Considering this was Carlin’s 14th album & his 8th HBO special recorded April 24th & 25th 1992, there were very, very few African Americans that held memberships in golf. Charlie Sifford was the 1st pro African American. To this day there are only “4” pro African Americans that are “pro’s”. That’s the reasoning behind Carlin’s so- called “racist” remark. Mostly today the only African American players you ever hear about playing “golf” are pro sport athletes.
It also doesn't help that you have to have a pretty decent income to even afford to play the game between equipment fees and membership the country club (some of which you can't even buy your way into if you're the wrong color). Non-forgetting needing enough leisure time to be able to spend hours on a sport. It's in no way a sport for the poor.

I've always liked Carlin and found him funny as hell. But for his sake I hope he was trying to be funny and not on some moral high horse. If he was then he needed to look into a mirror. He was worth over ten million when he died and lived in a very large and cushy house in LA. I'd say about 4k-6k sq ft. and a pool. Pretty sure from the looks of the place there was no low income housing or drug rehab clinics right around the corner. Also his net worth would put him in the richest one percent of people on the planet. I don't begrudge anyone making as much money as they can or living a comfortable life...what I do have an issue with is virtue signaling. His bit would have been funnier if he'd taken the time to point the finger at himself and been real about why it is people, including himself, weren't lining up to live in rough neighborhoods. Instead he points the finger everywhere else.

Also, golf and country clubs do have a pretty racist history at least, and a lot of country clubs didn’t allow POC to join until very recent times. It took a lot longer to break some of those barriers than other sports because golf is a pretty expensive hobby engaged in by mostly upper middle class and above, and classism is obviously quite connected to racism. It often seems like the fewer POC participating in certain hobbies, the longer it takes for those hobbies to integrate. The Masters didn’t invite a Black golfer to compete until 1975, but exclusively used Black golf caddies to serve the golfers until the 1980s. Lee Elder literally had to rent two houses and move between them during the tournament to avoid racist attacks because people were pissed about a Black competitor being allowed. The co-founder of Augusta reportedly said, “as long as I’m here, the golfers will be white and the caddies will be black.” And that sentiment in Country Clubs was not rare. Ultimately imo, it’s the elitist culture that is the issue. It’s mostly a classism thing nowadays, and unfortunately that means that a lot of POC and other marginalized groups are not able to participate as much as white people, even if there are no policies purposefully keeping POC out. My dad is the only Native American at his country club, and nearly everyone else there is white. It’s not like everyone there is racist (although some are), it’s just that most people in general can’t afford it, which unfortunately means it’s even less attainable for groups who are disproportionately affected by poverty.
It has to be remembered that this was aired in 1992, pre Tiger Woods. At that time, with regards to your "typical" country club, he was correct. Not quite as bad today.
The idea behind golf courses is the same as the idea behind massive gardens and lawns of castles meant to show how much usable land they could afford to waste. That is how it is uniquely elitist.
My favorites are 'Saving the Planet' and 'Religion is Bullshit'. I love watching reactions to 'Saving the Planet' in particular because you can watch enlightenment visibly colliding with popular opinion.
He's not "starting early" - it's a ten minute clip in the middle of an hour special. just sayin. I love that you've been reacting to so much George Carlin recently!!
Just a quick one. The meaning he said racist, was due to the time when he did this routine. I think it was before the peeps like Tiger Woods were in the game/famous and before acceptance was the norm. However must say I love your vids and your takes are always interesting. Takecare. Regards.
"He doesn't care about your feelings" - that's the thing, the only people we should expect to care about our feelings are our close ones - family and friends. Unfortunatelly ppl became snowflakes who get "offended" (like anyone should care about that) because of everything, even the truth. And the fact that word "retards" became "offensive" speaks a lot too - GC did a great bit about euphemisms too (it's usually titled "soft language").

I literally discovered your channel about 2 hours before this video got posted, through your Carlin reactions. The GOAT comedian. I’d suggest his TV debut from 1965, just to see the progression in television, comedy, Carlin, and entertainment itself
When I hear "modern" people say "he said it out loud". Yes he did...because facts dont give a shit about your feelings. Also, he was a proper liberal...freedom above all else.
If you enjoy he's comedy you would really enjoy some of the political interviews and shows he's was on. He truly had something to tell us unfortunately he passed before the US got very politically driven.
Keep in time this video was made. I never played golf but know many who do and he is spot on about how things were. Yes, times have changed for the better.
