It could maybe be fun to compare those "Ultra" boards including the price for the other "Ultra" items (because a person that buys this is not going to not buy the most expensive memory kit an GPU as well) like with an EPYC board with CPU and memory and GPU (that is the actual high end) and see what kind of machine you can get with that same money.
It`s idiotic that they publish an MB that`s even nearly double as expensive as an actual PRO board for which we know that actual PRO stuff always has the actual price hike because Professionals doing Professional Professions with Proficient budgets use that.

Honestly, what's the percentage of people who even need NVME drives that saturate PCIe Gen 4 (x4) speeds? I imagine it must be tiny. Like, very tiny. And I expect them all to be people with "workstation" machines (that probably run a Threadripper [Pro] or something of that sorts). But "regular" users... come on.
And those drives are already barely capable of operating near their maximum sequential speeds for more than a minute or so before overheating and throttling down massively, unless you slap a BIG heatsink (not what comes with any motherboard - I mean an actual heatsink with a lot more surface area) onto them and put in a dedicated little fan that constantly blows onto that heatsink (unless you have very hefty airflow through the whole case).
I can't even imagine how hot NVME drives for PCIe Gen 5 are going to be. You can't tell me those will be able to run near their maximum speeds for longer than a few moments without _active_ cooling. Hell, maybe you'll need server-(rack)-level airflow to keep them under control.
If anyone reading this considers themself a "regular" user and is using Gen 4 SSDs and is actually pushing them to their limits, please respond to this and tell me about your use cases, I'd love to hear them!

I personally wouldn't be so mad at motherboard prices if they at least tried to assert they were reliable by giving a longer warranty or something.
It's kinda why I have a hard time paying a premium for a board now because as far as I know, and the company knows, they are all equivalent reliability.
I already gladly pay more for a high-end power supply because you get some assurance it'll last longer with the more expensive unit having a ten/twelve year warranty vs only five for less expensive ones. Same story on SSDs too.

The more sophisticated the more prone to fail things become in general. I mean it's nice for future-proofing, but it's one of the things that can be cut from the board to cut cost. Same goes for Audio. The board should have the most basic audio output IMO. People who care about audio will buy a DAC and an AMP separately anyways. Also prices are INSANE since x570. i bought x470 Crosshair Hero on launch for 250EUR and it was a top tier board back then. Works with my 5800x3D up to this day. Except for lack of PCIe gen 4 there is absolutely nothing that it lacks from my perspective. Now a board with similar feature set costs almost 500EUR.

We could have stuck with PCIe Gen 4 on any regular consumer (not including "workstation", people who would buy a Threadripper and the like, here) platform for another bunch of years, probably. Afaik the fastest consumer GPUs right now can barely saturate 8 lanes of PCIe 4.0. Then we got drives that can saturate 4 lanes of that (with sequential operations) but also overheat and throttle down after less than a minute if you're not actively cooling them, anyway.
And does any regular consumer really need more I/O on their boards, either? If you can get 2.5 Gbit Ethernet and maybe a Thunderbolt/USB4 port, do you need more, still?

Hey Buildzoid I‘ve been a long-term fan of the channel and I mostly agree on your opinions. I am a bit of an overspender on mobos because I do like extracting the most features of a chipset, but some of your comments on the increased costs of motherboard components are slightly off. The X670 dual Promontory 21 chipset was specifically designed and used because it is cheaper to implement than the Zen2/3 I/O die X570 chipset. So specifically your comment on low-end X670 mobos being overpriced due to chipset costs is in this case wrong because keeping costs down there was the main goal. Especially the B650 boards will be even cheaper because only one Prom 21 chipset being implemented. And even the 600$ Mobos, even though they‘re overpriced can only be sold at that price because AIBs have used so many expensive components that they would barely make any margin selling it for 450-500$ which everyone would prefer. This tactic was experimented with on X570 and was perfected with Ampere GPUs and is rampant now. Sorry for the rant but not everything can be pushed onto that chipset, AMD was aware of the inflated X570 prices and wants to avoid them being inflated for too long now, ofc it will happen again in the first two months again, but hopefully it‘s just a short phase.

Carbon has always been a better deal, that ws my first z690 motheboard (even though I had major memory problems with it so I sold it on mecari) it usually has the best features for the money even though it’s still kinda overpriced, but it’s 130 more for the amd variant and it has the same features basically..I gaurente when 790 comes out it will probably be more than this carbon so to every year they hike up prices (mostly)
