I did submit that idea for AGDQ 2015 but that got rejected. You would need at least 8 DS capture devices for 8-player and players would have to deal with possible wireless play lag too.

[RS] LegionOfBaum31 Mario Kart Wii (and the Wii in general) only has four way local multiplayer, and all of the Wii's online multiplayer servers have been down for some time now.
The CPU racers during this run are probably thinking “We’re never inviting ROB again”

I like how he called out the change in the Red Shell AI. In DS onward, Red Shells will attempt to hit you from the side, _specifically_ if you have a Held Item behind you. Additionally, in Double Dash, a Red Shell would retarget the next player in line if it missed (not that it matters when you're in 1st), but DS Red Shells are out for one specific racer's blood, and they will get it.
Actually, funny story. I was playing MKDS one time and I think I was on wario stadium...I don't remember I just remember the the place I accidentally slowed down at. So what happened was that a red shell was after me and I'm just like "fuck I'm gonna be last" and so I dropped off the ramp and the red shell went over me and I was just like "wut" and then I got first. DS red shells are smart from time to time, but mostly dumb.
Sometimes it helps to quickly turn towards the side that the red shell is aiming for just before it hits you, so then it can hit the item you’re holding, or you can turn really sharply against the red shell’s trajectory (but I personally find that move to be very risky and doesn’t always work).
Not sure about Mario Kart Wii red shells (can break easily) though they can hit you on the side.
But for MK7 and MK8 red shells, yeah. They are our for blood.
the last Mario Kart game to have mini turbos performed by just turning left and right while drifting.
And to have lives in balloon battle rather than just respawning.
How do the new games do it

I remember grinding a long time to get 3 stars on every course just to look good online. Everyone played online versus like this, was such a fun game to play against others back in the day.

Played this game so much when I was a kid. I remember accidentally discovering blue shell dodge. It felt amazing. Crazy to see the runner pull it off so easily.

I do remember playing this and dodging blue shells and I got to say that is one of the best feelings ever! You felt like a complete badass when you did it successfully.

I used to play time trials ages ago, I got top 10 on figure 8 at one stage. By the end of one stage my thumb was on fire, I can't fathom snaking every map back to back.

So, funny story, one time i somehow managed to get a blue shell in first place, and I wanted to see what happened. You can guess what happened.
After all the times they said "hate to see it" I laughed at 57:30 "glad to see it"
Babby park is one of my favorite tracks
Totally get why he doesn't like the baby mario course. As a track it incredibly basic - but as a Mario Kart track it can be pretty fun because all the racers are always really close together, so it's like a big violent derby with items going off everywhere and people ramming into each other. It's just becomes a mess and I kinda love it (and it lasts a lot longer if you're playing on GC where it has more laps, I think :P).
That said, this was an awesome and very entertaining run!~ ♥

Btw that cheap cheap beach time is very good first try even in you HAVE a mushroom. Legend
on the desert hill course you could probably make a better course time if you were to hold back for just a second at the start and grab a box when you are about in 6th or 7th place and odds are you will got 3 mushrooms, and could use one on each lap to jump the hills there on the S turns towards the end of the lap. if you can do that all 3 laps (hope that lightening doesnt get you) it should make a pretty good difference.
4:30 in this track i remember you could use the rainbow ramp as a mushroom activator for super snake by miniboosting on the edge of it, it allows you to ignore the water and get a perfect curve. Im not familiar with mkds speedrunning, is this still used or forgotten? I remember this from at least 10 years ago so this might be wrong

I am in a comfortable position to say that if i start playing mario kart again in a ds console for 20 days 6 hours per day, i will be able to stand at a similar level to this. 5 of the first days will have to be spent perfecting power boost and evading blue shell at a decent rate (ive done this, but never reached a good consistency)
And yes, yoshi egg1 is the best overall for a speedrun like this
I agree to all tactics and thing said. However i got a question: which kart parameter affects off road inside the proper course limits (road, sea, dirtroad)?
I know as a fact that handling allows you to keep drifting while in dirt-grass. Toads kart and robs kart have the minimum handling required. As well as that an high acceleration lowers speed and drifting speed loss from dirt and grass found next to the course line.
This speedrun reminds me my childhood, when i quickly found out snaking as my last resort countermeasure to defeat nintendo ghost time trials.

Baby Mario and Luigi World is a great map on Double Dash as you get the driver unique items, picking Double babies and getting Chain Chomps flying across the map was so much fun.
