  • Feral hogs have become a big problem for farmers and ranchers. Though the problem mostly impacts rural Arkansas, experts believe metro areas could be next.

I lived in Florida for a number of years in the late '70s / early '80s. Feral hogs were just starting to be a problem there then. Once they get a foothold, there's no stopping them. Here in Texas it's open season on them year-round. They're smart animals too. Eventually they'll start avoiding the traps. At least they taste good...

Feral hogs are open season in Arkansas and are considered to be vermin.

I mean, from what i read, you can't shoot them unless your hunting something else. However, from the stories ive heard, if one shows up in the back yard, its taking 9mm

In Missouri, it is illegal to shoot wild hogs on Conservation Department land. The Conservation Department discourages people from shooting them on their own land but I hear they are tasty. Trapping is a much more effective way of removing wild hogs. Large traps can catch 30 animals at a time.

It's not just feral hogs that are a problem. Deer are now coming into the edge of Texarkana and are destroying gardens. We can no longer grow field peas, corn, and watermelons due to the invasion. While deer are fascinating to watch, they are destructive. The only way we can have any watermelons or peas at all is to encircle our reduced-size garden with giant zinnias which deer do not like. They destroyed our pea patch several years ago the night before we were going to pick them. Our melon vines were pulled up and dragged to the edge of the woods before the deer feasted on the ripe melons. Packs of coyotes are also invading and are dangerous to pets. All of this is primarily due to deforestation outside the town that drives the animals into more sheltered surroundings. Every day, we see many logging trucks go past our house hauling pulpwood logs to the papermills. These loggers do not selectively remove trees but remove everything, inducing extensive soil erosion and depletion. Does anyone want to take our mountain lions that have been seen inside the city limits? Our neighbor will no longer water his grass in the evening after two mountain lions crossed the corner of his lawn one evening while he was outside. My daughter saw one at the edge of the woods next to her house one evening a couple of years ago. A monstrous feral hog invaded our yard several years ago.

Coyotes and Cougars are moving back into the area of Tennessee and Arkansas. So there are predators.

Loosen restriction on hog hunting and have open season on them at will. Non-resident and resident shouldn't be required to have a license to hunt them. Problem could be solved.

Don't start doing a bunch of hunting it doesn't work trapping is the way hunting splits them up and create larger breeding groups they have a hierarchy and a dominency so just keep that in mind folks hunting them is fun but it perpetuates the problem

Hmmm, lots of pork for feeding the homeless? Something good could come out of this. Maybe.

How do we pay for this? Sounds simple and good but the homeless can hunt if they want to. Ambition is the difference in thinking. Someone else can solve the problem easily.

Its getting harder and harder to find pure Razorback as they keep mating with the Eurasian wild boar that were brought in to hunt. When the piglets have stripes and the adults have a grizzled snout its a sign the wild boar genes are dominanting.
