I just moved from Oahu after six years living there, three of those just a 20 minute walk from Waikiki and the Hawaiian Village, I've even worked inside Diamond Head Crater. I want to thank you for finally giving this cocktail a try and more importantly, choosing Koloa Rum for your base. I'm not affiliated with them whatsoever, but you're absolutely correct, a Hawaiian cocktail calls for Hawaiian spirits. While I'm not a fan of rum agricole, Kohana Provisions on Oahu makes a great one. Might be hard to get, but it'll just add to the Hawaiian heritage of the drink. Thanks again!
There is a sugarcane rum “agricole” made on O'ahu by Kō Hana. The white is called Kea and it’s fantastic. You may not be able to get that out of the state or western markets. But if you get your hands on it, that would make a fully Hawaiian rum Blue Hawaii.
I love that you use Koloa rum! We had the great good fortune to live on Kaua’i for a couple of years. I fell in love with Koloa rum, probably mostly because of the memories of the island.
TO THE BAR! ➡️🥃 Assembling a bar cart for my son in law to get him started on his cocktail journey! Cheers Anders and Az! Thanks for all your inspiration, creativity and informative content.
I only worked up my version of this back in the 90s because so many hotel guests asked for it it just could no longer justify saying 'No'. I come to embrace it because it is actually rather good. It is the only blue cocktail I have ever conceded to.

very nice Anders. Glad to see "blue" finally made the cut. One suggestion / request. when you start with a recipe and "tweak" it, can you also post your starting point? It would be really interesting and helpful to see the differences. thanks!!
Your timing is perfect. I was recently thinking about blue cocktails and was like, nah, Anders would never make one. Way to prove me wrong in such an entertaining way!
Thanks for including the timelapse where you were testing different iterations! I would definitely watch an episode where you go through your process for balancing a new drink.
I love Koloa rum! We went to their tasting room on our honeymoon in Hawaii. Their chocolate rum is the best tasting chocolate flavor alcohol I've ever had. I use it instead of chocolate liqueurs in lots of recipes. The coconut rum is also amazing.
You should do a purple cocktail next! XD My friends and I made purple/pink ombré cocktiails with Empress 1908 indigo Gin. It's colored blue with butterfly pea flower, so it's from nature.
This is perfect timing! I’ve actually been playing with this recipe lately! I was using Probitas Light Rum but ran out. I will have to try the Kōloa! Also, I love when you tiki! It’s the best!
I would never order a blue cocktail at a bar because I think that they're generally one-note and overly sweet, but one of my favorite summer cocktails to make at home is a Blue Margarita, which simply substitutes blue Curacao for the Cointreau. Another fave is just to add a shot of blue Curacao to a Pina Colada (Anders' recipe, of course), which I call a Swimming Pool. :)
Yup, this is one the list of things to try. Nice to see the rum agricole comes in a silver. That brand was all I could find locally, but in the gold version, and the folk manning the store didn’t even know they had it. Or what it was. Might try my little battery operated frothing whisk on the pineapple prior to shaking it with the rest, see if any fluffiness survives. 👍🏻🖖🏻
Getting to see and hear your behind the scenes process was riveting. If another opportunity arises in a future video to include similar content you definitely should include it.
I've been searching a long time for a good blue drink to serve in my home tiki bar. I discovered Garret Richard's Blue Leilani, and thought it was delicious. The coconut washed gin, really makes this drink special. I'd like to try your recipe, too! Thanks for the video.
@anderserickson you should make a video of your all time favorite cocktails period. Like top 5 of everything, no narrowing categories. OR (also fun) - your list of 5 cocktails if you could only drink those 5 for the rest of your life.
My husband looooooves blue drinks. Just for the pure theatrics and giggle value. But now that you have the bottle, you need to compare the Corpse Reviver Number 1, 2 and Blue 😁
The colour of a drink affects your enjoyment of it. Harry Yee understood the importance of visual appeal, hence his use of blue curacao and flavourless ornaments such as orchid flowers and umbrellas. These all contribute to a great drinking experience as long as they complement the flavour of the drink and are not just there as a gimmick. It is worth remembering that a lot of other more esteemed ingredients are also dyed for visual appeal. For example, Campari is dyed red, and even a lot of Scotch whisky is coloured with caramel. Food colouring is an ingredient like any other and when used in the right amount and in the right places, it can make something amazing, just like your version of the Blue Hawaii.
So I own no Blue Curacao despite having about 8 orange liquors. So I will be making a yellow/orange/beige (aka the tiki color) hawaii tonight. instead!
