I started medical school as a graduate at 23 and I was so worried about being behind my friends and other people my age but I seen someone say “you’re going to be 28 anyway, you may as well be 28 with a medical degree” and it shifted my perspective completely
My husband and I both lost our jobs the year we got married. I decided to go back to school, not even remotely thinking about medicine. It came about organically. Asking my husband for his support of me not working for 6+ years was hard, but the conversation came down to "do you want to be 40 and married to an office manager or do you want to be 40 and married to a doctor?" I'll be 34 if/when I matriculate 🤷🏽♀️ life is too precious to waste worrying about if you are too old
Graduated with my first bachelor degree at 23 years old. Work full time (and still am), and come back to school to continue my professional study at age 27. second all your points. Learning is a life long journey. 💪🏻
Starting med school as a graduate this year at 25 can defo relate to the feeling behind in life but I think your point about how life experiences will prepare you for the stresses in the course is spot on. Although I'm starting a little later than i would've liked, I feel that I'm so much more prepared than I would have been at 18/19. Great vid!
@Tom Harris It's going well so far. I'm starting my third year shortly, and I look forward it. If you go to a US MD or DO school, the institution will do anything it can to ensure that you succeed and graduate, regardless of your age. Best of luck! The biggest hurdle is getting in.
There are all kinds of pressures and fears of missing out which are human to a degree. But if you zoom out and realize your career spans over more than 40 years, a couple of years of difference is so miniscule. People start new careers in their forties, fifties or even later. You will probably live a long life if you take reasonable amount of self care. In fact probably longer than any other generation before you with more resources and opportunities than ever before so might as well use it! Best of luck xx
It’s bullshit how people are fixated on age, age is nothing considering medicine is currently offered as post graduate course. I know a lady who started medical school at Yale university at 45 years of age.
Hey guys, So glad to watch this video! I am 23, finishing my nursing (BN) program next year and planning to start med school but not quite sure. You guys helped a lot understanding what it is all supposed to be. God bless you both!!! A big fan of you both today onwards.
I’ll be 28 when I start! Wrapping up an MPH beforehand and working at the same time, I definitely could have started when I graduated from undergrad but I honestly think taking that time helped me understand myself and my place in the world
I'm saying this here because I need to take this weight off my heart. I am 19 years old and in a month I will be a student at the best university in my country, the faculty of electronic engineering and telecommunications and although I lied to myself that I will be fine there, I know that my heart belongs to medicine, that I would give all the money I could earn as an electronics engineer to be with those in need. I don't know how I got to the wrong faculty, I just know that I'm afraid to give up my current place, to disappoint those who helped me get here, to be a year behind the others, I'm afraid to fail, but even more afraid to live a life with the regret that I did not do what my heart asked me to do. Reading your comments I understood that I am not the only one who feels that way.
I am 22 and starting a Masters in Clinical Neuroscience this fall. I have wanted to study medicine for as long as I remember but have not been able to because of funding. I am at the age where I am starting to reconsider and rethink my commitments to the field but every time I do so I feel so much guilt for even thinking about quitting the one thing I'm truly passionate about. Honestly great video
I am in my final year of engineering from a Government College. And I have so much passion for being a Cardic Surgeon, even when I know it's a total 12 years.
I'm at law school and a woman. The pressure to find a balance between a successful career and doing family plans/ starting a family/ having kids is really high rn since my enviroment is getting married, having kids and building houses. Idk if I could put 100% in all at the same time. I choose the career path for now and hope that I could use the time wisely to build myself. But I definetely support the statement: One should not compare himself to others. Thanks alot for this discussion 🙏🏼💙
I’m moving to the UK soon, 17, but I’m so behind compared to all the UK students. Realistically, I won’t be able to apply to med school until I’m 25+. I honestly needed this to cheer myself up every time I start thinking about this.
