I picked one of these up from a cafe in Tokyo a week or so ago because the barista made me one of the best pour-overs I'd ever had. I got beans, the brewer and the filters. I still haven't been able to completely replicate what she was able to do, but my coffees have still been nice. I'm looking forward to using some of the tips you mentioned. Thanks!
love your method of pinching the filter at the tip! I subconsciously did it on my v60 a few months ago, and have stuck with it till date - subtle, but a much needed boost to the brew's quality!
I'm so glad you made this video! I love the concept of the Deep 27 but haven't been able to get as good of results as with the V60. I'm also sensitive to caffeine and generally drink a single small cup in the morning (like 100 - 150 mL), so it's perfect for me. Really excited to try incorporating these tips. I'm already sure I haven't been seating the filter properly.
hehe thanks for the vids, this brewer already become my daily driver in the past 5 months, basically you nailed every aspect for this dripper. using double temperature for brewing also one of my fav method for this dripper.
Great video! This brewer's a game changer for people with caffeine sensitivity like me. I can now have some regular coffee without suffering too many consequences 😅 I've been experimenting with it for a while now as well and I agree with your tips! I've been using a very similar technique and had some lovely (and consistent) results. Ensuring the bed is even with a lot of agitation and the filter is properly fitted seems to be crucial.
Awesome video. It’s great to have alternatives for smaller amounts of coffee. I usually mix them in a milk drink or if I’m feeling more ambitious, I use the aero press
This has been my favorite brewer for the past 3 or 4 months. I'm going to go try your pulse recipe right now because it has similarities to what I've been doing. I do a 1 minute bloom and then 2 equal pours. Pour 1 is small circles, pour 2 is a straight center pour. I've been loving the results, so I'm excited to see if your recipe improves on it.
Only took me a few minutes of watching your video to know I needed to pick one up and feel confident I'd be able to make good coffee with it! I haven't really been tempted at all to purchase a brewer besides the V60 I already have, but the "end of the bag microdose" has always been a bit annoying. I think the Deep 27 will help turn that annoyance into a special "treat" instead! Although I've been brewing with V60 for months now, I feel like I'm still working to understand exactly how to get what I want out of it consistently. You're previous video on pourover variables was very helpful, and with the information in this video I'm curious if I'll be able to get even more consistent results with the Deep 27 than my V60. Thanks again for all the wonderful content you create! It's very much appreciated! 😊
My problem is the filters. I haven't found a source for filters besides cafec usa directly and their shipping cost is pretty ridiculous for shipping a few packs of filters
@@aramse have you tried using v60 filters ?😅 I haven’t, but I’ve heard people are folding the v60 paper filters in a way that would fit the D27, but haven’t seen a video 😕

going by brian quan's video where the cafec ceo was first showcasing the deep 27, cafec's ideal use case in mind is single cup osmotic flow where "without thinking a single thought, you pour water right in the middle". so it's probably best suited for when you have fresh, dark beans ground course and a kettle with a long thin spout that can pour with laminar flow at a very low flow rate
What is that stirer tool you have there? Looks really handy. My F27 arrived today so looking forward to trying your advice and having smaller brews without breaking out the cezve.
Great video! I just got the deep 27, because I'm Sensitive to caffeine (my go to is 12g), my brews have been good, but lacking some body, and pretty thin, so i will try the recipes in the video, so far, for the 12g doses, i do find the V60 gives me better results, but im excited to try adding agitation.
Update, just tried it, seated the filter according to your recommendation as well, and wow, I was going to kind of abandon this dripper, but I think you just changed that, thank you!
I just had my first flower brew and used your second recipe. I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us! It made me wonder, how would you expect a pulse brew to taste with a v60? I’m used to a bloom followed by a single pour and the 4:6 methods. I’m wondering what I should think pulsing brings in general and not just this one recipe. Thanks!
Is there a kettle with a shower spout? The best coffee I ever had was from an old (French-made) Krups F468 MokaBrew. It let me wet the bed (of coffee) with a uniform set of gentle droplets over the entire surface, which I could give a few seconds to go through. Then the next set of droplets and wait... It was 100% reliable without fussing.
