    The Paranormal series is terrific because they dare to do the unconventional design choices that actually make a lot of sense if you bother to put your biases aside and try some different things. Next to Teles, Strats and LP or SG Specials are some of my favorite guitars. Love this! Seriously cool design and sound.

    I don’t think it’s ugly - it looks pretty cool actually. I like the transparent finish and the pickguard gives it a different look than the standard strat, plus it matches the headstock.

    TH-cam seems to have blocked this release from my view until now.. All of a sudden I found out the new paranormal series were released and now starting to find all the video's on them.. 2 months late! Awesome that you picked one of these up - I love this entire paranormal run, I want them all! There has always been some interesting stuff in these series but this year they really knocked it out the park. The stratosonic looks a little funny on its own but I think it would look great next to my les paul special tribute, almost the same exact spec sub some nobs. They even have matching maple necks. I would love to buy one of these and re-finish it to match my Gibson, but I almost want the rest of the models just as badly!

  • @markpell8979
    @markpell8979 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Colin, some afterthoughts. The tuners don't rattle playing amplified. A cool hack for the loose bridge posts, if that really bothers you, is to wrap a strip of foil tape tightly around the threads to make up for the few thousandths of play in the sockets, and you maintain the ground connection to the bridge and strings that way. Try it, it works! And shimming the neck to pitch it back and gain a little vertical adjustment for the action at the bridge is routine and what Leo Fender had in mind. I just use a strip of maple veneer for that but at the factories they'll even use a piece of matchbook cover. Or you can pay StewMac a few bucks plus shipping for a custom shim. The ears usually can't tell the difference.

    I think it might sound closer to an SG if you dropped a pair of Gibson p90's in it. It feels like they intentionally made those pickups not sound like p90's .. ie made them sound less punchy, lighter and more in the fender pickup realm. I'm looking forward to hearing what it sounds like after the upgrades. Defo not ugly to me... I think it's very cool.

    I've really been a fan of non-traditional and downright weird guitars lately. I used to be such a stickler for tradition, but having more choice of guitar flavours keeps things exciting. Strats are my favourite guitars, but I think the P90 options are very cool and I appreciate Fender addressing the knob placement for people who have a problem with it. Your mod of the bullet strat with the single P-90 and two knobs looks absolutely brilliant!

    • @EricJohnson-fh8zj
      @EricJohnson-fh8zj ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's strange you say the bit about the knobs being in the way, because I just naturally find that I always strum way up by the neck...even onto the neck lol. I can't seem do it much lower it feels unnatural.

    • @silverman169
      @silverman169 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EricJohnson-fh8zj Me too actually! For this reason the knob placement on a Strat has never bothered me, and I can for the most part adjust my strumming placement regardless of which guitar.
      I do get a bit of anxiety when I see other people play strats wondering if they'll hit the pickup switch haha.

    • @guyincognito320
      @guyincognito320 ปีที่แล้ว

      Playing with a Floyd disabused me of wild strumming. I keep to the arm tight so it's always up. Now I don't hit knobs with my right hand. You can still play with full feeling, just can't do Pete Towmshend windmill picking I guess.

    Well, some time has passed and I have had my guitar for a while now. I followed your lead and replaced the bridge with a Faber one. Not sure I can tell any tonal difference but I do feel better about it now. I also replaced the knobs with some solid aluminum ones that are knurled. They are really "grippy" and easily turned or pulled which is a huge improvement over the original knobs. I am still loving the guitar! Thanks for all the videos!

    I started watching this video just because I find your playing inspiring, Colin. But by half way through I wanted one. I tried a Squier Toronado with 24.75 scale and was excited by the 22nd fret. However it felt crowded in the upper register. I returned it for a Jazzmater.

  • @roberte03915
    @roberte03915 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I'm with you on the Strats. My biggest problem is that middle pickup. I'm always catching a pick on the corner or one of the protruding slugs. Then the sound. But in terms of quality for the money, a Fender USA is second to none. My USA Strat is an amazing instrument and I absolutely love it...just not as much as I love a Gibson.
    In my opinion, there doesn't need to be a new guitar every week, or even a shootout or anything like that. There's plenty of folks doing that. Not that I wouldn't rather watch that sort of thing here (and I will when you put them out), but I'm not out for never-ending guitar reviews - just a comfortable chat about some aspect or other of guitars is great. Keep it up!

I also have a set of Lindy Fralin P90s as the stock ones are not bad but not punchy. I do like the pickguard look but would like to eventually get a faux tortoise one. I dont like strats either, but I own the same model and its the perfect guitar platform for me.
    I prefer Gibson scale, set neck, 12" fretboard radius and pickup types. I really like the modern Fender C necks over the chunkier & wider Gibson/Epis I've tried, and there's no denying the strat shape is pretty damn easy & comfortable to play. I normally play a Gen2 Revstar & Reverend Warhawk 390.
    That said, I replaced the stock pickups which I found thin sounding, and got rid of the fancy switching options.