I started pharmacy school pharmd program at the age of 27 will graduate at the age of 32 . I'm not sure if I will regret or not for now I just want to finish what I start it . If u ask why so late ? I came to the US at the age 22 took many classes at a community college to figure out my passion , worked a little bit . By the time I was actually admitted to the program I was 27 . Life happens ! And all these milestones of achievements we have is just our brain putting more strain to our journey 😇
Hey. Just checking on you. How’s pharmacy going ? I’m 22, the age you were when you came to the US except I’m from South Africa. I’ve been considering pharmacy after being confused for a long time
I’ll be 25 when I graduate my undergraduate but I really want to apply for med school but I was worried about finishing med school at the age of 29 😭😭😭
im 21 this year. next year im gonna get into medschool after 3 years of trying. i hope i could get there. i hope i could achieve that dream job, a doctor.
Hey Kenji and Arun, happy to come across this, really needed this :) Just a few weeks ago after my Obgyn appointment with a very inspiring doctor, I realized that there was this long-forgotten goal of mine, which is to become a doctor and save lives. I joined the St.John Ambulance when I was younger because I have always been passionate about helping people out and being there for them during some of their most vulnerable moments in life, but this goal of mine sort of drifted away after I stepped into the commerce stream for my senior high school years. This goal of mine has been long-forgotten at the back of my mind until a few weeks ago I went to visit the obgyn for some emergency matters and met this gynaecologist that is absolutely friendly, calm, and patient. I wouldn't be going into too many details here about my appointment with her, but all I can say is that I was at my absolute worst state during the time she saw me, I felt extremely unwell, vulnerable, and was really anxious as it was my first time at the hospital by myself (+ never have I expected that my first visit to the hospital by myself would be the gynae's office haha). She managed to calm me down during the ultrasound and gave me sound advice on my issue. I'm not sure how to describe the feeling, but after the appointment with her it just struck me that hey I would like to be there for patients too when they're feeling vulnerable, it reminded me of why I joined St.John in the first place during high school, it reminded me of the goal I left off. I'm currently 23 and in the final year of my accounting degree, I'd say it's a good career pathway in monetary terms, but I figured out that what I really wanna achieve in life is not just about getting a lot of money, I genuinely just want to help people out, and for that, I don't even mind about the amount of pay that I will be getting when I think about it. Hence, my plan right now is to, of course, focus on completing my current accounting degree now, I will still be in this field for maybe the next 5-10 years (to earn and save enough for med school), but I'll be taking up my foundations and basics in sciences at the same time. So hopefully by around 30, I will have gotten everything ready to get into med school, to learn what I'm passionate about, and to do what I'm passionate about for the next half of my life. Also, I think I'll probably go for obgyn for my specialty too. When I was younger I've never thought or taken this specialty seriously until now that I've grown up and realized that it's a very meaningful specialty where you get to help not just patients who are at their most vulnerable moments, but you also get to be there to welcome new lives into the world (Obs). I'm leaving this comment here first, and hopefully, in a few years' time, I'll be able to come back to this comment and let you all know that I've successfully made it. Also, to anyone out there that is considering taking up medicine as a second career in life, go for it! I'm sure we will be able to achieve what we want to!
This was absolutely beautiful, thank you for sharing story and reflection. I’m glad you’re playing the long game and are engaged with a very strong sense of purpose. I’m sending you good energy to work on this over the next few years 🙏🏾
@@ArunJayaraj Thank you so much, Arun! I'll be sure to come back and give an update here too :D Sending you good vibes and energy as well on your journey in medicine! 🙌
My god I am about to cry!! I am in accounting to!!! I am 24 and I am thinking of going to medical school!!!! It's crazy to see someone who is the same as me! I have no science background? How do you plan to maneuver your way to medical school? This would really help me!!
I needed to hear this. I’m not sure if you’ll read my comment, but I had three signs that made me switch from my degree in astronomy to biomedicine. After waking up for 2-3 weeks of non stop no holds barred fights in my head whether I should do medicine, medicine won. Now as off writing this I’m questioning my qualifies, and this video answers my concerns. I’m enrolled into medicine from nexts semester, and I’ll rewatch this video to remind me of that fact. Thank you, and I hope when I view this in 10+ years, my concerns of not being good enough for a doctor is behind me, I am working as a doctor and fulfilling my purpose, and proud of myself that I answered my call and the signs. Thank you gents.
