@@bobu4055I have to agree with Hooper on his lock outs. He did lock out his elbows and made eye contact, so per the rules he properly completed the reps
The coolest thing about strongman is you don’t have to win to be considered one of the greats. You just have to show your giving it your all and have respect for the sport and competitors
Yeah, the Rogue was something else this year. Weather, constantly changing events, canceling an event, unclear signaling and referee judgement.... Oh well. Good job by the guys though. Absolutely gutted for Trey Mitchell, that's a shit injury to deal with.
Mitch's accent isn't Canadian. It's a weird mix of Australian and Canadian. Also, I believe the weight this year is heavier, and last year briefs were allowed, which Novikov seems to get a lot out of, hence him being down this year.
@@A-A-RonDavis2470 wouldn't blame on event - sure it was executed poorly, it was too heavy and probably too inconsistent across the athletes, but there were cases of numerous Achilles tears in regualr vechicle pulls before. Trey also got bigger which could lead him to use levearages he used to do at lighter body weight, not realizing it's quite risky to push that hard. Injuries happen, that's part of the sport. I wish Trey a full recovery, he is such a likeable guy.
I'm sorry to say it but this year's Rogue was a big disappointment in terms of spectator-friendly events. What even was The Duel? It was over before I could tug my foreskin back. The Rogue-A-Coaster is always the best tho, love that event
The log lift rule is dumb as hell and I'm still pissed about it. Mateusz drops his last rep as soon as he hears the whistle and so did I think two others. Meanwhile Mitch just sits there for what feels like forever.
Mitch knew the rules and specifically said he was going to make sure he had the log in his lap before the timer expired. Everyone had this information.
I timed it. After his 8th rep he spent 20 seconds catching his breath before touching the log again. He started to lap the log 4 seconds before the whistle. He held the log in lap position for 2 seconds before the whistle blew. He kept the log lapped for another 3 seconds past the whistle. He then cleaned and pressed the log and got the down call in 9 seconds. That means he essentially had another 12 seconds over the time limit to get that rep. That's essentially a 13.34% advantage, without factoring in the rest time between the 8th and 9th rep that he could afford due to going over the time limit. Not knocking Hooper for taking advantage of the rules in that way, but it's a silly rule in the first place. What was stopping him from lapping it at 1:29 and holding it lapped for 30 seconds to catch his breath? As far as I know, that wasn't against the rules. Do we really want this to become a normal gimmick that each athlete does? I don't want that. It's a very very VERY inconsistent rule in my opinion. Hopefully they learned their lesson and don't implement it ever again.
At one point in Worlds Ultimate Strongman Mateusz hit 420 kg in the deadlift although with a suit. Really thought he had unlocked his deadlift at that point and that he would progress even further. Unfortunately his injuries ruined that promise😢😅
I think Bobby has added a lot of quality mass aswell as getting rid of some fluff, at the Arnolds he had a similiar look and it was his best performance in a long time. Getting #1 in max deadlift too. Something to do with ‘diet’ for sure, and better training maybe. He’s working with Loz, same as Hooper. Love these types of videos btw
Well, he tied 3rd at Arnold's 2 years ago, before he went the leaning process. I guess it will benefit him more, he didn't lose ton of static strength and he surely is more athletic and conditioned.
I'd love to see you do a video critiquing viewer submitted lifts. The way you break down Evan's deadlift makes me fear for how hard you'd call me out. 😂
Hoopers reps on the deadlift and log press got the quickest down signals out of all of the athletes. I feel Rogue wanted him to win. He's their boy. Makes a further case for the point that you don't have to be excessively big to win at the top level. He promotes crossfit also.