  • @Ray-Angel

    I bought mine a couple of months ago and had the same thought about the bridge pickup not making a sound when you pull the volume knob. I took it back to Guitar Center, where i bought it, to exchange it but all the others did the same thing! So, it's either the way it's supposed to be or they're wiring them all wrong at the factory.
    I'm glad to see you compare it with the SG. I traded in an Epiphone SG Classic to get a Strat-o-sonic because the SG neck was too thin and I couldn't get used to it. The Squier neck is much more to my liking.
    I suspected the Squier pickups were lower output but I couldn't remember what mine measured on the Epiphone. I did have to change amp settings for the Squier to get the tone I had from the Epiphone. I'm a fan of low output pickups because you can always use a booster if you need a little more grit. Whereas, high output pickups you start with all the grit and have to roll off the volume to calm them down and that's too much thinking for me. I like to just stomp a pedal and go. I'm pretty happy with the pickups but I'm looking forward to seeing if you swap them out and what you choose.
    I was thinking you may be able to put some plumber's (Teflon) tape on the bridge posts to get a tighter fit. I'll try it next string change.
    As for the scale length, I love the slinky feel. My main guitar is a Hwy1 Strat and of course the Strat-o-sonic feels slinkier than it I think it feels even slinkier than my SG did.
    As for the looks, I really don't like the yellow one. The red is a little too hotrod for me but it's alright. If you check Fender's website, I think they're offering one in blue now as well. I think I'd like a black one. But I don't think a sunburst would look good.
    You didn't mention it had a 12-inch radius fretboard. Another nod to Gibson.
    Overall, I think the Strat-o-sonic is a solid guitar for playing classic rock and Blues. Thanks for the deep dive into it.
    Stay cool.

    Bought one of these a few weeks ago. It is, at heart, a Stratocaster - even despite the wraparound bridge, the P90s, the scale length and the looks. The Indonesian Squiers are a bit iffy in my opinion but the Chinese ones, like this one - are superb. I know what you mean about getting used to Stratocasters. My first decent guitar was a JV Strat, because I couldn't afford to upgrade from my Les Paul copy to a bona fide Les Paul. It was so hard to get used to, but once I did it became my favourite guitar.

    It is the best and most beautiful guitar I have ever had in my life.
    I don't play another guitar anymore.
    Its 24.7" scale (like Gibson) is very comfortable.
    Its solid compensated Wrap-Around bridge gives more sustain.
    The ergonomic body of the Stratocaster is very comfortable.
    The Squier Paranormal STRAT-O-SONIC offers 6 pickup combinations:
    - Bridge.
    - Neck.
    - Both in parallel in phase (the usual).
    - Both in parallel out of phase (great for funk).
    - Both in series in phase (like a humbucker).
    - Both in series out of phase (for funk solos?).
    It has 2 defects:
    - Good extra shielding is necessary. (I have already solved it successfully).
    One of the pickups is RW/RP, so it cancels out hum when both pickups are connected in phase. When both pickups are out of phase or only one pickup is connected, it naturally doesn't suppress the hum.
    - Push/pull switches are very uncomfortable to operate. Conventional toggle switches are better. (I'll fix it soon).

    Hi Colin - I know its nearly a year, but I just watched this again and really enjoyed it - thanks.
    I've been looking inti the switching for these and I think I know how it all works. I was pleased that your video noted the issues with the series switching, because that's what my schematic said would be the case! (And none of the other reviews seemed to mention it). Anyway, if you are interested, I can send you a diagram. Also - I've made a small mod, so that you don't get the cut-off. When the series switch is selected, all three positions of the pickup selector are the same - it's like a series override from any other position. I've heard good demos of the series and parallel out of phase sounds, but as you said, I'm not sure its worth doing.
    I was looking into it for my Les Paul Special inspired guitar - with Epiphone P90 Pro pickups - I like them. If you're ever short of guitars, you can demo that and give me marks out of 10! For anyone interested, a quick search on my channel name will get you to the website - I build my own designs now for charity. Cheers.

    Nice review. I like the concept, and the execution of it looks nice, but I'm not really crazy about the sound of those pickups. They sounded a little dull to me. Too bad it was wired incorrectly. This is nice to see. I would like a P90 guitar and was thinking of building a P90 strat at some point. Maybe I’ll just get this.

    I have the exact guitar and all your critiques are spot on. It’s a great guitar very comfortable to play without the knobs in the way. I put a .25 shim in and that not only leveled out the strings. It just made the entire guitar play and sound better. Eventually it will get new tuners and bridge but it’s fine for now and is my #1 go to guitar. Thank you for the detailed review!

    I’m happy you made this video! I am a Strat player, and I’m mostly not a Gibson person, even though I do have the Epiphone LP Special inspired by Gibson which you reviewed a couple years ago. I generally don’t like Squiers, but this one is actually pretty cool. I might just have to get one since they’re not expensive. I love the p90s, and the stoptail and tune o matic, but my experience with squier necks is that I don’t like them, too thin. Anyway you do a great deep dive on this one. As you always do.

