I agree that as a cycling community, we should be as one. road cyclists should support mountain bikers, who should support trials bikers, who should support gravel riders, who should support BMX riders, who should support bikepackers, who should support bicycle tourists, and so on. When road cyclists need more bike lanes, we all should support the effort, Same when mountain bikes need more mountain biking trails, same as when jump bike riders need a pump track, and so on. As a unified group, we can get a lot more done, that would benefit everyone.

The part that resonated most here was the section on cycling culture. “We are one”. Let’s not fragment and get snobby.
Bikes as consumer products is a tricky one. A new frame arrived today. But I’m going to build a bike for at least the next 10 years. We want great well designed durable products. But we don’t have to buy into a yearly upgrade cycle.
If we do,then selling on our well loved less used bikes is a great way of extending their lives and letting others join the sport in a low impact way
PS my wifes Trek 920 from 1994 is still in the shed. But just 31 years expects a new bike this year 😂

I feel the greatest animosity comes towards those who enjoy riding fast. In the past 15 years I have heard so many people center my enjoyment on the bike with “I just ride to have fun”. So do I. But I also love going fast and racing (even though I’m not that fast). You can ride fast, have fun, enjoy exploring, and take in views all at the same time.

One of your best video, I unsubscribed from a lot of bicycles related channels because I was burned by consumerism, new product push and all that stuffs. Hearing you talk about it is comforting. You are a great source of inspiration and I pedalled further than ever thanks to your reviews and feedbacks, on this channel and the website. Happy new year 🎉

Word is that West Virginia has a brand new 345 mile (?) bikepacking route that is almost finalized. The north-south route looks absolutely amazing. It traverses a lot of preexisting routes in the area... juat sort of strings together the different sectiins.
I hope it finds its way to your website, though it looks like a local group might be trying to set up their own website specifically for it.

Appears my attempt to get you that info was nixed by TH-cam. Apparently they dont links, even when you spell them out to avoid them getting autodeleted. The comment might be stuck in the folder for comments that have to get manually reviewed (because youtube thought it was spam).
Tried to find an actual email address on bikepacks website to just relay it that way but only see your instagram. Will see if you have a Facebook account.

Lovely thoughts at the end! I'm finding myself in that vein lately. ALL bikes and bike rides are the best. Short or long - it doesn't matter. I've seen this extend into the newer social media platforms as well. There's just better and more acceptance of the way people ride bikes. It sure is nice to see.

    Sizing:
Trek got this right for years with their in-between sizing. I could see something like a common frame size for Medium and Medium+, for example, where the standard gets downsized sizing components (45mm stem, 760mm bars, 172.5mm cranks, 150mm dropper length, etc), and + variants get upsized sizing components (55mm stem, 780mm bars, 175mm cranks, 175mm dropper length, etc)...something like that. Keeps the frame SKU order volume up, keeping costs where they are, while also achieving mid sizing out of the box. Just one idea.

I used to work in a shop here in Cleveland and the snobby elitism was part of the reason I left. They eventually got bought out by another shop in the area that caters to that crowd and I refuse to shop there for that reason. Especially being younger, the amount of middle aged dudes who think they know everything and get the most expensive stuff is a big reason people are turned away from cycling. The bikepacking community and the community y’all have built here is definitely a lot less toxic but yea I think if we want more people riding we need to stop with the elitism and labeling and try to make it as accessible of an activity for as many people as possible. Like I’m not huge on e bikes but if it gets people outside and riding then I’m fine with it

I love your channel. I have just built a steel bikepacking bike with burley cargo trailer for my dog. Nearly got my gear together. But wow, I would love to come over to the US and ride something like the PCT and meet so many like minded people. I did have a tough time at the beginning of this video though. I own several bicycles including a full carbon full suspension mountain bike, a custom made steel 29er, a vey high end steel road bike with full campagnolo record stuff and many more. Currently my favorite and most ridden bike is a 1995 Specialized Stumjumper built with a rigid fork, 3x drivetrain, long stem, very narrow flat handlebar and bar ends. Is it the best bike? Not it's not but it's the most fun.

