don't have light concepts is kind of weird because it's basically calling the groups with light happy concept childish. Being happy and fun has no age. girlgroups have always done that kind of concept, and we don't call the groups who don't do it "women group". I know yall didn't mean it like that but it looks like it has mysoginistic undertones.

Of course Monsta x is still unique, you know why? Because groups started using monsta x as an example of a concept to get listeners' attention!! Jyp has done a lot of that, using monsta x video to show a group of them how to get "inspired". The one who produce this is the guy at the start saying “if you don’t know, now you know”. He is Jooheon. He is a rapper with big interest in MJ. Which is why you can detect that MJ vibe in the song. Hey honestly yeah there was a mix up on members but I'm so happy you accidently ended up on Monsta X. They are vastly different from BTS and gives you a good taste of what else kpop offers.
Monsta X tends to have heavier bass and a more intense sound than BTS which lately has been more of a light dance genre.

Oh I understand why you might have mixed up the members because Suga and Kihyun are good friends+knew each other since pre-debut! I'm glad it led to you falling down the Monsta X rabbit hole because they're truly a versatile and unique group. They're in control of a lot of creative aspects regarding their image+concept and their influence is seen in a lot of 4th gen boy groups! Whether it be Korean, Japanese, or English, they excel in all 3 languages and you'll never get bored. Their b-sides are some of the most diverse I've ever heard in a kpop group so you'll definitely find something for every genre!
If u wanna listen to them more, MonstaX have a full english album called All About Luv ft french montana, william, and pitbull. Also they have a collab with Steve Aoki called Play it cool. These boys are also under Epic Records for western promotions. If u want to check out their eng songs, Play It Cool ft Steve Aoki and Who Do U Love ft French Montana would be the best options (but fyi, their eng songs are mostly 80s 90s vibes and slower rnb songs than korean ones.)

I'm Army since 2016 (BTS's fandom name) and I'm a Monbebe (Monsta X's fandom name) since 2015. Both of them really another level with another styles. Monsta X's vocalists and rappers are no joke.
I was confused by the beginning of the video re: BTS members in Monsta X?! But I realize this is the beginning of your journey. Monsta X sound is unique & slaps hard. They are beast idols-Men. They’re popular with westerners. They deserve so much more recognition but they’re from a smaller agency. They’re growth is 100% organic by talent. I hope you check out more of MX cuz they have great songs like Shoot Out , Alligator and English songs are super impressive Play It Cool, from their all ENGLISH album CHARTED #5 on BB:Middle of the Night and Who Do You Love

I hope you can find out a lot more about monstax and other kpop groups alongside bts but i also know that it is a LOT. And i mean really a LOT. I got aquaintanced with bts as my first kpop group in 2019 and I feel like i still only know SO little about the most well known and popular kpop groups 🙈😅 So yeah, don't feel any pressure and continue watching what you love best of what you discover of kpop! Some other groups I enjoy would be Exo, Stray kids, Cix, Nct, Mamamoo, Shinee, Ateez, Day6 and N.flying so it be cool if you could maybe try out some of their stuff at some point! That article you found is basically talking about the longtime friendship between Suga (from BTS) and Kihyun (from Monsta X). They've been friends before either of them had debuted in their respective groups.

thanks so much for checking them out!! monsta x are seriously such an amazing and flexible group, their titles are normally edgy, mature and sexy and just overall beasts while their b sides have something for everything! they’re the one group that i absolutely fall in love with every track in the album.
imo the duo rapline Joohoney (the one who starts the song “if you don’t know now you know) and I.M (the “don’t you wanna feel alive) are some of the most top tier rapline in the industry. their energy off of each other is just so good!! and the vocal lines between the rest of the members are so strong and unique!
Also in regards to the MV: the members are finding ways to get into this secret auction to steal what looks to be a powerful / expensive jewel. Jooheon impersonates the auctioneer to direct the pace while the rest of the members buy time on the table until the blackout device goes out. that’s when they make their move and slip away either as undercover or pretending to be SWAT ~

Appreciate BTS as the gateway group to KPOP and you are right KPOP has so much more to offer than what you have heard from them so far. Monsta X is an example---their sound is diverse across their Korean and English albums to be characterized as just one genre. There are so many other awesome groups that KPOP, or rather K-Music has to offer and what you have seen and heard is just a tip of the iceberg.