I didn't see that on the deadlift. I saw a few that lingered but it looked like it was because the judge wasn't convinced on the lockout. You'll see the guys who got multiple reps getting faster downs early on when the bar is moving quick and be made to hold it when it gets grindy. But I don't know what their bias would be with Mitch. He was unknown until a couple of years ago and doesn't have near the following or recognition of the other guys. To clarify on the size thing......Mitch is an extreme outlier that can perform without being excessively big (I would specify further 'given this current field); given whatever genetic package any one else has, adding as much mass as possible is their most likely route to being able to hang with these weights. I do think that if we were in an era of peak Thor/Hall/Shaw, Mitch's package wouldn't cut it for a title, but we will see if this batch ends up in another arms race for static records and bulking to high heavens.
@@AlexanderBromleyI truly believe Hooper would win prime Hall in an average strongman competition tho. Hooper is much more well rounded. And would be much closer to hall in the placings for static than hall would be to Hooper in moving events
@@kellypitts8481 He's def stronger than I probably ever will be.... but I know getting overly hyped works to my detriment, I'm more likely to get lightheaded/see-stars/blackout if mega amped as well as disregard normal cuing.... when I'm a touch more calm then it's easy to cue myself in mentally and execute better technique... I swear if I get too hyped I rush my setup and usually bite myself for skipping something I've done a million times before that I would execute no problem if in a calmer state. Something about being hyped makes me rush and rushing makes me forget what I've already learned the lesson of. Luckily I usually catch myself mentally and tell myself to slow down and take my time, but sometimes you have that amped up moment and bam, then you pay the price.
Mateusz Kieliszkowski could probably win WSM if he got his deadlift up to par with his pressing and foot work. The fact that he was the only one to finish the Iron Bull Pull at Rogue invitational speaks volumes of his potential.
Hey Alex, I want to start incorporating pin press (4sets 4reps) and the slingshot (3sets 5-6reps) 2x a week. I'm at a Plateau right now and seen you recommend these variations, is this a decent program ? Or should I also throw in regular Bench for the first few sets and do around 3sets for all three for both sessions ?
im saying in these strong man competitions , you arent fitting into a weight class, so theres 0 reason to get lean coming into one. if anything that puts you at a disadvantage. @@chrisbfreelance
I think Bobby got stuck in the mindset of what he thought strength meant (deadlift + press) rather than getting good at all the events. Quite a few have been that way over the years. Now though, he's got Loz as a coach, Nathan Payton does his nutrition and he's looking leaner, more efficient, fitter and no less strong on the static stuff. He's still a bit fucked by a weird medical problem that he has with his feet that just screws him on some events. He very rarely mentions it and I can't remember the details but basically his feet / ankles are pretty much locked up.
Luke Stoltman is still decent but he's not one of the contenders for pretty much anything he enters now. It seems like maybe he's tried to trade off his pressing ability to get better at everything else and it hasn't really paid off. He still deserves to be there but we're not far away from seeing him dropped from the big events for them to try out some other athletes.
I wish the sport operated that way, but I don't think it's in their best interest. There's a point where guys get tenure and stay put as gate keepers, never taking last but never a threat to the podium (see: Mark Felix's entire career). One of the things that makes placings predictable is the high likelihood that these guys are consistently mid pack. I've hear a lot of complaints from American pros that there is talent that never gets cycled in.... I'm sure some of that is legit, but I also think a lot of guys on the circuit overestimate how they would do at these shows.
You're probably right, sadly for people like Matt Ragg. With Hafthor and Martins planning to be back next year, and hopefuly Pavlo back from injury, they'll have some tough choices to make and even less chance of new blood scraping in.
His performance was awesome this weekend, he just struggled with his crux. I heard that he's re-learning how to DL properly. So never lose hope in Toffee!
@@Testoodope Yes he is relearning the whole technique. He used to do very little to none leg drive and perfom some kind of still leg deadlift, entirely by his spinal errectors and lats. It's beyond me he got to 400kgs this way, no wonder he screwed his lat by doing this. His pressing is also comming back, he tore his tricep, hed surgery (screwed up by a surgeon), had to redo it and now he is just working back, in terms of strength and confidence his body will hold up. He is still world class in pulling/pushing/loading/throwing events.
