Hey Chuke! I bought a 686-6 last April. I got a Diamond D cross draw for it. I already had a Guide's Choice for my 4.2" 45 Colt/45ACP Redhawk. I use Garrett 420gr hardcast Colt 45 hammerheads for the Redhawk. I love this gun! I flipped a coin between it and a GP100, I believe I would have been just as happy with another ruger, though. Zero recoil with 38s, the S&W plugs the 357s all day long. I was thinking about going to a Hogue rubber grip, as the "plus" grips are so long. Maybe I'll try a shorter Altamont G10. This summer, the black bears were swarming southern Colorado, along the Rio Grande. I alternated taking the two guns out with me fishing, and with some Black Hills 357 honey badgers, I felt just fine with the 686. Thanks for the videos!
@Chuke’s Outdoor Adventures I just purchased that exact revolver yesterday. I found and used, no box and finish could use a little polishing to bring it back to life. But, it was a good price and I’ve been looking for one for quite a long time now. It comes with a black rubber grips so I need to get some nice wood grips like yours. Also need to get a holster for it. Awesome revolver. I am very happy. Thank you for the video.

I also own a 3in.686 and really like it,so far I have only fired 160rounds through it with no problems. I have found my 686to be very accurate, and easy to shoot even with full power magnum loads,as far as the weight for concealed carry with a decent holster, and belt I have had no problem carrying it.

@@Tex_I_Can Oh yeah, I was able to take it home. I'll never let it go seeing as it has no MIM parts and no Hillary hole. Chuke - I have the 4" version of the 7 shot 686 and love it. However I find myself carrying the 3" GP100 Wiley Clapp in AIWB around town stoked with Underwood or Federal 125's. In the woods, I have a 6" 686 in a crossdraw or my 657 3" 41 mag strong side. 357 is super easy to shoot.
I got a 686-3 thats a 6 inch 7 shooter. I like the gun a lot and its probably my favorite one of all. Its my Rick Grimes zombie apocalypse go to gun for sure.
Nice vid. I will be picking up my 3" 686+ in 3-4 days or so. I've owned a 686 in the past and it was very good but was a 6" and not that versatile. I think that this this new one will be the culmination of my "revolver lineup"
I’ve got the same pistol except it’s the “Talo style” unfluted cylinder, absolutely love it! I got it used for $650, thing looked it had never been shot!?! 👍🏻
Did you find any downside to having an unfluted cylinder? I've read where some same a fluted cylinder is easier to grab ahold of when indexing for a reload. I've found myself fond of the unfluted aesthetic as of late and want to grab one.
in communist Ct. we cannot have more than 10 rounds currently (it says "constitution state" on our license plates !) . so 7 full house .357 with a couple speed loaders is pretty solid. plus its a very elegant gun. proud of S&W history here in Ct. and western Mass. ! also, im ready for a chuke Hoodie !
I have 7" 686-6, and a 4" 686-6. The 7" is unfluted, the 4" is fluted. I find the 4" to balance perfectly and it is my favorite pistol. I seem to shoot better double action, than single action, probably a hand placement thing. Next purchase will be a 627 pc N frame 8 shot .357. Thinking of getting a Tucker HF3 for one of the revolvers, just not sure which one yet.
CHUKE....LISTEN...Stealth Gear makes a IWB series of holsters in that blade-tech type polymer for large sized revolvers. I ordered one for my 686 plus and at first I thought no freakin way will I carry that beast but then I actually tried it all day and also carry at about 3 o clock and it's freakin amazing. The key is the holster. People assume revolvers are sucky to carry for comfort but it's the opposite. The thickness in a revolver if carried IWB is the cylinder which is in line with your pants line not on your love handles or hip bones and like you said the grip goes away from your body instead of poking right in like the butt off a semi-auto so there is that natural cant. I'm a big guy and the only firearm I own that I can carry Appendix is a j-frame style revolver or a sucky too small back up type gun like a .380 acp.
3" Stainless 7 shot rounded butt with a bobbed hammer is the perfect combo. I would have no problem with that whatsoever. The only thing that could make it better is if you have another one for a NY reload. 😉
@@Lateralus1007 OK. You'd have to know me, but I laughed at your comment. The thing is I'm in a wheelchair, paralyzed since 1986, and the only cover I'll find is on my bed after bedtime. I have attended a few classes and other than the practical accuracy and weapons handling I just sit there and watch everyone else have fun. Good times no doubt, but not real helpful for someone in my situation. I will say my accuracy is pretty good if I do say so myself. So hopefully I'll be able to put shots on target before they hit me.