I hope you will react more to MonstaX, I recommend you Love Killa, Shoot out, Dramarama and Follow. You will notice that they have a "bad boy" vibe and more "into your face" kind of music, but they have an entire English album too (some songs of the album that have an mv: who do you love, middle of the night, you can't hold my heart) that have a different vibe and other songs too in korean more chill (some: Find u, all in) and not agressive.
They are really versatile even though they are well known for their more aggressive style.
I appreciate so much what you said about makeup and style, it is something that usually in western countries is unusual for men. I find it fascinating too, and above all style and makeup are not one gender property.
I follow a lot of kpop groups and all of them make more than one album a year, Monsta sometimes make 3 albums a year too! It is difficult for me but I can't imagine how hard it is for them to keep up, I appreciate a lot that they make music for us so often but I know that that is really hard and stressing for them. A lot of groups (Monsta too) make japanese comebacks too and promote overseas, more work for them. In addition they have to promote their songs for weeks and even make different shows, lives... in order to stay close to their fans. They can't date (publicly), they have to keep their image...they are really stressed.

Monsta X is a group that known for their masculinity. But, at the same time their songs basically screams Monsta X tho. No matter how many songs they released each of them have this distinct sound that shows "this is monsta X song" no matter what genre they are. Songs like Dramarama and Shoot Out are the type of songs that promotes them as the "monster group" with this bad boy vibes while songs like Jealousy, Love Killa and Gambler itself are leaning towards the concept of being dangerous sexy guys, them being a men group instead of boy group lol 😂

But they also open to try other concept such as women crush which is more feminine and matured for example, their latest song Unnatural and debut song of their 2nd sub-unit which is Easy by Wjsn The Black.

But they are divided in subunits. A couple of months ago they had a comeback with ALL the members. The song is called "Resonance". They are one of the most coordinated groups in dancing of all the industry (in my opinion). Imagine coordinating 23 guys!

I like to watch people's experience with K-pop from the start, so I think it's important to see how somebody like you (or me when I first came upon kpop) breaks down the misconceptions and assumptions that we have going into another country's music industry like this. I think it's somewhat of a happy accident that you ended up checking out Monsta X as they are a completely different style and sound to BTS, especially the brighter songs BTS have been promoting recently.
I am glad you weren't turned off or pushed away entirely by the difference in beauty standards and the initial frustration of fans who didn't understand that this was you trying to process something completely new and different. When you say that genre mashups are one of your favorite things, I fist pumped the air because that is what is most interesting about k-pop to me is just the insane variety in instruments, languages, rhythm patterns, singing styles, and production techniques mixed together in so many cool ways.
I will try to watch your reactions in order to see how your relationship with K-pop progresses, and I just wanted to say thank you for pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone because K-Pop is a BOTTOMLESS well of incredibly talented attractive people making super interesting music, and it has changed my life.

Monsta X wear leather pants more often than not 😂 You def. should check out more of their discography (I recommend Alligator, Follow, Stuck, Shoot Out, Hero and any other of their videos) and most definitely some of their dance practices (def. Alligator, the dance practice for the SBS performance of All In, Jealousy, Shoot Out costume version, Stuck and Beastmode, Dramarama) and then have a run with it and become a new Monbebe, too 😅. Fantasia is as the name implies a fantasy composition, including different styles, too. And they often use external sounds like a roar, car engine sounds, guns reloading, ad libs etc. like Depeche Mode did in the early days, very much EDM/industrial EDM heavy.
The time travel storyline connects different videos, Find You, Destroyer and Dramarama.
Sambakja live is extremely good if you want to get a feel for what is maybe or rather definitely (!) the best rap duo in K-Pop atm (Jooheon and I.M.). Also, Hyungwon has been DJing at concerts as DJ H.One, check out the live We Are Here Seoul 2019.

