  • How to install a short shifter into your Miata! Jesse got this one on Ebay for $28 and figured it was worth a shot to see how it works! It works well actually installed, however the install process was not as smooth as a more expensive/reputable one may have been!

    Love your channel, best short shifter installation I have seen so far. Thanks for making this video.

      Thank you very much for the kind words! We have actually gotten a bit of flack for this video(well deserved) because I did not do enough research ahead of time and while I had pulled and reinstalled factory shifters before we were not familiar with some of the parts and process. Either way my shifter is still in my car as it was installed in this video and working great, cool upgrade for so cheap. Thanks for the kind words and to anyone else that sees this we will do our best to have things more thoroughly planned out in the future!

      @@GearHeadsGarageChannel no worries your video is the most detailed one by far, I have watched many other ones done by other people and they are not so helpful many of the steps are missed or not mentioned. I just installed mine tonight after watching your video last night, and I have got the part 2 years ago from ebay haha. It helped a lot and I just wanted to say thank you!!

    You should install the existing lower plastic ring under the shift pivot sphere, and the new one included with the kit on top of the shifter pivot sphere. There should be one ring either side.

      +BEAVIS Motorsport Trust me, I tried a few different ways(including the way you describe) and this definitely fit the best! Since it didnt work the "proper" way we took it apart and put it back together differently 4 times and doing it this way it came out good and works perfect!

      I know this is a year late but didn't you also forget to put the small rubber boot back on?

    • @GearHeadsGarageChannel
      @GearHeadsGarageChannel  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe we didn't show it but the rubber boot is most certainly there. Makes a big difference for noise and heat in the cabin!

  • @les6paul
    @les6paul 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have now done this on two miatas. Neither was due to a desire to mod the car. In both cases it was due to a bad shifter bushing. I do like the shorter throw though.

  • @TheOnlyToblin
    @TheOnlyToblin 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good thing to remember if you're doing this on an NB is that the NB has TWO grooves in the shifter base and also does not come with fluid in the turret itself. The turret is part of the transmission so lube comes from below. Never fill fluid in your NB turret!

    • @GearHeadsGarageChannel
      @GearHeadsGarageChannel  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The NB turret you can just delete one of the pins if installing one like this! I should have mentioned that.

  • @ml082157
    @ml082157 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The original plastic bushing goes under the ball turret and the new plastic goes on top. May tighten the clamp allowance and save the ball from metal to metal contact. I have seen a spring collar in some sets.

  • @cardiffkook92007
    @cardiffkook92007 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The pin doesn't have to be hammered out, plus you need to install the wavy washer at the top of the plastic bushing to put pressure on the shifter and that keeps in in place = that way you wouldn't of had to of cut down the other bushing. I ordered this shifter due to wear on my C's shifter which isn't made any longer = so we'll see how this goes.

      I just like seeing people take a little extra time and do things right, like changing out the shifter oil and using the old bushing to make it fit more firmly.

    • @GearHeadsGarageChannel
      @GearHeadsGarageChannel  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea well If somethings worth doing its worth doing it right, I should have changed the rubber boot while I was in there but I'll do it when we do the engine swap since its all coming apart again soon anyways =P and when you get ebay parts sometimes you just gotta find a way to make things work!

  • @jakeguitarbass7209

    Why do you even blame on ebay? Ebay is just a place were you buy stuff from other people. Ebay isn't a brand for parts like this.

    • @GearHeadsGarageChannel
      @GearHeadsGarageChannel  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Jake We know this, just when you say "Ebay parts" most people are of the understanding that you mean cheap random parts from China. Many of these parts are sold under all kinds of different fake company names etc. but all come from the same random factory, its easier to just refer them as Ebay parts because if it was actually made by any noteworthy company you would just say that was who made it, these are more unknown.

    Great video guys! Quick question tho, is the shifter a bit taller than the stock one or is that just your aftermarket shift knob?

    • @GearHeadsGarageChannel
      @GearHeadsGarageChannel  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MiataMods Well that shift Knob actually is lower than stock cus its threaded deeper....idk if this is high or not, havent measured it! its not that significant either way tho, I can say the throw is wayy shorter!

    • @MiataMods
      @MiataMods 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm maybe it's just the camera angle.. thanks for the response tho!

  • @PeelePowered

    You don't hammer that pin at all... you just get the bushing out with your fingers

    • @GearHeadsGarageChannel

      Nick Peele Wont come out without getting the pin back, unless maybe yours was super worn out and thinner?

    • @PeelePowered
      @PeelePowered 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jared Flemer At the moment not running it since the engine swap cus I swapped transmissions too. I honestly like both, the stock one is very good and more comfortable to use, and the short one feels really tight and sporty so its good too

      Jose Martinez Not worth doing, its the same generic part sold by many ebay sellers and they sellers come and go often. Its quite obvious all the basic kits are the same if you just search ebay for a Miata short shifter kit.
