Instructional time lapse video of the paint and weathering of the 1/48 scale Vought Corsair F4U-1D by Tamiya as shown by The Inner Nerd
The First part shows surface preparation techniques such as filling panel gaps and seams with modelling filler and sanding them smooth to get a seamless join between parts. Also basing techniques are included in this section using Mr Hobby "Mr Surfacer 1200 & 1500" to prime the surface ready for painting.
The second part of the video demonstrates the black-basing technique used to achieve a pre-weathered look and surface texture replicating that of an aged and worn aircraft. Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline is used at an operating pressure of 15PSI and a 0.15mm needle + nozzle during this process.
Decals follow painting with the aid of Mr Hobby Mr Mark Setter & Softer products. These products allow the decal to form to the shapes and panel lines of the surface which you can see in the video.
After this the machine polish process is shown to remove the "orange peel" effect from the clear coat. This is done using Tamiya sanding sponges in 2000 & 3000 dpi grit and Tamiya Polishing Compounds.
Next is the weathering of the model. This is started using Abteilung 502 oil paints thinned to a wash consistency. Then used as panel line wash the oil is applied across the model to achieve a dirty, grimey & worn look. Further weathering including unthinned Abteilung 502 oil paints to create streaking and water marks concludes weathering
The final part of the video explains the final assembly of small parts including landing gear, lights, antennas and canopy fitment as the model nears completion. All final assembly is completed with CA superglue.

I'm 62 years old as of August 29, 2017, I'm retired, and you're videos brought back some very fond memories of the local hobby store, paint, brushes, glue, etc. And I'm seriously considering a little trip with my grandson to my local hobby shop in the morning? Some of my best times as an adult were the times I spent working on a model. Thank you so much for making me REMEMBER!

Awesome job. The F4U is probably my favorite WW2 era plane.
Nice model. Just a note for accuracy geeks like me, the correct overall color should be ANA 606 "Semi-Gloss Sea Blue". The Tamiya paint equivalent is AS-8 "Navy Blue". The modern Federal Standard color would be FS25042. The strip of upper fuselage and cowling in front of the windscreen was normally painted ANA 607 "Non-Spectral Sea Blue" (same color, but flat) to reduce glare in the pilot's eyes. Equivalent is FS35042. The national insignia (star & bar) circle should be "Insignia Blue" ANA 605. Equivalent to Tamiya XF-8 or FS35044.

@@TheInnerNerd Please don't take my post as too critical of your nice model! I have build models that don't have perfectly "accurate" color too. Either because I didn't know, couldn't find a good color reference, or couldn't find (or mix) the accurate color paint. I just wanted people to know what the "correct" color should be, in case they care but don't know.

Dad was getting into painting the markings on right about the time I was discovering cars, girls and beer/booze and foolishly considered these endeavors “More important” than modeling! The Corsair was always one of my FAVs!

I am an artist and, while drawing fighter aircraft is my thing, doing models of them is not. It is a skill I never acquired. It is, therefore, infinitely amazing to me to see a true artist building a beautiful model. Thank you for a wonderful insight.

Joseph Washington, it is 4 years later. I hope you dove back into the hobby. I am 64 and when you were writing your comment, I was still working. I started building again in about 2019 and am now retired. We retired two years ago, sold our home and moved from California to our new home in Alabama. I joined a hunting club and modeling club and have been hunting, working around our new home and model building to keep me busy.
Hopefully you have jumped in with both feet and found the joy and pleasure of listening to your favorite music or podcast and revisiting the simpler times in life when were young. There are also a bunch of modeling shows out there throughout the country that give us old farts something to do and poke our noses into. I only feel old when I am climbing out of bed in the morning after a cup of joe and 40 minutes getting dressed, breakfast and another cup of coffee, I am ready to take on the world, one painful step at a time.
The cost of this stuff may seem high relative to when we were 12 years old, but then again, in 1968 when my brother came home from Vietnam and bought a new V.W. Beetle in So.California, it was a little over $1,800.00 out the door. And my parents home in the San Fernando Valley was worth about $20,000 in 1968, today it is on the market for over $800,000. And my father had a Union Oil 76 service station in San Fernando and we sold gas for 28 cents a gallon and during gas wars, the price went down to 22 cents a gallon for Ehtyl . So everything has gone up.
These videos on TH-cam are a tremendous help. My models now look better than those 'expert' builds showcased in the display cases of those Sears anchored shopping center hobby shops from a time past, where you could see the men/shopkeepers cringe when a bunch of us kids jumped off of our stingrays and came into the hobby shop to ooggle at the displayed models.