Thank you so much for sharing your journey-it’s truly inspiring. Switching paths is never easy, but it sounds like you’ve made a decision that aligns with your passion and purpose. It’s completely normal to question yourself at this stage, but remember, the very fact that you’re reflecting on your “why” shows the kind of self-awareness and dedication that will make you a great doctor. Keep believing in yourself and take it one step at a time. Wishing you all the best as you start this exciting new chapter-I have no doubt you’ll look back in 10 years with pride!
I started medical school at the age of 27, in the first two years I became very disappointed with it for 2 main reasons: 1. You will study certain subject that has absolutely nothing to do with medicine and can be very demotivating. 2. You will study for 5-6 years and you will only have the ability to prescribe drugs (not medicine or medications) unless you study further to specialize in a particular field. This was the breaking point for me. So I transferred to dental school and im so happy with my choice because I'm as knowledgeable as any doctor, can also write prescription without any issue, work only in the oral cavity and make much more than any medical doctor whilst being my own boss.
@@English1band thank you I'm very well. It's fantastic, very stressful job but nobody will pay you a good salary without high levels of responsibility and stress. But due to my over inflated ego(I'm working on it); I enjoy the prestige and the title of profession. But let me know where you plan to go for study, I can give you more insight about Europe and UK.
in Canada, all of our medical schools require an undergraduate degree, and most undergraduate programs takes 3-4 years to complete. We finish highschool here at 18, then 3-4 years Undergrad, we get into med school at about 21+
I'm 24 and I'm preparing for my medical exam. I have a biochemistry degree but i have always wanted to become a doctor. I actually took a year gap and prepare for medical college 4 years back and I failed.
For me learning new things in life doesn't need a time frame,if you are so passionate about studying medicine ,I suggest you to do what your mind says, after all medicine is a branch of science in which knowledge should be updated from time to time till we die,so in that sense age doesn't matter .Follow your passion, by the way I graduated from medical school at the age of 31.
We are both on the same boat and from the same country and I am applying for medical school at age 25 as well, medicine its not a race but its a marathon.
Thank you so much for this, the point that really hit me , why em I thinking about age and society and people, i am doing this to make MY dream come true ,and it is never too late to start making your dream come true 💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪
Thanks youtube for recommending this video ...... In india after completing class 12 th .. whoever want to pursue medicine has to go through a exam called as NEET .......which has so high cutoff that out of 25 lakh students only 10 to 15 thousand get their chance to fulfill their dream ...... I am among them .. i passed my 12 th back in 2017 ..... But i had no intrest in being a doctor i was searching for other carrier option but didnt realise how time gone away ....so few years back i got serious about my carrier as a doctor and i apperaed in NEET exam ..... Scoring 610 out of 720 but their is no possibility that i would get any government collage on this mark despite coming under 25 thousand rank out of 25 lakh and private medicle degree goes around 120000 dollars which is no way i can offord ......... Next year i will be 25 ..... And still depandent on parents .......worst son i am to them ......not getting idea what to do next .
This August, I am going to the UK to study biomedical sciences. I didn't take A levels or IB. I took the foundation course so the only test I took is IELTS. Kenji's videos are making me consider entering medical school. Does anyone know if there is a way for international students to enter graduate entry medicine without an A-level score? I searched some schools but they all seemed to ask for A-level test scores or something equivalent. I think preparing A levels now to enter the standard medicine course is a bit late since I already used my money for the foundation course. I also don't think I will be able to get enough score to enter. (I've never studied English abroad.) One thing I have in mind is to take A levels while doing bio-med but I don't know what to start and I think it will eventually lower my undergraduate grade which is really important not just for entering graduate medicine but for my whole life of getting a job.
😂😂😂There are 40 & 50 year olds in med school 25 pssshh you’re just a baby… Being a physician is something you can continue to do well off into your 70’s…. you are just fine…
@@DoctorKenji Thanks man! Currently an LPN on a med surge float going for RN, afterwards I may finish up a few classes at my community college, transfer to the Uni and start pre-med while doing my online BSN
Kenji, I am also a Biology student studying at the University of The Gambia, I will graduate in January 2023. I am planning to come to the UK and study medicine, but even if I get a place in medicine I will be charge as an international which is around £30,000 yearly am thinking funding this could be tedious.
