Welcome to The Dark Side

  • The Dark Side. It's way cooler than the other way and, surprisingly, way more all-terrain(ish).
What am I talking about? Putting a car tire on a motorcycle!
Now, before you run out and try this for yourself ... do some research. Figure out if it's right for you. Just because it's something I want to do, have done, and will do, doesn't mean you should run right on and pop a car tire on your motorcycle. There's a lot of factors you have to take in account. Riding style, ability, new dynamics of the bike, new handling. It's a lot.
So, do us all a favor and do some research before you follow along. But, if you do ...
    WELCOME TO THE DARK SIDE!

Definitely considering dark side due to the fact of going through 2 to 3 tires a season, until I can find a motorcycle tire capable of at least 5000 miles. 240/40r18 have tried three different brands in three years.( even Michelin Commander II, 3500miles)

Hey bro I ride dark on my Honda nc700x adventure bike. It's the best. At first. It feels weird. Ride it for a few hundred miles and it becomes riding just like a regular motorcycle tire. Even better because you have more traction. I go off roading and it's incredible.

I put a 185/55r16 on the back of my 04 1700 road star and it holds the road in all weather. The motorcycle tire companies don't want you to do it because it will take from there sales.but the truth of the matter is that I buy a back tire for $ 75. Vs. $185. And the car tire last longer. I like saving monies, how bout you? God bless and stay up...

Yo, go dark definitely, in Philippines on road trip with a dozen bike I was only one darkside a approaching mountain range sky in front was purple black and all I could think about was this bridge under construction we had to get through. End result- putted through the construction snot like a Sherman tank while MC tire bikes were using their legs like outriggers on bunks boat. And total agreement on braking power, slam down on rear in emergency situations and wow, stop NOW

I tried an Electra glide with a Car tire on it. Personally I would not do it. The bike felt like it would never stay straight. It felt like it was doddling back and forth just slightly all the time. I did notice that it wasn't effected by the tar snakes and such, but those don't really concern me much anyway. I tend to run shinko motorcycle tires instead. They are super cheap and made in the USA. The thing that concerns me about dark side is that I push my bike to the limits in the corners, and I've felt the ragged edge when I'm on the limit of traction at full lean angle, I know that a motorcycle tire is designed to have softer rubber on the sides where the contact patch is when cornering, and harder rubber up in the center where the majority of the riding is done. A car tire has good contact when. The bike is perfectly upright but as soon as you lean even slightly then your up on the corner of the tire where there is very little tread and an even narrower contact patch then a motorcycle tire. Not to mention car tires are much harder rubber than most Motorcycle tires are simply because the weight rating is much higher. I would just hate for someone to find out that the traction breaks in expectedly in an emergency and a life is lost or the life's of a few brother's just to save a few bucks on tires. Just my $0.02 on the dark side topic :)

Disciple Pullover Good point about there NOT being as much tread on the corners of car tires. As James says in the description, DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!!!!! This may not be for everyone! Be safe everyone and God bless! 🏍

Some bikes really do not like darksiding. But it is really a matter of matching the tire to the bike to your riding style, and then finding the sweet spot for inflation pressure. I have a BMW K1600GT with double the cornering clearance your bike has, and I've never had the Bridgestone 205/50-17 RE92A slip - and I ride hard in the mountains around Salt Lake City. If you watch my video, a properly chosen car tire has the same rubber on the ground as a motorcycle tire. It's not for everyone, but for those of us where it works, it's fabulous! th-cam.com/video/hz7lDThb9uY/w-d-xo.html - jaysbigadventure