Nice build! All cool man everything, every one involved. I love the way this builder sands the edges off the decals and in effect also results in a color sanding of the paint. That technique can sure get rid of blemishes on all of surface. Many F4U 1d's(FG1D) have same blue in main main wheel wells. There is evidence many had silver dope painted over red primer and or the yellow zinc chromate shown here in main wheel wells. I love this builder's use of post shading. The use of streaking from upper fuselage main tank area is spontaneous and airflow looking

I was just about to begin this kit tonight and wanted to see how it goes here. I really enjoyed watching your work. Tbh when you began sanding I didnt understand the motive (I only did armored vehicles and Im new even to those) annnnd BOOM that perfect shine on that smooth surface left my jaw open, literally. I know I wont be able to get this kind of finish on mine yet, but its really good to see and learn like this. Thank you, good luck on everything!
You never know if you are able to get certain effect on model until you try it :) Sometimes it is a long try and error trip, and sometimes it comes out better then you expected on the first shot.

I really like the way you initially sprayed the inner surface of the panels a shade lighter in order to give them a sun-bleached effect. But then you lost that when you applied the top coats and all the polishing. Really beautiful work altogether. I'd pay good money for a B-24D in 44th BG colors like the one my dad flew on the low-level Ploesti raid!

I'm 48 and newly disabled. I built plastic scale models when I was young but it was more of a way for my parents to keep me occupied than for me to learn how to do it right. I didn't have the correct tools, just glue. I never painted any of them and they were just awful. My next project will be MUCH better thanks to you. Be well.

Hello, I really like your video. I bought same model and I have some questions. It includes three acrylic paints. I have airbrush and compressor. I tried to thin with water, with Revell thinner, but could not do it. Do you have any ideas or it does not need thinner? Also, my airbrush stopped working and it completely broke. I tried to paint the model with brush, but I think not good quality as the paintings are mat and not metallic. Do you have any suggestions for me? Also fuselage part could not match 100 % properly, as I also used sand paper too. Another question what I have, what do you think about Revell Spray colors? As I am from Georgia (Country) Revell does not have Spray Color international shipping. Any recommendations? Thanks a lot and my compliments to your video. Looking forward to your reply.
How much do you thin the paint? Whenever I thin to more than a 50/50 mix I get water coming out of the airbrush.

question, can you apply Tamiya TS 13 clear Coat over regular Tamiya Acrylic Paint? I did a test and the XF 53 Gray and smear.
Thank you. And yes you can. If you apply when the paint is fully cured (I leave overnight/next day) before coating with the clear. Also I make 1 mist coat of clear first just to seal the paint in, then wait around 5 hours before applying the following 2 thicker wet coats of clear to build the gloss. It's a slow process but it stops the clear cracking by adding the layer too quickly.
Also I leave 48 hours before flatting and polishing the clear to allow for enough curing time for the clear. This might be the cause of your smearing problem since the layers aren't fully dry

Hi, wonderful video! How do you set the canopy temporarily and then how do you remove it?

After you've applied the oil wash on the lines, you rub it off with paper towel. Can you please describe this process in more detail for us? Wet or dry? How long do you wait? Thanks.
Firstly the model is clear coated with clear gloss varnish (I use Mr Color GX100 in three layers). Next I apply the oil wash and allow to dry until the oils are dry to the touch. It can be left longer and still come off if the clear coat is high-shine (polished). Next it to remove it with a dry paper towel and dry cotton buds to removed the desired amount of oils. If there are areas that need to be cleaned further then a dampened towel or bud will be sufficient to remove the more stubborn areas of oil. Remember the glossier the clear coat the easier it will come off. Matte clear coats will grab more oil and be harder to clean off making the wash more of a filter than panel line accent.

