    Plato’s words are as relevant now as they were during his time. He is still one of the world’s greatest teachers.

      It's so crazy how, words spoken so long ago can have a profound impact and still be relevant.

      @@Everydaystoic That's because human nature has fundamentally not changed. We tend to measure progress purely in terms of advances in science and technology, but when you listen to Plato's words and realise their relevance today, you come to the sad conclusion that no real progress has been made in the last 2500 years.

    Many of these thoughts are actually from his teacher Sokrates (Σωκράτης) who never wrote anything himself. Besides his brilliant mind we also have to thank Plato for the wisdom he transcended to the world by revealing the brilliance of his teacher. Arguably these 4 people are the most important individuals in human history and were all teachers and students except for Sokrates.

    Platonic idealism is a major school of metaphysics, and their key idea is that of the logos - there is an intellectual/rational order to the world that's transcendent (independent of time and place) and that underlies everything in the universe.
    Thinkers like Newton, Einstein, and Werner Heisenberg and others saw this as a good framework to understand the laws of physics and the mathematical order of the world discovered by science.

      what are the main differences?

    • @hayden3774
      @hayden3774 4 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      @@SERGE_Tech You can subscribe to both schools of thought, but the main differences are that Platonism is a way to look at life, and Stoicism is a way to live life. Platonism deals with abstraction and idealism; believing that thoughts and ideas encapsulate physical things. I.e.; a tree exists because we know it does and can conceptualize what a "tree" is in our thoughts. This is opposed to Artistotle (a student of Plato) and his realist philosophy in that he believes that a tree exists on its own wether we conceptualize it or not. Artistotle is thought to be the origin of the scientific method.
      Stoicism has really nothing to do with wondering about the nature of the universe. All its concerned with is logical mastery of ones own emotional state by interpretation of perception.

      @@hayden3774 Plato is very broad and he deals things including metaphysics but also psychology, politics and personal ethics as in The Republic, and his ethics are very close to the stoics' (the stoics see themselves as proponents of Plato).
      Platonic idealism remains a major school of metaphysics, and the idea is also that there is an intellectual/rational order that's independent of time and place and that underlies everything in the universe
      (Which Newton, Einstein, and Werner Heisenberg etc see as being the laws of physics and the mathematical order of the world discovered by science)
