IMPORTANT: Depending on where you live, unfinished attics can get very hot and/or very cold. Consider your specific climate when determining what can be stored in your attic. Non-porous & non-biodegradable items like plastic, metal, ceramic & glass will fare the best in long-term attic storage.
its not depending where we live. It's a guarantee that it will get very very hot. Even a sunny 80F day can make the attic go into the 120s just because of solar gain.
Came across this video after watching the Lowes video on "How To Add Ann Attic Pulldown Ladder". I almost passed this video over but I am glad I didn't. It's simple and informative. I just wish my attic was this well laid out, clear, and used the rolls of insulation batting. (someone did the "Blow In Insulation" and I HATE dealing with the LOOSE insulation). After you get the "between-rafter" insulation installed, the pieces of plywood (that act as a floor) is a great idea for almost any part of the attic where you will "possibly" ever be stepping, and/or storing boxes. It can get to some extreme TEMPs in an attic so if you have a standard, basic rectangular-shaped, box style house, with ventilation louvers on each end, you might want to go to motorized louvers with a PUSH-PULL, air flow design. Especially in the summertime, to "move" the hot air OUT of the attic. Many of the active ventilation louvers are "Temp Controlled" and move air out only when a threshold TEMP is reached. They then shut off when temps drop below the limits set for the cooling fans. Loved the simplicity of the video, with no "fluff" added.
I like these storage ideas, especially the tiered shelving to fit with the roof line. Im in Nebraska, so I store more in my basement than my attic, but many of the ideas transfer. Can you show some innovative garage storage next? I've got a tight garage that barely fits 2 cars! And also has to hold bikes, lawn and snow equipment, other outdoor kids toys, and a freezer chest. Help!
I just stack the storage bins atop one another. Worked well until my wife put 100lbs of holiday decorations on top and everything shattered and smashed into a trillion pieces 🤣

Idea 3 won't work with the way it's shown. The newly added vertical 2x4 support beams are added to one side of the roof rafters, then putting the horizontal 2x4 on one side of the roof rafter won't line up with the newly added vertical 2x4 support beam as the horizontal 2x4 will be flush against the roof rafter and the other end will have 2" of space from it to the newly added vertical 2x4. Notice how they won't show you the vertical connecting to the roof rafters and the horizontal connecting to the roof rafters at the same time.
The clear bins are not a good advice though. Usually clear bins are made of a different plastic type than opaque bins... They will melt away during summer temperatures. Ask me how I know. I still use them, but the lid does not close now because the bins are so warped due to heat.

Yup....No insects(sic), not humidity...the storage of perishable fabrics, paper goods and books just love such an environment. And lets not forget the temperature extremes - most things love that as well! Furniture dries out, joints fail - making it easier to pack and move in pieces! Sorry, but unless the area is well insulated and temperature and humidity controlled, few things endure well for long in an antic.
Forget storage in the attic. As commented below, temps, humidity, and insects can wreak havoc with your stuff. Start decluttering so you won't need attic storage.
I"m not comfortable with the image of loose insulation still visible in the video. Either the attic is a place a person can hang out in long enough to make improvements and move things around, or it isn't. Breathing fiberglass particles is not healthy and I would not recommend people spend any time in that environment unless it relates to some other essential aspect of the home.

Lol that attic is huge and has full sized windows. That's just a standard room at this point.
It was a set, sure, but the idea was to present ideas because of anglular aspect of a roof.