      Oh jeezus! It’s a proper stoptail, not a tune o matic.

    I have one I had built in 1990 by Gilet Guitars. It has a one piece Telle African pink mahogany body in SG candy red, Canadian birds eye maple telle neck, Rosewood fret board, Strat fender lace censor (silver bridge-Gold middle-Blue neck) single coil pups set in a modified strat pearl faceplate. One tone knob is a switch to humbuck the single coils. Same bridge as this guitar you have. It can make any sound profile. Possibly the best guitar of it's type ever built. I haven't found better in 33 years!

    I love the look of it. How about a comparison with one of the Epi P90 double cuts? It’s given me the inspiration to do something similar to a Squier strat I’ve got knocking around too.

    @danstringer7610 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like the way it looks. The Strat w/P90’s that is. I like LP’s with the pick guard if already installed from the factory….due to the holes showing when it is removed. But I love a no pick guard LP if it has a beautiful figured top!

    I like the looks of that guitar, but was not very impressed with the tuner and loose tailpiece issues. I also liked the sound of the SG better. I think that if I wanted to buy a guitar with those specs I'd rather get a Les Paul or SG special and not worry about the pickups. Thanks as always.

  • @mrtod13

    Thanks for doing this one, Col. It's a guitar I've had my eye on for a while and I was thinking of exactly the same mods. I do have the Squeir Paranormal Tornado... Another Gibson scale length Fender
    You might want to try one in the future. Also that had the same rattly tuners. I swapped them for Gotohs... That was harder than expected because the holes needed reaming out.

    Hi there, Colin! Thanks a lot for doing this one, no surprise you chose it for a review with that attitude to strats 😁 I'm with you on the weak bridge pup, "stuff in the way" thing and Gibson scale length. In fact I find this guitar very attractive looking with that red-black color scheme and visible mahogany grain. I'd probably consider buying it if I didn't have a Harley Benton LP DC junior fat with a P90. Also a shame the posts and electronics are not as they should be. Btw I have found a strange thing with P90 guitars though - don't feel the need to have a neck pup as opposed to HB equipped guitars... The neck seems too much on the dull and dark side here IMO, too.

    I used to be an SG player primarily and when I switched to strats I had the tendency to hit the volume knob on accident . Now that I have made the switch and got used to adjusting my playing a bit, I actually use my volume and pickup options more often.

  • @raytorvalds3699
    @raytorvalds3699 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you're doing the pickup swap I'd would definitely replace the pots and cap too.
    As for the looks of the guitar, I like it. I think...
    It's nice that the knobs and switch are out of the way. I hate the placement of them on a Strat too.

    Awesome video, thanks! I picked up this guitar a few months back and I really love it! I too prefer Les Paul type guitars for the same reasons you do. I have a Gibson Les Paul Special with P90s and I wanted something with a different body contour and lighter weight. I also wanted a lesser priced guitar. This one fit the bill perfectly! I cant wait until you upgrade it and I eagerly await the video. BTW that Gibson looks GREAT with or without the pickguard!

    The difference I see between the SG and the Squier is the spacing of the pickups which I'm sure would affect the sound.
    The Bridge pup on the strat is closer to the bridge than on the SG shown and the space between the pups is wider on the strat than the SG from what I can see on this vid.

    Fender/Squier nailed it with the Parallel Universe and Paranormal series. I just picked up a 2020 Uptown II, someone left a comment about it referring to it as, "...looks like a Fenson. Then again, it looks like a Gibder." lol

    As for the bridge ? Well, I just "knew" it would have to go... BUT upon using this "Epi" SOB ... It friggin works ! Sounds great , no buzzes ( like the 6 saddle type can do with those silly retainer wires) Easy to adjust action height (no messin with 6 individual saddles) AND The Mo ' FO ... is properly intoned (intonation was spot on out the box !)
    Now I probably could convince myself that a cool John Mann (of PRS fame) brass bridge with tight brass posts or even bridge replacement may sound better . BUT Johns stuff will greatly add to the cost of this already cool guitar ... And strung under tension... the bridge does not "wobble" (or vibrate or do funky resonances )

    This looks familiar. I modified a used texas blade strat to 2 boutique P90's and 1 volume, 1 tone knobs. Works better for me than the small singlecoils. Now playing it way more.

    I was looking at the one Fender did a few years ago. Not a fan of Strats for the same reasons you discuss but this looks cool, the buttons don’t look like they’ll be in the way and I like the idea of P90s as I was never a fan of the thin strat pickup sounds.

    I converted a Tokai strat to this configuration (more or less - just had one volume knob and a normal-sized pearloid scratchplate). It sounded great but was stolen. It was cream with a rosewood fingerboard. I'd love to get that guitar back again.