I'd have already bought this if they had a glass/ceramic version. Thanks for the thorough review Aramse. Also, being a user of the Philos i200d, how is yours configured? (burr lock at 0 or burr chirp at 0). And also, which grind setting are you using for V60 / Deep27 brews. I know I need to adjust to taste but I'm mostly curious.
for setting the filter, wouldn't wetting the dripper first help? Wet, put in filter, then rinse. That helps with V60 to get the paper to stick in place
Once it’s wet it really difficult to slide down to the lowest position. It sticks to the walls. In most cases it’s better to get the filter in position when it dry and then wet it to set it.
Hi :) amazing video as always. Just one thing; I think cafiza is not recomended for plastics, maybe a soak in hot water with odorless dish soap is good enough
The small dose is exactly why I ordered one. Limiting my caffeine intake is important to me. Got a chuckle out of your tasting comment. At some point you have to put the thesaurus away and drink the coffee. You mention it only has a single filter option. Have you tried the Chemex Funnex or its filters?
The Chemex has smooth walls and very low bypass making the flow rate way slower and I really didn't love the style of brews I got from it. A big reason for the quality of the cups out of the D27 is how fast it is.
Oh, I got myself a coffee advent calendar. Each packet is 20 g, which is too much for my afternoon coffee, so I am dividing it between 2 brews. I have a 1 c V60, so not too big, but this would be perfect. For sure I need a 15th coffee brewer, right?
You owe me a cup of coffee cuz your bypass joke made me ROFL and my coffee was everywhere except my mouth. Jokes apart, good stuff guys. Loved the review and the script.
I loved my plastic cafec flower but it started cracking from the heat around a year later. I bought a ceramic flower though the coffee it made didn't taste quite the same. I went back to my v60 after that
@@aramse Took me several months to figure out the proper way of placing the filter. It often got too deep and clogged everything after raising the ball. But after I started to preheat by pouring VERY slowly and the filter didn't slide all the way down things got so much better and more consistent. Also got down from 15/250 to 12.5/250 and grind 078 pretty coarse at 12 and lowest rpm with cold start
I'm always worried about wear and microplastics when using an abrasive cleaning method. I'm sure a toothbrush will work well it'll definitely damage the surface.
Interesting review with a lot of things that match my experience and some that don't. 1. Other filters. If you unfold a D27 filter, you'll find the tip makes a 90° angle. A large Chemex filter square makes four small squares and you can fold the small squares into the appropriate shape for a D27. Should Cafec stop making D27 filters or should the filters become too expensive, that's always an easy solution. Not issues with fitting as long as I prewet at the sink. 2. For larger doses (15g), I haven't found bypass to be an issue. I think that the pressure difference between the top of the water column and the bottom of the coffee bed make it so that nearly all the water goes through the coffee bed anyway, water at the top doesn't exert a lot of pressure sideways and therefore doesn't "leak" a lot at the top. This might be different for a shallower bed. This was confirmed by extraction numbers at 20% to 24% depending on grind size, pour structure and coffee origins. 3. Consequently, I haven't found much issue brewing with bloom plus two, three, or four pours and agitating with the kettle stream. I suspect this might also have to do with fact that 250g of water provides much more agitation than 160g of water despite a 10g dose needing as much agitation if not more than a 15g dose. 4. The plastic has been holding steady for me. I've had mine for four months and despite daily brews it has retained its shine and shows zero crack (unlike transparent V60s). Longer experience is needed, but so far so good. 5. In fact, it has replaced my V60 and my Cafec Flower, these days, it's either D27 or Espro Bloom when I go for flat bottom.
1. Thanks for the tip. Have you compared the brews, I always preferred the stock ones even when folding flat filter evenly on all sides. It's also a bit annoying to do every time I want to brew, but that's just me. Haha 2. Oh I never said 15g+ has bypass issues. I just prefer the profile of the brews out of the v60 at those doses. Again personal preference. 3. Yes, with a higher volume you have more contact time and can get away with fewer pours. Tbh you can do smaller doses with fewer pours but with 6-8 pours you can really bump up extraction and sweetness without any astringency. 4. I've hand mine for a year and it still look pristine. 5. I still love the v60 but I too use the D27 more these days.