Monsta X is my first venture into K-Pop and I have been a complete Monbebe since.
Gambler is also the first title song that was written by the main rapper Jooheon.
In K-Pop, men are wearing makeup, multiple earrings, coloured lenses and bright hair colours as normal attire. It is artsy and in contrast to the traditional Korean concept of manliness/gender in society. Two of the singers in MX (and probably in many other K-Pop bands) were actually chosen and are still often labeled as "visuals" in addition to vocalists because they are so "beautiful"/ethereal/what Westerners would label as "feminine"/effeminate.
When you look at the main target age group (pree-teens and teens) for K-Pop fandoms and with many trainees debuting as early as 13, it makes sense that men are not really "manly men" but softer versions and less threatening in their manliness aka more approachable and fantasy-friendly.
Also, MX are openly supportive of LGBTQIA and manliness and gender for them is a fluid concept. 🏳🌈

I am really happy that you reacted to Monsta x, they are a fantastic group that truely needs to be listened to more. They are so good and really deserve more attention. I kinda laughed a bit when you said the Suga was in group too, but kpop is another world to be in and you learn as you go. Kihyun ,Suga and Jooheon are good friends and Hyungwon and Jhope are friends from their school days so there are friendships between the 2 groups. Also Monsta x debuted as 7, but due to false accusation Wonho stepped down from group so as not to drag his brothers down, Even after it was proven that he was innocent he still couldnt rejoin his brothers because toxic fans still throwing hate at him which might affect the group. He did come back as a soloist and is still under the Starship company umbrella in Highline which is a sub . You should also check his music . He has had two comeback since he returned with 2 album . Check out Losing You, Open Mind, Lose. Ain't About You , Weneed and so many more off both of his albums. He also did a beautiful cover of I Love You by Billie Ellish. You need to see more monsta x for sure. Let me give you an extra info about them, there was a member named " wonho" you'll see him in some videos specially old ones but you wont see him in new ones because he left the group. He is a soloist now if you wanna check him too. This was just a short info to make it a little bit easy for you, kpop could be soo confusing.

I am SO happy you have entered the world of Monsta X, even if it was by accident haha. But you know what, everything happens for a reason! I echo what others have said here, KPop as a genre is so versatile, any genre you can think of there'll be a KPop song somewhere that will incorporate it in to theirs. Even individual groups go through a variety of concepts and evolution in their music. So you'll never get bored! BTS's earlier music is vastly different to what they're doing nowadays. Monsta X are known for being an edgy more grittier group. I'd love to see more Monsta X and KPop reactions in general 😊

Good sir, Monsta X is a species of their own. This song in itself is on another level when it comes to Monsta X and a completely diffrent plain in Kpop.
On that note, to fully satisfy your kpop experience I would like to suggest something of a different kpop level in itself🙃😉 I strongly encourage you to bless your ears with an iconic cover of Hoppipolla singing "Creep" by Radiohead. We all know that many have covered this classic yet I feel many havent been able to take the song and give it new life.. Until Hoppipolla. You do know that to sing a cover you have to do as well if not better than the original. So what can 4 South Koreans do to truly make it special? 🤔 This may be one of the best (if not THE best) covers I have EVER heard. (Korn, The Cure, Prince, and my former favorite, The Pretenders)
Or, perhaps you would like to truly feel the power that music posesses and listen to "Your Ocean" by Hoppipolla. This song proves how music is its own universal language that we all speak and understand. That regardless of what kind of music you listen to, there is only one genre of music, "good music"

The MV is based on Ocean's Eleven apparently and the members were also inspired by James Bond. Joohoney's favorite artist is Michael Jackson so we can also see MJ vibes throughout the video and the song. It was a nice reaction and if you like Gambler you should listen to Love Killa, Dramarama, Jealousy, Shoot Out, but all Monsta X songs are bops
You might like TXT's 0x1=lovesong. It has a rock influence and the song is about dealing through rough times with someone you love. They're also BTS little brother group under the same company
