  • A number of people who knew John, both medical professionals and those from road racing have asked me to post this. I hope those who loved and admired him are happy for me to share this piece on youtube. I never met him myself but it is very clear from the memories others have shared that he was a very special and very generous man.
Tributes have been paid to Dr John Hinds, one of the "flying doctors" of Irish road racing.
He was involved in an accident while providing medical cover at a Skerries 100 practice session, the Motorcycle Union of Ireland said.
He died in hospital in Dublin on Saturday.
Dr Hinds, 35, from Tandragee, and his colleague Dr Fred McSorley were dubbed "the flying doctors" of Irish motorcycle sport.
He was a consultant at Craigavon Area Hospital in County Armagh.
Dr Hinds provided medical care at motorcycle race events
He regularly worked at the North West 200 motorbike races in County Antrim.

    The man deserves a
statue/monument I'm memorial at the very least. Absolutely a terrible loss.

Which ignorants gave John Hinds the "thumbs down" ? John was an exceptional example of human compassion, paired with 1st line emergency skills. He saved many lives by being at the crash site first, and the racers trusted him to be there for them when needed. The 'flying helicoper service' in his memory would be the greatest and most fitting tribute to this selfless & humble man. RIP John Hinds, may God bless you & provide you with the bike of your dreams.

It's really to bad that when men such as Dr. Hind pass that they can't see just how many people that may have never even been in the same breathing space as them have such admiration and respect for them and what they do for others. RIP to a great rider and a great doctor and human being, glad to have been able to see you work in the field.

I don't understand 23 thumbs down. Lots of family's have there farther, Husbands and brothers still alive because of this man. You may think bikers deserve it if you race, But do there children. Surely you can't say it's there own fault. For it's not there children's. But many are still alive because of men like Dr John and these riders children are glad for these doctors. I think you need to have a good think. Yes it's the riders decision to race, But these doctors save not just the riders, But there family's to. So why dislike such men. I know why many race, Because your never more alive other than when pushing the envelope and being close to death. It's better than sitting in your armchair complaining about those who seek to push boundary,s.

Welcome to the Internet, bud - it's the "land" of truly free speech. I say that for two reasons: Much of the statements made via the Internet have a zero value (thus, "free"). But also because, for the most part, they can be uttered (typed) without a cost to the person who is making the statement. The people in this comment area who've made negative comments about the late Dr. John should try walking into any pub in Northern Ireland and saying the same thing. I strongly suspect that not a single one of them will find that his statement ends up being "free."
RIP, Dr, John. I've seen videos of some of your lectures - you've probably saved many more people than the ones you personally worked on.

I don’t know anything about racing. I know even less about medical. Knew nothing of Hinds til 6 hours ago. Binge listening as I sand floors. I’ve always respected first responders, fireman, anyone put in life and death situations. Many that are quite traumatic. Using humor to make certain points or to take the pressure off an intense moment indicates someone that was extremely knowledgeable and caring. And it helped he understood the attraction to racing. I am much like John in that the more stressful, serious situation, I calm and become a leader. In trauma, having John there I’m sure lowered anxieties of medics and patients. And families of deceased know that if John was there, they can be at peace knowing everything that could be done , was done. I have no idea why this popped up in my feed but anytime I hear the roar of a cycle , I’ll think of John. If there are any links to an in-depth story of what occurred his last day I’d appreciate it

There might be some irony in this observation but it testifies how exceptional this guy was and how exceptional and risky were his working conditions.