1. Yes, I have compared, though I don't really have a preference for either, I think stock is marginally faster and fresher, Chemex with a single layer on all sides is marginally more transparent and sweet. 2. 15g is actually the upper limit of my single person brew, I tend to go for 14 most often. Surprisingly, despite its shape, D27 doesn't taste like a super v60 but somewhere between a V60 and a flat brewer, but closer to a v60 to me. 3. Yes, with smaller doses, I tend to up the number of pours too. 4. I wish all plastics in coffee brewers were like that resistant. 5. Same.
If the walls are flat you won't have this fast of a flow rate, which key to the cups this brewer delivers. The Chemex 3 cup is very similar with smooth walls but I'm not a fan of that.
Usually between 600-800 depending on what I’m trying to highlight in the coffee. Sometimes a tad finer if I just feel like a really sweet cup that’s not super clear.
Still dont understand why ratios are so high. Even a kid can simply do a test by spooning the bottom of the pour as it's been extracted. one could notice that around a 1:9 - 1:12 ratio the coffee coming out is so watered down and hollow. It makes no sense for it to be in your cup.
I fear that as coffee producing areas are further impacted by climate change, using less coffee per cup may become the norm. It's good to know that people are playing around with new things like this.
Interesting. So long "everybody" waa saying the 3Cup Chemex is no good, because of the steep angle bla bla. No so many people are excited about this- so the question is: Is there anything this does better, habe we not been ready then
...which would be better due to the issue with bypass and too fast brews....? I mean, I watch every of your videos, because they are so well crafted, so there is no need to agree with everything, I just wonder what makes the 3 cup chemex so "bad" in comparison
Checked all the audio tracks. Sounds about right but it's just super weird and some languages have to go super fast to keep up. The original track is just unbeatable and way funnier
This looks like it's too much of a fuss. I don't see a reason to pick this one up over an aeropress, where you can afford to grind even finer for more extraction in regards to smaller doses.
The AP is great but the profile of the brews is completely different. This gives you a cone style profile with tiny doses and I haven't used any other dripper that can do this.
Everyone who ever wanted a dripper already has one. And your $40 Indian filter can be had for like $10-$15 bucks anywhere else. Annoying how coffee has become this consumerist grift...
By far one of the funniest videos you’ve done. Great stuff!

Pro Tip (heh): No import fees from Japan if you’re in the EU!
aramse bhai, aramse. lol
nice "deep" dive
I fear that as coffee producing areas are further impacted by climate change, using less coffee per cup may become the norm. It's good to know that people are playing around with new things like this.
"More bypass than a 90 year old heart patient." 🤣🤣
Interesting.
So long "everybody" waa saying the 3Cup Chemex is no good, because of the steep angle bla bla.
No so many people are excited about this- so the question is:
Is there anything this does better, habe we not been ready then
The chemex has no ridges so the flow is way slower.
...which would be better due to the issue with bypass and too fast brews....?
I mean, I watch every of your videos, because they are so well crafted, so there is no need to agree with everything, I just wonder what makes the 3 cup chemex so "bad" in comparison
Checked all the audio tracks. Sounds about right but it's just super weird and some languages have to go super fast to keep up. The original track is just unbeatable and way funnier
Most days, when TH-camrs open with hypotheticals, I don't find it very relatable. Today is not that day.
That opening was me sharing a deeply personal experience and I knew I couldn't be the only one. Haha. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
Even though I sound like a pretentious…. 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Love your content. Please keep making awesome videos @aramse
I don't get enough plastics in my body these days so pouring nearly boiling hot water through a plastic cone sounds like the perfect solution.
Annoying how coffee has become this consumerist grift...
the f-bombs are unnecessary and off-putting
I enjoyed them
I thought they were executed in quite a charming way and found them fun (and I'm somewhat averse to excessive expletive use).
Just being me on camera tbh. If you met me in person then you'd know I'm a bit of a potty mouth. Haha.
Okay, but why u curse so much ?! That doesn't make cool or edgy! u look and sound like robot actually reading from script ، you should do better 👌🤍'