Thanks Neil. Very thoughtful comments. The culture issues also apply to eBikes - but even dyed in the wool roadies are realising what fun they can be and also how they get people out on bikes here in the UK and particularly in Europe who might otherwise not ride or use their cars. Keep up the good work in 2025.

The push to aluminum is easy. You can robot weld easy steel not so much because of the puddle size.. The bike industry like all others is about profits. Back when pros switched from steel to aluminum on top end road bikes it was also when aluminum was at record low prices is what most people missed.
Trust me I like the stuff but it is being pushed for a reason and reason is always the same.
I am one of those riders that rides older stuff still for fun. That old canti cx bike makes old trails new and fun. I have modern stuff also but I find modern drop bar bikes that are super slack and bb drops to China is a crutch and pretty darn boring

It is my belief that bikes are designed for optimum performance centered around a size medium geometry and that you may get reasonable performance going up or down one size, but beyond that the bike's geometry has changed so much that they no longer perform anything as intended.
I believe a solution would be to match wheel size to frame size using smaller wheels on smaller frames and larger wheels on larger frames to keep the geometry the same for all size bikes

    • @Boss-dr2zk
      @Boss-dr2zk 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

Going down in wheel sizes from 622 would be fairly easy, yes, with 584, 559 and 507. But going up? There are wheels called 32" and 36", but they're veeery uncommon. And it would also require component manufacturers to create more different products, for example forks, but also drivetrains, as larger wheels result in harder gears and smaller wheels in easier gears. That would make exchanging parts way more difficult, as shops would have to carry much more stuff.
But I def get your idea, small frames are very compromissd sometimes and could greatly benefit from 559 wheels instead of 622

all industries are of course different but the US bike industry has and will continue to price match Chinese tariffs. Doesn't matter whats happening on their end for costs/profit they will price match the tariffs. Quality wont go up, more people wont be employed they will just price match. They'll also price match if the tariffs go down.

As others have posted, I firmly believe cycling is a community that is inclusive for everyone on a bike. Sadly, it's a bit depressing the number of cyclists that cannot or will not acknowledge other cyclists when on a ride. Not to pigeon-hole any one specific sub-group however, I find some roadies are the worst offenders. I've encountered roadies at a stop light that are totally dismissive and ignore a "hello/hey" greeting from me. I'm pretty sure we're all engaged in the same activity...
Oh well, sucks to go through life that uptight and taking one's self way too serious.
Thanks for the video, sir 🍻

    Bike industry doom and gloom:
They did it to themselves in a lot of ways too, by selling niche and high maintenance race bikes to families who just want to go for a ride with their kids. Bike Farmer is the leading voice on this, and he's absolutely right. Large manufacturers force neighborhood shops to carry flagship models that don't sell, and we wonder why the LBS is having such a tough go. And if the LBS has it tough, the manufacturers have it tough.
And yes, Covid supply chain issues, but they are just the straw that broke the camel's back. The rot is deep and long lived in the industry.
The good news? The dumpster fire the industry is going through will burn away the dead and rotting parts of the industry, the everyperson will come back. Will the industry be humble enough to learn their lesson? Time will tell. But families, simple bikes, and a service focus are where it's at going forward, while the niche will find its place in online spaces.

Talking shit is fun, but it can go too far. Be the change you wish to see in the world. It starts with each of us! Rib each other, but do it with love. bike snobbery is a thing… Cycling has gotten too fucking expensive. What a surprise to find out swift is in trouble $300 for a fucking nylon bag to put shit in personally I ride a single speed cross check that’s 15 years old, single speed the less you have the greater the experience… When I see surly discontinue the cross check and come out with the stegosaurus moon lander … it’s very very disheartening. Accompany that started with bikes like the karate monkey that you could put used parts on and build up any way you wanted that is the direction the bike industry needs to go not more shit to break more batteries to be dead with regards to e-bikes, nope …. They’ve actually ruined some of the trails in my area. They ride too fast and out of control… OK time for me to go back into my Hermitage and get on my cushion. 🧎🏻‍➡️ one mind one gear, one world… And a one hit.😊