I enjoy your videos and respect your open minded attitude. Unlike most podcasters, who focus on one area of expertise, you chose a topic you don't know about and let us see your first reaction. It's fun to see how you react to music, comedy, etc on the first listen.
I love that you predicted the direction of his bit as early as a minute into this show. Just goes to show that you are as relevant as anyone on these topics. Thanks again for another Carlin reaction! Great content!
I love the perspective you add to these videos based on your life experiences. It's nice to see someone so well-spoken give opinions on these famous video clips.
He earned the ire of the wall-street types for this bit. He was also referring to the type of golf that is not accessible to normal ordinary people. Hes talking about the kind of golf located in places that only a 1%'r would go, which is probably so exclusive that even tiger woods would only get in if hes carrying a tray.
I feel compelled to recommend one of Carlin's most vicious pieces... which can usually be found as "Natural Disasters" or "Trillion Daves". Fun factoid: I understand that just before 9/11 happened, Carlin was about to start a new show, but the title had to be changed... because the original title was "I kinda like it when a lot of people die".
I totally agree on golf 100% with him! Boring freaking game definitely! Houselessness is getting worse and worse by the day in America and nobody seems to care! R.I.P the legend Carlin!
One thing I'll say is I'm super grateful that I'll have your videos to keep me somewhat sane I'll be in a nursing home/rehab facility after my leg is removed next week for an unknown amount of time.
Okay but on the golf taking up way too much land topic. I’m left thinking about how GTA V solved the space issue. (Anyone who doesn’t know/remember, you can play golf in GTA V.) They solved this problem by taking it down from 18 holes to 9 holes. So they squeezed this 9 hole course into a small area and it was still “fun” to play. Golf courses do not NEED all of those holes. Who tf decided that 18 holes was the standard??? Also if you think about it, if you cut every golf course in half (or maybe down to 10 holes, it’s a more satisfying number) it would also HALVE maintenance costs, while allowing people who enjoy golf to still be able to play the game AND make more room to fit low-cost/income housing.
@MrLboyd Reacts ...I am a recent subscriber to your channel and while i am a fan of your specific content i must say that your George Carlin reactions are ones i especially enjoy. Mostly because my father described George Carlin as "less of a comedian and more of a prophet" (which now that i am actively typing out makes me think i finally have some understanding as to why my internet nickname is Drunk!)...look the point being is that im about four shots of tequila in and i think this video is the best damn piece of entertainment ive stumbled across in my recommended section today....but then again, what do i know, im just some Drunk guy lol

The best idea I've heard is to invoke eminent domain on the dying mall paradigm, and comondeer the unused infrastructure. It's already got food courts, power, and water. Each storefront could be repurposed into single family homes; anchor stores could be community centers, a farm, and so on. It could be completely self sustainable, and the tenants could be employed within the works of the facility
The face of confusion at this moment 12:53 cracked me up. I always get a good laugh when I see someone *legitimately* do a double take at something that catches them off-guard or bewilders them.
I love it. These guys obviously watched the video before. Then they try to pass stuff off like they where thinking about it. And as in this case George mentions something its always'' See guys what did I say'' or its '' thats what i was saying''
I'm glad you were fortunate enough to encounter a Country Club that is, at least, modern. Country Clubs are notorious for "limiting" their memberships to white males only.
This was probably my favorite of your reactions because of the intellectual stimulation. I know Carlin is from a different cut of cloth than most comedians, so a reaction to another comedy skit might not be as thought-provoking, but it’s something you might want to visit again. This was really good. Two thumbs up.
Great reaction!!! Please do more George Carlin. Loved the way you gave such entertaining comments along the way. I would love you to react to some early stuff from 'Larry the Cable Guy'. I enjoy your channel very much!!!
I really enjoy listening to you sir! I wish there were more people like you as neighbors. This man is like Christ that had come back, bit really pissed off this time!!
I wonder what golfer hurt George when he was younger. A better solution for homelessness would be to use the dozens of decommissioned military bases. They already have housing, recreational facilities, stores, and infrastructure in place. A little refurbishment would be all that is needed.
When I listened to you, basically, anticipate Carlin's monologue, I was sincerely impressed. Spending an evening picking your brain would be thoroughly engaging, sir.
