    I just got a rain cape, and we rode for a day of rain on the GAP. I loved it, kept me dry, but I didn't overheat. I always feel the same about packing for a trip. I try to lay out items by function: sleep, eat, ride. I like my camp chair too.

      We ended up having near perfect weather so I didn't even bring it on our bike camping part of the trip....so I'm still interested to see how mine will work.
      Cheers!

    Your videos are like chicken soup for the biking soul, man. When I can’t ride myself, I don’t always want to learn something new sometimes I just want to live vicariously and enjoy the side/background zen.

    I love my cape for bike touring. 1 pretty packable item keeps you completely dry on and off the bike (assuming your bike has fenders). Still gives you some air-flow while riding too. It can feel like a sail adding resistance but I only feel that around 15-20mph so not often when touring. Mine kept me completely dry for 77 miles of hard rain on my last big tour, had dry feet for 55miles too! Enjoy!

      We ended up having perfect weather so I didn't even bring it on the bike camping part of the trip - will have to wait to post about my experience until I need to use it.

    The good thing that you can pack up anything you need since you're taking a car, not like me that I need to fit everything on a bike when traveling. Have fun and looking forward seeing trip videos 👍

    My whole adult life of bike touring, the past 60 years I have lived the life style of a nomad bring everything I will need for a 365 day trip through all weather from minus 10F to 120 F. My whole I have only had one bike at at time. It has to meet all the challenges for all types of weather and surfaces to bike on. My clothing is layered to work in all conditions fish net under layer, poly pro ventilation fishing shirt, Long sleeve linen shit, wool mid 17:43 ayer. Alpaca hoodie, wind jacket, rain jacket. Head cover: buff, flat cap, wool cap with ear protection. Feet:Hiking Sandals les with toe cover, alpaca mid weight socks, Bottoms: Knickers with nicker socks. Emergency multi layer: Ninja suite: wool top and bottom base layer, balaclava, mid weight alpaca socks. Bed: Modular Sleep System. Kitchen. Stove, pot, kettle. The greatest number of deaths from hyperthermia occurs in the Spring and Summer months. I’m always ready for the unexpected.

    If you want to vary your OCA tour next time you're here, you can turn left into Ossining (if you're headed north) and take a ferry across the Hudson to Haverstraw, then ride the gravel / dirt road Nyack-Haverstraw trail back to Nyack, then across the Tappan Zee Bridge path (yeah, don't call it the Cuomo Bridge. :), and head back to the OCA from there. It's a beautiful ride.
    I think the ferry runs through this coming weekend, then it closes for the season.

    • @TimFitzwater
      @TimFitzwater  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I will have to look into that for future trips - because we loved the OCA again and will definitely be back! Thanks!

    • @TimFitzwater
      @TimFitzwater  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have some light flip flops by Zero Shoes - but I didn't bring them on this trip with the chilly nights.
      I did bring my Vans slip ons for the car part of the trip but went with just my Old Schools for the bikepacking. It worked out fine as only one night was cold when we rode a bit after dark.

    Hope you have a great time! I know I asked about the bike interviews, but I can see how they'd be a buzzkill or just not something you even think about since this is a trip to have fun, not work. So I rescind my request for interviews! If you ever have someone chomping at the bit to have a sit down with you to show off what they've done for their bike, cool, otherwise, it's just not worth the hassle, IMO.

    Making interval notes as I watch. Croton Point park may be a little dicey at night, I used to flyfish off there , well ok, fine. Godspeed! I'm sure you are well aware that CT now has a fire ban in all state parks. No smoking , even. Lamentation Mountain, Berlin, CT, about 8 miles from my lazy ass here, has been burning for days. Great Google pics! 13 fires going throughout the state. I rode to Maine and back this timeframe in 2015. We dipped into the 30's. The FROST kicked my ass. Previous to that, I had a Coleman Sportcat propane heater , and it was amazing and lightweight, even. But they discontinued it . I now have a "Little Buddy" Mr. Heater which is around the same BTU, and will work just fine . Obviously vent yer tent coherently. I went down to 29 degrees in the Catskills with it , I could hang out in a T-shirt. Just don't burn your sleeping bag on it. Be coherent. Put it inside a pot or something. I even left it on all night and I didn't die.

      @TimFitzwater  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yup / no fires at Nutmeg. Made it to Long Island campsite and was too late for one anyways. I just slept with my long wool on everywhere. I have a down jacket too. All good.
