"The poddle river is just another river in Dublin"... not quite, it is actually where the city got its name from, the Vikings sailed up the liffey and took a left onto the poddle river and moored their ships on a dark/black pool area on the poddle. DUBlinn, comes from dubh-linn in Gaelic meaning black pool or dark pool.
The wooden fence of the viking settlement was eventually upgraded to the stone walls of what became Dublin castle and the Poddle was diverted as a moat around the castle walls. Now it is underground but you can still visit the circle of grass in the garden the castle where the Dubh linn was, the ground being too soft to build on with this underneath.
Earlier in this episode you said the Tholshell(toll hall or city hall) by the hurdling ford. This is the other name for Dublin, currently in Gaelic "Baile Atha Cliath" literally, "Town of the hurdling ford".. the hurdling ford being a location to cross the river at low tides by means of a submersible wicker layer on the riverbed (you probably would've had to pay a toll to cross it too)

Thanks! I didn't know any of that (and Joyce surely did).