Amazing job! Just curious why you chose Royal Blue over Gloss Sea Blue which was the standard colour.
This was at the start of my modelling career so I was at the point of just following the instructions for colour references rather than researching for myself. If you take a look at my Hellcat F5F-6, that's paintedin the correct Sea Blue of the aircraft :) Thanks for watching :)
What a beautiful piece of work! One technical note though: It seems that the final photographs are turned too much into blue /magenta colors (even shadows are visibly blue). Probably just wrong white balance settings on your camera? Because the colors of the plane in the video part are top notch.
Thank you. Yes my camera was struggling with the background (which is a white:blue gradient) along with a blue aircraft. Therefore they appear more blue/magenta than in the video
what plastic putty you use? i see that are very diluted and looks alot easier to apply

On this model I used Humbrol model filler. The reason why it's thinner is that I added poly cement which will thin it. Now I use Perfect Plastic Putty though and I find it much better ans easier to use so would recommend that over the Humbrol used in this video

A question for you, i'm just starting out using an airbrush, with your base and the main coat, how much do you thin them by? A great deal or not? I'm trying to figure out the balance of thinner and paint and can't quite wrack my brain around it.
Hello. You need to find a balance between thick and thin where the paint isn't spluttering out airbrush nor coming out so thinly that it's like watercolour. There should a a nice flow to the paint and no spatter around the edge of the pattern. What’s that green glue with the brush called? I’ve got some Mr. Cement S that just eats away my paint
Jacob Turnbull Tamiya Extra Thin Cement. It will do the same as Mr Cement S. Apply on unpainted surfaces or be extremely careful when applying to painted ones! Top tip - If applying to a painted part, just 'spot' the glue, dont brush it as this will remove paint also

I don't know if the size are just the same but the price is/are idk but it cost me $4usd plus the shipping fee=$6 usd it's also pre painted.

I'm wondering if you got one of the Tamiya kits. I got one from Tamiya and one from Trumpeter. Namely because this is my favorite WWII fighter, but I also want to compare the kits head to head to learn the pros and cons of each manufacturer. These planes flew in your country quite a bit in WWII, so I wonder if you have any still left there. Anyway, good luck with the build.

Thank you. White Spirit is a solvent/oil based thinner, similar to Turpentine, that will thin down oil paints and washes. Hope this helps and thanks for watching :)

BMW-BOY Thank you. Yes, I flat and polish to get rid of the orange peel effect created by layering up the clear coat. This creates a very smooth surface for the satin to sit on to improve the overall finish of the model

i am starting a tamiya corsair in the next days. The mirror finish you achieved with the tamiya compound is amazing. I have the 3 Compounds but never really used them (yet)... I will be using that technique the next time i want a mirror like metal finish. anyway, i am not sure why did you polish your model, because in the end you used a flat varnish... maybe you did it just to try that technique?
Great! It's a nice kit from what I remember -typical Tamiya quality of fit. The Tamiya compounds are also really good for getting a high gloss finish. I'm not sure it would work if you're trying to replicate chrome or high gloss metal finish though since it's actually the clear coat you're polishing, not the metal colour. It would look as though you have a poished glaze over the metallic colour. But yes give it a go anyway :) I used this technique to polish out the defects in the paint and get rid of the orange peel effect too, I still use this technique now to rid the model of orange peel, just not go as far as using the compounds to get a high goss finish. How thin is your post shade white+blue layer? What PSI?
I thin it to around 60% thinner, the paint should easily feather onto the model with no spatter around the spray pattern. I did this process to remove the orange peel effect caused by the gloss clear coats as well as take away the witness line from the decals. As for the overall surface finish it is not necessary

Thank you! The sanding is done to get rid of the uneven surface of the paint and/or gloss coats to make the surface even and smooth. This makes for a uniform finish once the model is complete. I explain in more detail in this video th-cam.com/video/W3zDmJwpPcY/w-d-xo.html
