  • Upgrades to the internals of the upcoming Alienation Venus freecoaster hub! This hub utilizes the Free Night Planetary clutch assembly in order to be a cassette when moving forward and a freecoaster while moving backward without having to disengage or reengage the hub!
    I have an entire playlist devoted to videos testing the original Free Night Planetary freecoaster as well as comparing it to other freecoasters.
    Playlist here - • Game Changing Freecoas...
    The Planetary coaster was an absolute game changer and to have a company I ride for making their own version of it that I got to help out with is so amazing! I hope you guys are as stoked about this one as I am!!

    It's incredibly impressive that a tiny company was able to design, prototype, and bring this product to market. Miraculous is probably a better word. Kudos to the Free Night team, and also thanks to this channel for diving into the details of how these hubs work. 👍

    Very interested in these Hubs! Due to my disabilities riding a Coaster is more of a hindrance than a help. These Hubs are bonkers & I love that I wouldn't have to worry about foot placement & slack when fakie, this is something I'm definitely considering!

    They might spin smoother due to less deflection causing less friction and could also be down to material. Some materials can be considered self lubricating like certain Teflon materials used in bushings.

    Yeah it's decided. For my more normal next build and my temp builds wheel set. Probably profiles for front and cassette and the polished venus for the coaster. All laced to chrome vandals.
    For the uber light wheel set. Far east cycles front hub probably a tree rear and the lightest shell plus best internals combo of the available planetary designs. So probably gonna get all 3. All laced to eclat carbonic rims. Butted spokes alloy nipples for all 6 wheels. Maybe 6 ti spokes per wheel in pairs of 2 for the propeller look.
    If I'm not mistaken I think the freenight has the lightest shell and a few other bits. But has weaker internals not that it seems to be an issue. Lighter shell better internals and lightest cone nuts plus swapping in a ti qxle and driver plus lighter axle nuts should help get the hub lighter but more reliable and basically as strong as the others for my needs but at the lowest possible weight.
    Plus with a tree hub if I swap the center axle to ti and the driver as well as bolts I should be able to get it to 10 ounces flat. Combo with the front hub and 1 pound all in on hubs. 1.25 for hubs with the coaster.
    Should have 2 of the strongest lightest wheelsets available.

      It’s been suggested a million times. It can’t happen without total redesign of the internals

    • @Hagalazia
      @Hagalazia 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Brant_Moore Actualy, no. Not necessary to redesign internals. BSD Revolution with custom made female axle and ti bolt is 352 gr instead 523 with standard steel male axle. Idk how to add links for pictures, youtube deletes them.

      Send it on Instagram! Same as my TH-cam name.
      The thing is that they would want to have 14mm female bolts rather than 3/8”. 3/8” is definitely possible with the current setup

    Hey i know this comment is very late but do you think at a later stage these hubs will come with more pawls and the jaggies on the outer shell with more engagement points? I mean it probably wouldn't do anything but imagine this hub but it sounds like a profile elite

    • @Brant_Moore
      @Brant_Moore  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be possible but I don't know if there would be enough room for the triangle piece to rotate enough with more pawls. I could see 4 being possible, but It's hard to say

      We actually tested a ratchet ring with more teeth, it does sound different and engages a bit faster but makes the moonwalk more difficult haha. it will be used on our MTB hubs.

  • @thomas930409

    Isn't the planetary implementation as a freecoaster horribly dangerous? If the pawls are even slightly gripping, then they won't drop back down to let the hub go backwards. I think taking away the springs from under the pawls(this is what planetary freecoaster by design does) is so unreliable and dangerous!
    I don't think you would agree with me openly in this comment section because of your sponsorship, but I still want to sound by thoughts and worries. I still have a couple months before I chose a freecoaster design and buy from whoever brand that uses the said design, but the traditional one with the screw in driver, tension ball springs and sliding clutch looks the most reliable and simple. Blown up bearings might become an issue...
    Is planetary really the next step or is it just a different one with different problems and things to worry about?

    • @Brant_Moore
      @Brant_Moore  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’ve been riding planetary coasters for 2 years now and have had 3 different ones. I’ve had none of the scares that come with normal clutch Freecoasters. Accidental engagement can be a killer when moving fast and is a problem that just doesn’t exist with the planetary coasters.
      There’s also the absence of a pedal gap/slack to get rid of when pedaling forward which exists in normal coasters. This is something that can definitely lead to some oh shit moments.
      There have been rare issues with engagement but those are due to o ring failure and are very rare. In the category of freak things that any part has.
      Ultimately I truly believe they are the future and a lot of other companies do too as they’re licensing and working in their own.
      The other problem with the conventional clutch is that most of them use plastic inside that wears and causes the entire wheel to wobble. Shouldn’t ever be an issue with the planetary hubs.