I also prefer a revolver. Something about the feel and handling of them that just plays to my soul. I haven’t picked up a 686+ yet, but the 3” is on my short list for certain. I think they are a perfect sized “do it all” pistol.
Been looking at this or the model 69 in 44 magnum for woods carry. Can’t decide between the 44 and 357. Modern ballistics the 357 will work on anything if you put it in the proper spot. 2 extra rounds and can fire fast. Tough choice. Would also use as a ccw.
Just did a walk-in the woods in the Adirondacks, NY. I heard something big, I immediately thought of Chukes Bigfoot ! Had my 10mm but this is also a great option.
Great discussion video Chuke as I have been looking at that exact gun, however wondered if the 3 inch would still work for wilderness purposes for protection and be nicer for CCW with 3 inch, even if it may not be legal for hunting as most states require 4 inch. And 7 shots doesn't hurt. Should be able to shoot any rounds you want in it. Good to hear it is comfortable for EDC and shoot heavy duty rounds in it. Thinking about a fiber on the front sight? Saw one an a Ruger 3 inch Talo edition and it was great for those of us that have older eyes. Thanks again Chuke!
You should look into sending to the S&W performance center for a master revolver action job. You won’t believe it’s the same gun. Guaranteed! They chamfer the charge holes, install a trigger stop and polish the insides to ridiculous smoothness that you’d have to feel to believe.
Balance, YES. Performance - NO. At the price of performance you can have some weight reduction and cooler looks. 4” is what you get if you want the full 357magnum power and 1450fps+ velocities with a 125 grain bullet.
just last week, i picked up the 686+ (the 7 shot) ...i went in the shop fully prepared to get a 3" python i've been drooling over. but i saw the 686 right behind it. i said i didn't see that yesterday. they said it just came in, and they're hard to keep. so i held both. 686 felt better in my hand. i was allowed to dry fire both...and honestly...the 686 in single action, felt smoother and crisper than the python. the 686 holds 7, the python held 6. and on top of that..the 686 was marked $950, and the python $1699 ...so..win..win..win..and win. took it home that day, had speedloaders and holster ordered same day. ...and since it is the 686+ deluxe ...it matches my 629 deluxe 44mag (6") ...it's like they're brothers, and im just the proudest dad.
A 686 in either 4” or 5” is my most likely next handgun purchase (assuming I can’t justify the cost of the TRR8). I really like the looks of the 3” 3-5-7 edition with the unfluted cylinder and would love to have one that’s been tuned by a good gunsmith, but the gun budget is tight and I have a different gun for concealed carry.
I carried a 686 for EDC for a short time, it was more of a classy gun than practical. I carry a Glock 43 now or a Glock 19 and for EDC, more practical not a classy looking gun like the Smith. I used to also carry the S&W 642 with +Ps, that is a great EDC plus dipped into my wheel gun love. To your point the 686 is very great EDC if you don't mind the weight, the 357 magnum has few equals for defensive shooting, plus in a nice leather holster with the right grips it's down right sexy.
I picked up the same gun back 4 months ago, I really like it. I have owned many pistols and this one is way up on the list of favorites. In recommended a friend last night to buy one for his first firearm. I purchased the Talo edition, nice wood grips, I had to change them as the frame was biting my hand under the recoil. It needs an improvement in the front sight, something fiber optic but robust and and a bobbed hammer as I prefer DA as there is no real scenario I'm going to be cocking it in a self defense situation.
I have a no dash with an 11 3/8" barrel my dad left me. It shoots true, but the cylinder is a little loosy goosy not bad, but it's slightly loosy. You have to understand that the 357 Mag ammo back then isn't what it is today. Lets just say contemporary ammo is a little watered down just like 10mm ammo is. I called the Smith and the Wesson company and the girl on the phone said this revolver has a double life time warranty and sent me a box with a return label on it. That means the Smith and Wesson company will warranty this gun and they stand by their word
I should elaborate. Their specification came from Bill Jordan. Chapter 7 of “No Second Place Winner” describes the spec in detail and Herrets met that standard with the Jordan Trooper. The stocks work equally well for speed shooting of defensive loads and for slow fire of heavy loads.
