Love Rhiannon Giddens since her days of singing with the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Very glad and appreciate seeing her bringing our priorities as a nation - human rights - to the fore. Thanks Amy and DN team for this story 👍
I love the collab with this. Very important going forward to gain awareness of this huge and common issue. Wasted life because it was stolen by systemic failings, and people acting as gods where they should have no right.
Yes it absolutely was. However, there were son many more people, agencies and systems to blame for his demise. The jails which most certainly need reform are just the low hanging fruit. Where was his lawyer who allowed him to sit in jail without a court date? Who was the court clerk or judge that didn't give him a court date? He was in foster care and had learning disabilities and mental health issues before he went to jail. Why wasn't he sent by the judge to a mental health facility. Where were the teachers and social workers? Where was his family? He survived jail but couldn't survive his family.
I have loved Rhiannon Giddens for SO long now. She amazes me over & over & over again. From banjo to opera, she always delivers more than expected. So many like her never get recognized; I'm so glad she found her way.
Kalief Browder -- May you rest in peace. How does anyone get held without charges? How does anyone get put in solitary for a supposed backpack?! America has completely failed.
Rhiannon Giddens is a brilliant musician and her history in the Carolinas and herbmusician ship with instruments, singing, songwriting… you really should seek her out on youtube. To listen to her singing in French, singing In Celtic, or old Southern songs… her activism is undergirded with knowledge of racism in this country and how it drives so much unfortunate live experiences in this country. Browder had no advocates outside the Prison to remind the world he counted.
😢Oh how tragic for the African descendants of the American enslaved. Would you happen to know the lineages of the victims of this particular tragedy? Beautiful music!
That was so heartbreaking. I remember when he passed. They took his life from his living body and left a scarred shell. He desperately struggled to make peace with who he had become. 😢
Being "white presenting" doesn't exempt anyone in this country from police brutality and possible false imprisonment either. My brother (white) was a victim of police brutality and killed himself. Kalif really was tortured though. 💔 The Innocence Project is one of my fav charities. 🖤
I was blessed , 😇 in the fall of 1963 , my high school took us to Norfolk County Jail. A two hour visit, and I promised myself that I would never get put in jail. I’m 81 now , headed for 107 , and I will stay out of jail. 🙏🙌👌🤞🤔🧐😎🤓
Amy....you have to STOP WITH THE STUPID INTRODUCTION. We all know that this is the Democracy Now channel so no need to repeat it every time on EVERY VIDEO. And what do you mean by the "war and peace report" that you mention every intro?
The reason why marginalized people everywhere, including African Americans care about Palestinians is because they can see themselves in them , they understand each other because they go through similar things.

It’s sad how few people watch these videos. Speaks loudly to how far we have to go as a citizenry.
Just so heartbreaking....I'm so so sorry....Thanks Amy and be safe all.
Kaluefs story sticks with me. My mother used to say " the slaughter of the innocents".
You are an inspiration, Rhiannon! Keep it up.
My heart is breaking
❤❤❤
Thank you!
That is right the prisons are for money. Thank you your honesty and application of your talent towards justice

Wasted life because it was stolen by systemic failings, and people acting as gods where they should have no right.
Your courage is much appreciated sis.❤️
This story is still hard to hear. Poor Kalief didn’t deserve this.
Kahlif story was hard to hear. This has been and beautiful segment. Thank you DemocracyNow
It was and he looked like a kind soul from the looks of his pic. 💔😓

Great work by Ms. Giddens. A powerful, meaningful, and beautiful song.
How terribly sad 😢
Deep emotions lead to a lot of creativity. There's a mindfulness book called 30 Days to Overcome Suicidal Thoughts by Harper Daniels that's helpful.
God Bless you Amy Goodman and the Democracy Now staff! 😢❤from 🇹🇹

Kalief now in Heaven singing Praises to Jesus. 🙏🙏🙏🙏So sad to think how many innocent souls crying for help in prison all over the world.

I've done time. Even as a white person I can tell you that it's only about punishment. Nothing else.
I get what the artist is aying the way the systems are designed these are the evils we need to abolished
Okay, this is good.
I worked in Rikers Island s in NYC. This place is not good, have to close. There are some correctional officers that need mental health .
So cool
Is there a world news report today with Democracy Now?
Thanks...
Anyone?
Still waiting 😮
🙏🙏💔💔
Rihanna thank you for his remembrance.
John Oliver interviewed him ☹️
How do you even hold someone 3 years without charge? I thought that was illegal.
Kalief should still be alike
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
You, all of YOU did a lot don't get tier from HUMANIT

democracy now is broadcast live to TV and radio, where it is common to call out the name of the show after returning from commercials.
Is he a Gazan? No? No one cares. Only Gaza matters
What the fuck man
The reason why marginalized people everywhere, including African Americans care about Palestinians is because they can see themselves in them , they understand each other because they go through similar things.
This is fucking stupid 😂
Troll better
Oh but wait. It most assuredly matters to My Creator😁 No peace here either. My Creator does not allow it.
Free palestine 🇵🇸