Do you think being older and going to med school affects what kind of speciality you’d want to do? Ie would you be less inclined to do a specialty like surgery or something which requires a long training programme? Have been thinking about this a lot recently
Kenji, you moved from Kenya to UK and you moved to UK around 14 or 15 years, you would be young at this time who do you live with at that time and which family member do you currently live with in UK because you said mum lives in Kenya, and Dad is Japanese, I know little about Kenya because am also an African, a Gambian, your capital is Nairobi and president is Uhuru Kenyatta.

So I transferred to dental school and im so happy with my choice because I'm as knowledgeable as any doctor, can also write prescription without any issue, work only in the oral cavity and make much more than any medical doctor whilst being my own boss.
Hi, I hope you're doing well, I'm 26 and I want to apply to dental school and I really want to know how things went for you
@@English1band thank you I'm very well. It's fantastic, very stressful job but nobody will pay you a good salary without high levels of responsibility and stress. But due to my over inflated ego(I'm working on it); I enjoy the prestige and the title of profession. But let me know where you plan to go for study, I can give you more insight about Europe and UK.
Wow this is exactly what I needed to hear. Saving for next time I doubt myself!!
in Canada, all of our medical schools require an undergraduate degree, and most undergraduate programs takes 3-4 years to complete.
All the best!
@@DoctorKenji thank you sir.
Full marks for this boys 👊🙌
Thanks so much!
Thanks for the information.
I'm 24 and graduated from microbiology. Considering to enter medical school and this video is truly a light.
So glad!
Although I m a science student but alaways found your videos helpful 🥰🥰
Happy to hear that! Thank you!!
We are both on the same boat and from the same country and I am applying for medical school at age 25 as well, medicine its not a race but its a marathon.
Thank you so much for this, the point that really hit me , why em I thinking about age and society and people, i am doing this to make MY dream come true ,and it is never too late to start making your dream come true 💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪
thank you so much!
I am 27 and starting my mbbs this year. I am so depressed due to my age barrier.
I'm planning to go to med school next year btw I'm 22, if you don't mind shall we have a talk about this?
Hi , Thats great .. are you doing mbbs in abroad?
Great tips!! Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome!
I was so confused by comments but I forgot people in other countries can start at 18 and not 22 like in the United States.
Thank you so much for such an insightful video helping me to decide!
You're very welcome!
I'm so happy I watched this.
I'm glad!
I was very disturbed by me being starting at age of 24 whose done bsc but now I know the way I am going is right and join med school 😌.
I really needed to see this. Thank you!
You're so welcome!
😂😂😂There are 40 & 50 year olds in med school 25 pssshh you’re just a baby… Being a physician is something you can continue to do well off into your 70’s…. you are just fine…

Much, TY
You’re very welcome! :)
Going to be 24 🙂i already feel its too late to start medicine
I may not be in med school until 34 but my dream is EM Doctor...
It will happen!
@@DoctorKenji Thanks man! Currently an LPN on a med surge float going for RN, afterwards I may finish up a few classes at my community college, transfer to the Uni and start pre-med while doing my online BSN
sorry I sent you an email for feedback but I didnt recieve any respond 😕
Kenji, I am also a Biology student studying at the University of The Gambia, I will graduate in January 2023. I am planning to come to the UK and study medicine, but even if I get a place in medicine I will be charge as an international which is around £30,000 yearly am thinking funding this could be tedious.
What is your take on someone who is a Philosophy major and Holistic Health minor wanting to go to med school?
If it’s your dream, I think you should go for it!
Do you think being older and going to med school affects what kind of speciality you’d want to do? Ie would you be less inclined to do a specialty like surgery or something which requires a long training programme? Have been thinking about this a lot recently
I am from India here mbbs starts at 17 I am a BSC graduate want to go for mbbs at 23
I'm also on the same boat If you don't mind can we chat in instagram brother?
Kenji, you moved from Kenya to UK and you moved to UK around 14 or 15 years, you would be young at this time who do you live with at that time and which family member do you currently live with in UK because you said mum lives in Kenya, and Dad is Japanese, I know little about Kenya because am also an African, a Gambian, your capital is Nairobi and president is Uhuru Kenyatta.
I lived with my mum at the time but i now live with other medical students
