- Today I'll show you how to make a DIY concrete fire pit using a couple of plastic bowls, some concrete, and a gel fire canister. This is a super easy and simple build, a perfect project for any experience level

MODERN BUILDS
With concrete, the more water you add, the weaker the final product becomes. This obviously does not require great strength, but you also don't want it to crack. If you mix the concrete in a 5 gallon bucket, for 10-15 minutes, you will end up with a creamier consistency.
Lastly, concrete needs to be moist cured for a week as it takes 30 days for concrete to become fully cured The easiest way to do it would be to wet it after you pop it out of the mold (awesome trick btw), then wrap it in plastic wrap, or something like that, for a week, or at least a couple days for a project like this.

Cool video. You can also sprinkle epsom salt on top to get a prettier flame. And if you don't want to buy the gel, hand sanitizer doubles as gel and burns just as well.
You could also mix in some dye in to the concrete mix for a different color after drying.

Tiki torch fuel is a good point. Tiki torches can be super cheap, I get them just for the cans, because they work great, too, and they hold more fuel...If I’m lazy, then any planter works. Some people add them to the center of larger pots, with low plants around the edges, just don’t add them to any with dirt that has peat moss in it, it’s very flammable. Lots of potting soil does have peat moss.
Thank you for the tip about the tiki fuel! I've looked at a few different diy fire bowls and they all say to use the canned heat. I was very frustrated because I can't even SEE a flame on them, thought I was doing something wrong or got duds. Two 2-packs later (and about $15) I found your video. Awesome, THANKS!

I don't know what "tiki fuel" actually is. Great video. You can use a palm sander (without paper) to vibrate against the bowl to get rid of the bubbles and make for a glassier outcome.
That's a neat trick with the air compressor!

That last tip was very helpful. The tiki torch liquid .. I don't like a low blue flame. I see it in other videos & it's barely noticeable
A jellified alcohol solution also does a great job because once the vapors start to burn when the alcohol heats up, and the fire spreads out a bit more :)

I had the gel fuel cans at first, but it gets VERY expensive. So now I buy 91% alcohol and get a beautiful larger flame. Love the video!

Hi Mike, I built a bowl and your instructions were great. I had good luck with baby oil on the bowls. I have read that river stones or glass beads can blow up, so now I am nervous to use them. Does mortar give you a smoother finish rather then quick cement? How to you end the flame when you are done? Do you have to disassemble the stones and put the lid on the can? Thanks, Sherri

Looks great..do the rocks get hot with the flame canisters? I heard some rocks can explode if heated?

Hey Mike, I was wondering would you be able to purposely make a concrete mix with lots of bubbles then use epoxy to fill them in once the concrete has dried? I think that'd look pretty dope, you could get a marbling effect from it.
PS cool videos - definitely trying some of these out when I get some better tools.

I keep reading on these DIY tutorials that river rock can explode when exposed to high heat, so wouldn't it be best to use a heatproof rock?

you are not curing the concrete , after removing bowl, it's a good idea to soak in tub of water for 3-7 days. Makes it MUCH stronger in the long run. Also, you are adding too much water to mix.

Just cover it with some pot/saucepan cover for couple of minutes. It will prevent of accessing fresh air (with oxygen) and burning will stop.

How do you extinguish the fire?
brush the plastic bowls with any cheap motor oil before pouring the cement mix so it doesnt stick to the bowls

it was NOT a great tutorial. He left out a bunch of stuff . The curing of the concrete in particular. This bowl he made will crack eventually. Too much water and didn't let it cure in water

Love it. I don't have an air compressor. How should I remove without causing a problem. Also, fill canister with tiki torch fluid?? After the original fluid is gone? Didn't understand....

I've used the canned compressed "duster" air for cleaning keyboards and it's worked. You just take out the wick and use a funnel to fill the container with traditional tiki torch fluid for a larger flame

When you put the sterno in the the 🔥 pit, are you mixing the tiki fuel equal parts or are you using just tiki fuel after the ethanol chafing runs out bc obviously the chafing fuel is nearly invisible?

Definitely yes. Use quikrete
Does the concrete bowl itself get hot? If it was to be set on top of a glass table do you think it would shatter the glass?
The bowl hasn't ever gotten hot on me. All the heat really come from the top, so I don't think there'd be an issue
okay so the gel pack might not work for this idea, but could I make an actual firepit out of concrete or is that dangerous?

the middle bowl will be the hardest, use a flat head screw driver and peel it back. it will come right off. also use non stick before doing the project and the bottom should come right out when you flip it over. ( currently doing the project) lol

Of course and that's what I will do. Lots to choose from at say Home Depot, etc. if you don't already have something.
