I love your video, Brian! Their so helpful and since, I don't have a antivirus program... I get a lot of viruses and I watch your videos and they help me remove them!
Yeah you could disable Windows Defender if you wish. But not everyone will want to do that, so I showed them a way to get around it without disabling Windows Defender.
I think Windows Defender in Windows 8 is Microsoft Security Essentials, so running side by side would not be a good idea, because you only want to run one antivirus at a time.
Editing Hosts file in Windows 8 is different because Windows defender blocks any changes made, so you have to do what I do in this video to make any changes permanent.
for those who cant save the file, right click the host file and go to properties and disable "read only" if you are using Windows 10. I had the problems with it, it constantly said "save as" , this way you are able to save it as shown in this video.
Thanks britec9 you are the only one that has saved the day from a problem nothing else solved.I followed your above instructions after using malwarebytes and others where PUPS kept coming back (hssdrv6 / swdumon with others ) Found them with your instructions in drivers and task manager blitzed them with delete now gone cheers fella thanks will certainly come back to you for anything else. Have you done a vid on pups ?
Juan Mulford that's correct, excluding file inside windows defender only excludes file from being scaned by windows defender but very helpful video Britec09 , many thanks!!
Can you make download (files/link) on video tutorial on any windows operations system (I Recommend to:Windows 8,Windows 8.1 enterprises, Windows 9 any system version and windows ten)?
hi , using win 8.1 after editing the hosts successfully i save the hosts file, but after a short time the changes i made disappear in the host file. i exclude the file in Windows defender but get still restored the hosts file to it's default.
I have a tiny problem... i've done everything exectly in the video, but after i save the hosts and i check it again, it is already rewritten for the original stuff, without the changes i just made minutes ago...what could be the problem?
very helpful, fixed my issue. except I adde dhsots into that file to enable access which was opposite of what you mentioned. Not sure why thats flipped in my company.
Very helpful video, but my main issue with editing the host file was that I first had to uninstall the free McAfee security trial that came with my computer....this might be a helpful video to make in conjunction with this one.
i can make change but i can't save the host file i mean the type is not .file but .txt and there is no .txt so that i can erase it what is the solution
ShadowTheOverseer Thanks, I needed this extra tip about running it from Notepad (as admin), I kept trying to right click and open with notepad which would not allow me to save it.
I'm trying to install (Ubuntu-Linux) in chromebook but I haven't success and would like to know if you can make a video how to install linux. thanks in advance, and keep it out with the good work with your videos
I've tried several tutorials on this and they all have the same problem: When I press SAVE, it instead brings up the SAVE AS window and when I try to override the HOSTS file with my edited one, it says the file is read-only. (I am on 8.1) Does anyone know how to stop this madness? Or change the "read-only" mode of the HOSTS file? (Sorry for long comment, by the way.)
+Elijah Budd I've been having your problem... recently upgraded from Win 8.1. now I'm on Win.10. What I did was follow this video, ADDED with turning OFF Win Defender, and ALL Firewall and Anti Virus. Then open Notepad via admin, open the file thru notepad, make the edit and simply click save. Nothing POPPED up! I months/weeks trying to solve this.
I am installing Oracle 12c on Windows 8.1 and have to make changes to the hosts file. Computer IPdaddress computername computername.localdomain What would the above do?
Other way around is to hit Windows-button, type Notepad and rightclick the Notepad-shortcut, select "Run it as Administrator". File>Open and find the HOSTS-file.
Britec09 thank you again. sorry this may not even relate to you, but I am really confused. "I have a windows 8.1 Pro, which is activated via KMS, when I try to update things it messes up, what is wrong? thanks in advance!
I have a computer which I have absolutely no admin permissions to at all. I have tried the net user command in cmd. I have also tried all the thing I can think of. So I wondered, how can I get admin right on a Windows 8 PC, without having any right? I don't have access to the bios either.
Britec Plz comment on it, I m using windows 8(Activated).Since i have Activated Kaspersky Anti Virus 2013, Windows Defender is not working at all, it says, Its no longer monitoring ur pc. I dont want to uninstall Kaspersky Antivirus, How can i Re- run my windows defender side by side as before?
I cannot confirm that the hosts file cannot be edited if it is not in Windows Defender on WIndows 8 but I assure you that on WIndows 7 this was not the case. In my case I do not use WIndows Defender so I omitted that step and also I dont use that trash program that is notepad and instead prefer a real application for working with my files. So anyway I just wanted to point out that I did not have to add anything to allow access through a firewall and instead all I had to do was run my editor (Notepad++) as administrator and I had full access to open, edit and save the hosts file. Its getting bad when companies like Microsoft feel the need to protect us from ourselves. It is this big brother attitude that says it is easier to just block the customer from what they might need rather than educate them. I prefer to be educated rather than protected. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Britec09...;)
Glad you watch and like my videos.

Can you please do a complete computer optimization/tips and tricks video course ?
I think Windows Defender in Windows 8 is Microsoft Security Essentials, so running side by side would not be a good idea, because you only want to run one antivirus at a time.
Thanks very clear. I did it simultaneously, perfect tempo.
Oh, man. Thank you so much for this video.

Good Info Brian. I don't run Windows 8 but my friends & relatives do so It's nice to know how to fix & tweak it when they break it. ;-).
