Ukraine should be proud trying to treat POWs according to conventions.
It has got to be difficult considering why those prisoners are there, and while observing what condition the Ukrainians that come back in exchange are in.
Anyway, I'm sure that sticking to the conventions greatly increase the willingness of western countries to keep supporting Ukraine, the politicians don't get blamed for supporting wrong doing, that matters a lot in a democracy.
Same regarding the efforts that Ukraine do to keep track of donated equipment.

I'd prefer it if Ukraine didn't publish videos where the prisoners are identifiable. Better if the shots did not show the prisoners' faces.
An official at human rights watch said: “Although it may seem in some videos that POWs are free to speak as they wish, they are held captive by another military force, and it’s almost impossible to judge from one video the conditions they face.”
But an war crimes expert quoted in the Washington Post, said that, even where such interviews were not permissible: "the videos don’t constitute war crimes but are instead technical violations. And she said it’s important not to compare them to graver violations."
We know from UN officials that violations of the Geneva Convention by the Kremlin do constitute war crimes, and are far, far more serious.

Because that's the difference between a country who aspires to be a liberal democracy who respects humanitarian laws and an authoritarian dictatorship that doesn't. It's important to show these Russian PoW's that, as they'll remember how well they were treated when they go back home to their dictatorship.

"War prisoners have a chance to call their loved ones 2-3 times in a month" - great family love they have indeed. Their "loved ones" sent them happily to kill innocent people for money and are utterly disappointed to hear that they survived and are now in prison, because they cannot get the big money now.

  • @CobraF1

To be honest, if I were a Russian soldier, I'd prefer to be a POW in Ukraine than to fight in the Russian army. At least these POWs are safe, have food and medical attention. Meanwhile, on the front they are basically treated like cannon fodder by their army and officers. Plus, they are fighting a war that they have difficulty in justifying morally so their morale is terrible. I'm surprised that most of them want to be swapped in a prisoner exchange to go back to Russia. I guess they miss their families... But still, I think it's WAY safer for them to just stay as POWs till the end of the war.

who knows, but I read in the beginning of the war. That ICRC was to be present in PoWs prisons, and most of the videos Ive seen of exchanges there have been people with Red Cross markings present. Anyway thinking logicaly, it would be stupid by Ukraine to say they follow the Geneva Convention and not have ICRC involved into the prisons, they gladly is showing here. And you can see this in the video, by only showing quite restricted parts of the prison, very few close ups and just one PoW interviewed showing his face, and the other was allowed to conceal his face. Seems legit.
