      And a side comment, what if a strong grip creates clubhead speed… I mean it’s a very natural athletic way of holding any sport equipment

    The strong grip, or at least a substantially stronger grip than I’m used to, gets me by far the best ball striking results. But the other side of the coin is that a poor swing can often yield awful results that are much more damaging than I get with a neutral grip. So I’m working on internalizing the strong grip because I’m convinced it allows my arms and wrists and club shaft to travel on a better path.

    I use a baseball grip and grip it and rip it on driver and long irons and change to a weaker grip and slow backswing from 7 to wedges and chips. Works perfectly!

    My coach changed my grip to have the left heel pad on top of the club and left thumb to the right of shaft. Right hand covers left thumb with the lifeline and right thumb is towards the left of the club. This feels “strong” to me (inwas very neutral) but this is a very good teacher to i stick with it. Sometimes I hooknleft but I’m more likely to have an open face. The coach said my original grip was causing me issues in the back swing ?

    A strong grip started at well for me then after a few months turned every shot into a hook. Back to neutral for me.

    Great dedication going out in the white stuff. Probably the only time you have had to shovel off your practice mat.

    Insane how you have literally just characterised my golf game with these 3 points. Im a 5 handicap player with a really strong grip. I baffle myself in being able to hit a drive 300 yrs and then top it off the next tee. I early extend but no pro has ever related it to my grip! Obviously im not naive enough to think this is the dominant or only problem but interesting none the less.

    Shawn Clement has a very strong lateral move towards the target so that opens the club face. He matches it to his very strong grip. Note the comment about high clubbed speed which Shawn Savage and Mo have lots of. This video is talking about other issues. How many playing partners do you have with a massively strong right hand grip who slice their driver and mid to low irons? So they aim further left and make it worse, so their grip gets stronger. Match ups people. Lee Trevino weakens his grip to hit a draw. Seve did the same thing.

      True. I was just saying above that the strong grip is dependent on your club face at the top of the swing. I can play a weak grip and still get the face pointing straight up or behind me at the top.

    I watched this video since I was always using an overly strong grip. I played 2 days later, forcing myself to use a weaker grip. Shot my best round ever. The front 9 was bad while I adjusted but I shot even par on the back 9!

    By a strong grip. , do you mean tight grip or the location of the thumb on the right hand

    I'd say a strong grip is far superior to any sort of weak grip though so it's not all bad.

    I think it's misleading to most people to hear someone say "weaken your grip" they think that means make your grip weak. I'd say slightly turn your grip in the weaker direction, and see what it does. In my case, it straightened me out a little bit with the longer clubs. I still got alot of other things to iron out, but hey, take the small wins in this game.

    This doesn’t happen to be I have an insanely shut face at the top but by the time it gets to impact my face is ridiculously open.

    With a neutral grip you have to bow to stop yourself blocking shots. why wouldn't go just utilize a stronger grip so you don't have to focus on bowing your wrist as much?

    • @1snaj
      @1snaj ปีที่แล้ว

      Used a strong grip for years and always had to aim right of the target and play draw hook even with wedges.. now I use neutral grip bow wrist and rotate body)and bomb the fade and I can’t even hit it left anymore.

    disagree

  • @barking_mad6649
    @barking_mad6649 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting that with a fairly weak grip, I still have a closed clubface due to keeping the face very much pointed down to the ground at first parallel. In fact I swing it back like a cricket bat and this helps me keep the face square. Considering going back to a strong grip and more toe up face at first parallel. 😂
    So grip + clubface can make huge difference.

    Quite a long video for a basic topic but a condensed version may be interesting. I’m not sure about a ‘bunch’ of ball speed or a ‘bunch’ of club head speed. Do you mean a ‘lot’?

    Bro... I've been watching you for a long time. I don't like your opinion on this. Everyone has different body arm length to height. For example my arm length is longer than my body. So strong right and left hand grip was a miracle change for me.

    • @jchowngolf
      @jchowngolf  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You can always make a strong grip work. Some of the best prove that. But from the thousands of lessons I’ve given, I can assure you that it is an extremely difficult grip to play to a good standard with for the vast majority of golfers. Regardless of arm length or height, almost all will suffer with the issues stated in the video
