3D Print and Airbrush a Realistic Scale Model!

  • This tutorial will explain how I created a realistic HO scale water tower using a combination of 3D printing and airbrushing. This was my first time attempting a project like this, and it was a ton of fun!
I’m brand new to scale modeling, and this is a perfect model to begin with. I was surprised at how great the final result came out! If I can do it, then anyone can.
This model is especially great for beginners because an aged water tower would realistically show signs of age and wear, which means many inevitable mistakes will actually add to the effect of realism (the imperfection makes it perfect- if only all of life worked this way).
    •Original model on Thingiverse:
    www.thingiverse.com/thing:311...
I sliced the model using the Prusa version of Slic3r and printed all the parts on the Prusa Mk2s with no rafts or supports. I used 20% infill for most pieces, and 100% infill on the smaller parts like ladders and decking.
This was also a great opportunity to practice airbrushing, which is a new hobby for me. I’ve really been curious at how well the airbrush would work on 3D prints, and it turns out that it works pretty darn well!
Most importantly, I can confidently say that this video has the BEST cinematic montage of a scale water tower ever made. 🔥
This video was inspired by the countless hours of Luke Towan tutorials I’ve been watching. If you haven’t seen Luke’s channel, definitely check it out. Even if you don’t make models, everything is SO well done!

The model is cool and the end product looks great. For me, you captured the experience nicely and your images were crisp and nice to look at. You use BRoll really well. A nicely told story with a great topic. #nosmallcreator

This is pretty cool. I use to do IT for a company that worked with 3d models via cad files and all that jazz. That was a few years before 3d printing because a thing though. Very interesting.

It’s pretty cool how much you can do with it. I know that resin printers are better for small detailed pieces, but I’m a little too hesitant to deal with all of the chemicals and everything.

The Enthusiasm Project yeah some people are pretty talented with what they can create. Although back in the day 3D printing was just a tiny spark in someone’s head I’m sure! Would love a go on one!

They’re pretty crazy. There a channel called Tabletop Minions that I’ve been watching a lot of lately and they cover painting for tabletop war games. It’s pretty impressive, even though I’ve never played any.

Just found this video it is perfect for my Project. We have an Animated accessory, a Flood light , where the worker climos up the ladder and at the top he fixed the flood lights and they turn on then he slides down the ladder. I have it now on a Arduino and relays that run the animation so he climbs up lights come then as he slides down the Arduino plays a scream sound. But, I want to use this for an old friend that worked for the Water department back home in Illinois. So I need to move the lights to the four corners then set a older style water tank on top. So My friend is now fixing the water tank and when the lights come on its fixed but since he is a good guy I have he crying out Wheeeeeee! as he slides down the ladder instead of Screaming. I will resize the file for I am S Scale. Then adapt it to this animated tower. I hope you approve. I would love to air brush paint but my wife is afraid of fumes, what do you have for fumes extraction???? Thank You for posting your work is just beautiful. Dennis

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Wow Dennis, that sounds like an awesome project! And hilarious.
As for fumes, I just airbush in the garage with the door open, but I know they do sell little "booths" that will suck the fumes out and away. A mask is probably a good idea too. 👍

@@tombuck I only have a 2 car garage and my car is a 2014 Corvette with 10,000 miles on it. Don;t think I could paint in the garage, But Maybe i could use sheets of plastic to make a booth in a corner???? Or Use a vent fan in the basement. I have a range hood with a fan that can be made to vent outside I wonder if that is ok. I think I would enjoy Air brushing stuff. If i can convince my wife I can make it safe. She is a retired MD sometimes not helpful. Thanks. Dennis

Very surprised the leg supports didn't warp. Just by chance would it have been better to use plastruct tubing for dimensional stability and print the cross pieces to fit?