I have the gp100 4” and now I think I will buy that S&W 686 plus 3” and do the hammerless option like yours as I buy guns to carry. I have the sp101 in .357 mag in 3” and it’s perfect for conceal carry but 5 rounds leaves me wanting so I think this gun you are showing is my next bang stick! Question , have you had any issues of rounds binding from being so close in the 7 shot cylinder??
i would use underwood extreme penetraters as much as possibleconsidering the video chuck did a couple of months back he had a lot of trouble with 357 hardcast lead and i believe they were underwood seems liked they have trouble with gewtting the hardness right the extreme penetrater is always dependable
Hell my old model 13-2 is still valid as a self-defense weapon It's obviously not the most efficient choice for self-defense weapon, but it will do the job
Whats the pull weight on the DAO guns? Have you/will you get it tuned up any to reduce it since you don't have a SA option? Love your gun choice vids brother
Is that the stock cylinder release on that revolver? It looks aftermarket. Whatever it is I like it. I'm just wondering if it got changed when the hammer got bobbed.
The 586 and 686 are what killed off the Python. They may not have been as pretty but they were more durable and had better triggers.

just last week, i picked up the 686+ (the 7 shot) ...i went in the shop fully prepared to get a 3" python i've been drooling over. but i saw the 686 right behind it. i said i didn't see that yesterday. they said it just came in, and they're hard to keep. so i held both.
Perfect! Excellent choice!!!
What did you end up getting?
It’s been a few years since that comment, but it was a used Glock 30 I bought from a friend.
@DaddyHawksToyBox I hope that you are enjoying the Glock.
Nice revolver Chuke.
Used to own one. Sold to a friend who didn’t own any pews at all.
"constitution state" -- both funny and sad
I picked up the same gun back 4 months ago, I really like it. I have owned many pistols and this one is way up on the list of favorites. In recommended a friend last night to buy one for his first firearm. I purchased the Talo edition, nice wood grips, I had to change them as the frame was biting my hand under the recoil. It needs an improvement in the front sight, something fiber optic but robust and and a bobbed hammer as I prefer DA as there is no real scenario I'm going to be cocking it in a self defense situation.
Awesome! I agree about the bobbed hammer too!
I would love one. Prices are just crazy now. Carrying a ruger gp100 in the woods for black bear defense but it is a six inch and sucks to carry.
Buying one TODAY
semi for the hood, revolver for the woods
Altamont stocks are nice, but you should try Herretts Stocks Jordan Troopers.
Do you remember the title of the vid? What problem was he having with the hardcast?
Cool !
Chuck. Hope you doing well. Do you mind posting all the specs for that holster? It will fit perfect my 686+ 3in Magnum Series. Thanks
Hell my old model 13-2 is still valid as a self-defense weapon
It's obviously not the most efficient choice for self-defense weapon, but it will do the job
Best revolver ever!
Whats the pull weight on the DAO guns? Have you/will you get it tuned up any to reduce it since you don't have a SA option? Love your gun choice vids brother
Wheres the chukes outdoor coffee mugs forsale?
Collectors Piece's Do Not have Hillary Holes. Sorry to be the One to break that to You... Great Video, all the same. 👍
It doesn't always "go boom" if you short stroke it.
Is that the stock cylinder release on that revolver? It looks aftermarket. Whatever it is I like it. I'm just wondering if it got changed when the hammer got bobbed.
The 3" 686+ comes with a fluted cylinder as shown in the video or an unfluted cylinder.
Very nice ! Subscribed.
I'm a big guy, so my 686+ 4 inch is my pocket carry.
Nice 👍
@@ChukesOutdoorAdventures Chuke...... I think I love you like a little older brother!!!
What kind of holster you carry and where do you buy it from thank you
Which Altamont grips are those? I like the fact that there are no finger grooves.
Not sure which ones I got them used!
I believe those are the Altai grips.
Love the 686 but the PC version is the way to go.
If you get a malfunction , look under the star for ANY bits that should not be there . A tiny bit of cloth or paper under there will make it fail .
I checked the just incase holsters web sight and couldn’t find the iwb holster you have?
Hmm maybe message him!
A little newer? It's the newest variant
Love mine
What holster is that looks great ?
Yep, it's a great revolver.
That case would be either .357 mag or 38 special
357 for sure!
What cylinder release is that? Is it aftermarket?
Yeah it’s a Dan Wesson…
I have looked for it, you wouldn't happen to have a link to it would you?