    • @bmxriderforlife1234
      @bmxriderforlife1234 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As someone who's been following unique coaster designs and boutique and rare designs and rare examples with various attempts at fixing issues with the free coaster design.
      I see this as the next big thing. Machining flaws could cause issues you mention but it's unlikely to be any worse then issues found in cassette hubs that use press fit collars and the wobble people get with those. Ie maybe a few bad hubs or a first batch.
      It's a better design then the G coaster that never released. It's cheaper and lighter then a profile z coaster and has other advantages.
      Only con to the design I see so far is they don't seem to roll as smooth or as fast as some more traditional designs. But that can be said for any sealed coaster set up over the original gold standard the nankai hub and much easier cheaper and stronger then the previous boutique options like the syn hubs from Japan or weird stuff like the prototype chosen designs that sesshin was trying to release.
      Better then the stolen hub. Better then the Ezra or eclat style coasters.
      So far seems to be the best of the new systems. But a few systems for similar set ups exist. Pretty sure far east cycles has their own similar concept but slightly different in concept.
      If you don't mind slack and you want reliability and functionality. Find an old nankai bamboo hub with 14mm axle. Might require mixing and matching hub bits but get the right one and they're the smoothest hubs available and rebuilding them is easy bearings are easy to source and can be upgraded to whatever quality you want. You can build with or without bearing races. Pros and cones to each. Axles are cheaper design.
      Khe style coasters which are just a sealed bearing version of coaster brake modded coasters have issues with the axle strength. Odyssey design has its own issues. So do all the other mods based on that system.
      Most other boutique or alternative coaster designs are even worse for machining tolerance issues. Or have worse functionality or reliability and just as reduced strength or worse. Why none have been widely adapted. This one already has 2 rather decent brands on the train and likely others to come.
      And that's from a small Israeli shop that started a brand. Vs the larger already established brands. Including some that made large amounts of money off very little initial investment. Like khe. And yet none have come close.
      Even my own design which accounted for issues and avoided problems due to me knowing about all the other designs isn't as reliable and has a part that equals the driver bearings and clutch weak points in previous designs. Except this time it's an expanding wedge for the drive system that slowly rips itself apart by expanding into a hub shell that's much harder then itself. And still ends up with a design that has some slack or sponge to the pedal crank. Only advantage mine would have is pedal pressure for fakie tricks would be able to be used like a coaster brake but with variable pressure. But also speeds up the hub eating itself alive.
      Vs fixing the issue of the expanding system by swapping materials and modding it slightly I'd just license the freenight design and try and reduce some friction and help reduce rolling resistances so it rolls faster and longer.
      It's ironically the least complicated of the alternative set ups. Also why it likely hasnt been tried before is its kind of oxymoronic in nature.

      To add to the concern in this comment, I’ve recently purchased and ran this hub and have had problems with the engagement system triggering when hopping in fakie which I something I haven’t even experienced in traditional freecoaster hubs that I’ve run. Currently disassembly the hub to determine if there’s O ring failure but I’ve literally had the hub for only 2 days and so far have been a little disappointed in the performance. Might be switching back to a clutch soon but hopefully this is something minor.

    • @bmxriderforlife1234
      @bmxriderforlife1234 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johhnymancinni791 you do realize you have to break the hub in before being able to do fakies on them correct.
      I'm gonna guess not.
      Go ride the hub around forwards. Just pedaling. Try and avoid anything too stressful on the drive mechanism for the first little bit.
      Once its broken in there's no issues with fakies.
      Haven't ordered either of mine yet. Deciding between the bsd and colony ones. And getting rhe alienation version in polished.
      Weight weenie build and a looks first build. Well beyond functionality.
      My buddy got his bsd version. Didn't let it break in either. Was having issues. Really break the thing in. And make sure a) there isn't loose cones or any other issues. B) make sure your chain isn't too tight. C) make sure it's actually broken in and if so then possible machining flaw. It happens.
      I could probably make g sport odyssey and Sunday look very bad in your eyes. Lol don't ask. Ironically for their reputation seen more issues with their parts then any other brand. Including a few with the clutch hub.
      There's a dude in my city who had one before brant did. His is the og freenight one. Still rolls fine. Pretty sure all he's done is change bearings maybe and the o ring stuff to the new set up.
      Learning curves. They exist.

      @Brant_Moore  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The same way you had to get used to a traditional Freecoaster, you have to get used to a planetary coaster. If your wheel isn’t rotating when you land fakie, there’s a greater chance of engaging. Watch my final review. The system is amazing but has its quirks just like anything else
