    The manufacturer of my gliding doors state the following: "Do not use lubricants on the track itself; this will cause the rollers to slide, instead of roll. You can either spray the dry lubricant through the adjustment hole or remove the panel and apply the dry lubricant directly to the rollers from the bottom of the panel."

    Thanks for making this video and not giving us the history of sliding doors before showing us how to actually clean and lubricate them❤

  • @jeffersonbuckles8905
    @jeffersonbuckles8905 3 ปีที่แล้ว +63

    I fix these doors for a living. The wheels rotate around ball bearings, lubricating the track won't make the door slide easier. If your door isn't sliding its because the ball bearings the wheel rotates around are worn and imperfect. You need to replace the wheels. The only place lubrication will make a difference is on weather stripping that causes friction. Slippery roads don't make your car faster and a slippery track won't make your door easier to roll.

      Same here, this guy is completely right. Not only the rollers but if your house has settled, the door can be pinched. The silicone lubricant is like a bandage over a much larger issue. Those problems will come back.

    • @zookini33
      @zookini33 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had thought about this before and it makes perfect sense. All you really need to do is keep the tracks clean. Also, some silicone sprays are not meant to be used on plastics, like vinyl. I have a Milgard vinyl patio door, but strangely enough Milgard tells you to use a vinyl lubricant on the door tracks(!). This door is large and very heavy. If I have trouble with it I'll definitely call a professional to fix it.

    • @ktsunami418
      @ktsunami418 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@zookini33 yes aluminum doors would use Silicone Spray Lubricant. Oddly enough, Spray ArmorAll Protectant on your vinyl door instead. You would want to spray the fuzzy trim cuz that would cause the friction when it dries up. also check the gap at the front and back of the door, there should be a gap at least a 1/4 inch from the top of the door and frame up too. If there isn’t that means the house settle and is pinching your door.

    It certainly does help that those sliding glass doors are, like, 18 months old. For folks who have 20+ year old sliding glass doors, roller replacement is usually needed in addition to a good cleaning.

    I was cleaning my sliding door with my dad's help. I told him that the end result should be that the door should slide with just a pinky finger because that's what I've seen in a YT video. I like to buy food-grade silicone spray, you can use it for maintenance purposes like your doors and car weatherstripping and for food processing equipment. I use it on my thermos lid, clean the thermos, spray it lightly, wipe off excess and it will open easily for a few weeks. A video on how to adjust sliding door rollers would make a good follow-up video.

    Yes good vid specially with the screwdriver getting under that roller on each end. I have a brand new Anderson and the first year I could open it with my pinky.. I found the staples sticking through the sheet rock creating drag on the top part of the slider I snip them off and it’s working better but I can’t pinky move it anymore and I’m pissed! my contractor installed moldings inside. since then no more pinky so I’m gonna figure out what’s going on. Now I have to actually grab the handle and slide it like a 10-year-old door. I’m gonna pull the top moldings off and the door it’s only one piece of wood called a stop that holds the door in place. I’m gonna clean the hell out of the track and see what happened I think it’s the molding that did me in.. Hmmmm! Tnks though

    Silicone lubricant versus WD40 which is the best for spraying door rails?

    • @gtdodgeviper
      @gtdodgeviper ปีที่แล้ว

      Different animals. Its like asking what is better for a bicycle chain, oil or water. Oil of course. For the sliding door you want to use silicone spray. Now I think wd40 also makes a silicone spray. Just make sure you don’t use penetrating oil. It will just attract more dirt and it will stick to it.

      No, do not use regular wd-40. They make their own version of silicone spray, which is fine, but typically they charge more than other brands IMHO. Check his links in the description for the proper product, it's only a few bucks.

    Hi, my father cleaned track a few months ago. It was working fine and quiet before he did that, but now it clicks pretty loudly when opening or closing the door, especially the rear rollers. I've cleaned it again and applied silicone spray but it did not help at all. The only thing that I can get it to sound normal for a day or two is to use a slightly wet bar of soap on the tracks and then it slides without any noise. Any ideas on what I can do? Grease maybe?

      have you lowered the wheels to see if there is any obstruction, sometimes hair or clothing thread stuck around them, maybe a cracked wheel or loose. if you think about how the slide works is just two to four wheels on the track(bottom and top depending on model) so if there is nothing on the track it can be the wheel. good luck

      @@StatUpBox When you say "lowered the wheels" did you mean to make the wheels come out further or to go inside further (retract) into the door? I'm a bit puzzled though as to why the soap works a bit especially when opening and closing the door slowly.

    • @StatUpBox

      To come out further to see if you can see anything on the wheel. Would believe that the soap makes almost glide even if the wheel does not turn. Brainstorming mode.

      @@StatUpBox I guess that's possible but I don't know if the door would slide that easily if the wheels were not turning. It is just strange how it started making the sound after he cleaned it a few months ago. Maybe some how he lodged dirt/debris into the wheels or removed debris and that made wheels loose or something. Thanks for your help.

      Swanky Banker (third person above you) just suggested that the ball bearing that the wheel rotates around might be worn and imperfect and might need to be replaced.