It's funny that in the 90s in Riverside California, some of the homeless population got together and actually published a magazine called the River Bottom Monkey that featured articles with tips on how to successfully lead a homeless life. The back cover usually had something in large lettering along the lines of "WILL WORK FOR FOOD" or "WILL WORK FOR MONKEY".
Heres a bit of information . . . PBS use to air a kids show called "Shining Time Station" with Thomas the Tank Engine. George Carlin was "Mr. Conductor" on this program for a couple yrs if not mistaken. Along with Ringo Starr of the Beatles and Levar Burton. Also, Denny Doherty from the Mama' and the Papa's was on Theodore the Tugboat as the Harbor Master.
George Carling an absolute LEGEND, truth teller, on point and your right never gave a f#@k about tour feelings. If your offended with what he says.......you are missing the point!!!
About the bit regarding golf courses. Even as someone that likes golf I can admit it is horribly wasteful. tens of thousands of acres across the United States that could be homes or even better, farmland. Golf courses use insane amounts of fertilizer, weed killer, and irrigation that is just terrible for the local ecology. I think the best place for houseless people would be to convert old strip malls. Where I live, Columbia, SC, there are miles upon miles of essentially deserted landscape. Roads near the house I grew up once had every chain restaurant you could name, but as subdivisions spread out the restaurants followed. Now if you look at places like Two Notch Rd or Decker Blvd, there are just hundreds of acres of empty buildings and parking lots. Unfortunately the Capitalists would rather watch it all rot in hopes of one day selling for money than to pass it to those in need.
I really love your reactions. From Chris Stapleton to George himself. I feel like we would have a lot to discuss, perhaps without knowing it, you create a bond with your viewers. Great stuff!
I've been following you and these reaction types of videos. You have this unique quality, if I may, sir - you are super polite and gentlemanly. Very endearing, so I LOVE your reactions to swear words 😂 Really love your videos ❤
Don't like to stroke your ego, but goddamn you nailed it with George about him declaring war on everything. Was waiting for him to say it to see your reaction. It's like with the other video where you advance where he is going,
Golf is an elitist game for the rich. Other people engage in it but the very form and structure of the game speaks of how wasteful it is. Great austrian director, Haneke, used golf as a symbol of capitalism is his movie, Funny Games.

It has to be remembered that this was aired in 1992, pre Tiger Woods. At that time, with regards to your "typical" country club, he was correct. Not quite as bad today.
“Golf has too much walking to be a good game, and just enough game to spoil a good walk.” - Harry Leon Wilson
The idea behind golf courses is the same as the idea behind massive gardens and lawns of castles meant to show how much usable land they could afford to waste. That is how it is uniquely elitist.
LMAO! "Oh, he hates Golf"
OMG! GC is great, I remember this special so vividly, "Jamin' in New York" 1992:) I was 17-years-old at the time..
3:27 In my country, the homeless have a magazine. It's called 'Kings of the street' (or 'Street Kings'). Written by homeless people, printed on the cheapest paper so they can sell it instead of begging for money.
I literally discovered your channel about 2 hours before this video got posted, through your Carlin reactions. The GOAT comedian.
I’d suggest his TV debut from 1965, just to see the progression in television, comedy, Carlin, and entertainment itself
Closest my family's ever been to being in a country club was when my sister had a job cleaning the bathrooms in one.
Awesome. Love to see more Carlin. I recommend "You Have No Rights" and "Flying on the Airlines".
One of the only comedians that made us laugh while thinking at the same time. Loved Carlin!!!
You're kidding right? You know he was a comedian in the late 60s and 70s right? 🤣
One thing I'll say is I'm super grateful that I'll have your videos to keep me somewhat sane I'll be in a nursing home/rehab facility after my leg is removed next week for an unknown amount of time.
everybody is a kindred spirit with George Carlin.
I think that George is the most unfiltered person on [was] the planet. Total Respect!
He was so brilliant!
Love George #RIP🙏🏻
Great reaction, he makes you think. and glad to see you gave it thought
George was my favorite comedian growing up.
During Tiger Wood's career there was a vote to allow black people at Agusta National where the Master's is held.
everything Prof Carlin did was golden. TY for this one Mr Boyd! ♥
bro you are totally carlin's kindred spirit. you fucking nailed it every time. love your stuff.
They opened up a half-way house here in my town some years ago and people went ape-sh!t over it. Like jeez, calm your ass down.
