- The plaintiff used to be best friends with the defendant. He booked them a trip to Miami for spring break, but he claims the defendant backed out at the last minute. The plaintiff had to pay a lot in cancellation fees, so he’s suing. The defendant argues he told the plaintiff he couldn’t go on the trip, but the plaintiff booked the trip anyway.

I understand that booking a group trip upfront can be more cost-effective; however, if other people do not pay their portion, it becomes more expensive or canceled. It's better to book the trip as if you were going alone and invite others to partake in group activities once you are already there.

This is exactly why it's always better to gather the money BEFORE booking. There's always "that one guy" that drags his feet or backs out, has "issues with the bank", etc. Always.

That's why I don't pay ahead and I don't pay for anyone. When it comes to these group trips everybody pays their own way.

This was a wholesome case. I’m sure the guy really wanted to go and was really hoping he could get the days off. But he was responsible enough to remain employed.
I’m glad the young man got his money back for trying to look out for his homie.
This is why I never wanted to share the price of a trip with someone, even when I wasn't making a lot of money. Also, most times I don't want the company of others while I'll on vacation. I'd rather take a vacation alone. 😀

It's disheartening, but the plaintiff's victory was due to clear evidence that the defendant gave him the go-ahead to make the reservation, only to later bail and refuse to pay the cancellation fee. The entire case hinged on whether the defendant had indeed authorized the plaintiff to make the reservations. Despite the defendant's claim that he never gave permission due to not being able to get time off work, his texts proved otherwise. In my view, to avoid such conflicts, it's crucial to have not just verbal agreements but also written documentation, whether through text or email. This is especially important when plans involve monetary payments, as it can prevent misunderstandings and preserve friendships by clearly defining who is responsible for payments.