Thank you so much for reacting to this!
one of Carlin’s best stand up bits (try to have anyone you know who is obsessed with Golf watch this there’ll either get it or blow a gasket! The man wasn’t wrong huge waste of so much land to feed the ego of people
The best idea I've heard is to invoke eminent domain on the dying mall paradigm, and comondeer the unused infrastructure. It's already got food courts, power, and water. Each storefront could be repurposed into single family homes; anchor stores could be community centers, a farm, and so on. It could be completely self sustainable, and the tenants could be employed within the works of the facility
Subbed. You're very intelligent. Love your reaction!!
The face of confusion at this moment 12:53 cracked me up. I always get a good laugh when I see someone *legitimately* do a double take at something that catches them off-guard or bewilders them.
💙💙💙 “Let me think about this for a sec…” during a comedy skit. Too perfect, lol! Only Carlin and only you!
The brilliance of George Carlin is partly the the rhythmic timing and musicality of his dialog...it doesn't land as well when paused every 9 seconds 🙄
Great point 👍
Keep in mind that this bit was from nearly 30 years ago. A lot of the wealthy elitist country clubs were still not letting minorities participate.
I love it. These guys obviously watched the video before. Then they try to pass stuff off like they where thinking about it. And as in this case George mentions something its always'' See guys what did I say'' or its '' thats what i was saying''
This was 35yrs ago
Golf clubs have changed since then
It's the culture that surrounds golf that he hates more than the game itself
I'm glad you were fortunate enough to encounter a Country Club that is, at least, modern. Country Clubs are notorious for "limiting" their memberships to white males only.
This was probably my favorite of your reactions because of the intellectual stimulation. I know Carlin is from a different cut of cloth than most comedians, so a reaction to another comedy skit might not be as thought-provoking, but it’s something you might want to visit again. This was really good. Two thumbs up.
much LOVE ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Great reaction!!! Please do more George Carlin. Loved the way you gave such entertaining comments along the way. I would love you to react to some early stuff from 'Larry the Cable Guy'. I enjoy your channel very much!!!
I really enjoy listening to you sir! I wish there were more people like you as neighbors.
This man is like Christ that had come back, bit really pissed off this time!!
Not sure if you have watched his take on The Ten Commandments yet but it’s definitely worth your time. He is Legend.
I wonder what golfer hurt George when he was younger. A better solution for homelessness would be to use the dozens of decommissioned military bases. They already have housing, recreational facilities, stores, and infrastructure in place. A little refurbishment would be all that is needed.
I wish there were videos from his early work. He concentrated on language. He has an amazing vocabulary! And he is a genius of play on words.
great reaction, want to see you react to his dirty words bit, that's hillarious.
You are by far one of the most distinguished people I’ve come across. Not just reactors. Your way of speaking, sir, is incredibly particular.
I love George Carlin!
George Carling an absolute LEGEND, truth teller, on point and your right never gave a f#@k about tour feelings. If your offended with what he says.......you are missing the point!!!
I love Robin Williams views on golf too. The origin of golf in Scotland
12:48 MrLboyds reaction to George's "expletive expression" was priceless! Absolutely cracked me for 5mins. Couldn't have planned it!
I've been following you and these reaction types of videos. You have this unique quality, if I may, sir - you are super polite and gentlemanly. Very endearing, so I LOVE your reactions to swear words 😂
Really love your videos ❤
Don't like to stroke your ego, but goddamn you nailed it with George about him declaring war on everything. Was waiting for him to say it to see your reaction. It's like with the other video where you advance where he is going,
You need to appreciate the time that this was recorded, things were very diffrent.
Hello americans.. did you know that 13th amendment still allows slavery in prison?
So america still has slavery in the constitution.
I live in a small little city. It has summer cottages for well off folk. And we have 3 golf courses, though one got turned into a dog park thing.
More George Carlin please!
6:22 Yeah, It's all because of Christopher Columbus
Baseball vs. football. Brilliant!
"Caddy Shack" is a must watch!!!!!
I think you’ve missed the whole point of him taking a golf course
Lolz, you two do think alike. You keep calling it perfectly.
You are a smart person bro, really love your content
True! A war on cancer. The war on drugs has ruined so many lives. I really appreciate your videos.
More George Carlin please
Let it go brother.
Golf is an elitist game for the rich. Other people engage in it but the very form and structure of the game speaks of how wasteful it is. Great austrian director, Haneke, used golf as a symbol of capitalism is his movie, Funny Games.
Watch his segment "Flying on the Airlines." Absolutely and utterly hysterical.
