    Brian, Your timing of this Video couldn't have been better. Today is the day I feel the need for speed and am going to install my new 240 GB Kingston Hyper X 3K SSD. At $180 for the bundle kit with Acronis, I couldn't pass any longer. Your Video's are the best on the Tube. Much thanks, and Cheers. VT

    By damage Britec means this is because SSD drives have a read and write limit which is quite high but defragging a drive will be reading and writing all the time, meaning it will shorten the life span of the SSD drastically.

    Thanks for the kind words and support. and enjoy you new 240 GB Kingston Hyper X 3K SSD, it will fly.

  • @Britec09
    @Britec09  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    SSD have wear and tear write cycles which means the more you write to the drive you shorten the life of it. So by by doing these steps it reduces the amount of writes to that SSD drive.

    Hi Paul, Turn off Windows automatic defrag. Like SSDs and sometimes disabling super-fetch can improve performance. Hope this helps you out, all the best Brian

    Brian, here are more tips:
    For services you can disabled this ones:
    sc config wsearch start= disabled
    sc config defragsvc start= disabled
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters -> LargeSystemCache 0x0
    Delete these folders if it is disabled
    %windir%\Prefetch
    %programdata%\Microsoft\Search
    For small SSD's
    powercfg -h off
    Set SSD not in sleep:
    powercfg -x disk-timeout-ac 0
    powercfg -x disk-timeout-dc 0

  • @BlueDroneBlues
    @BlueDroneBlues 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    With the new SSD's you don't need to get too crazy here. Turning off your Sleep mode, Defrag off, turning off system restore, are good things too. A big thing would be going to your power configurations and setting the power options and setting it up for high performance. Many people that buy the newest SSD's are not going to know all this stuff and yet they are far more durable now then they use to be. :)

      Not if the OS is backed up on an external storage device and if the computer is configured correctly for the running OS, windows will not crash. But why toil to run crapware windows when Linux requires no bloatware?

    • @BlueDroneBlues
      @BlueDroneBlues 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a system image of windows 7 backed up on my TB hard drive. You really don't need or want system restore when you have an SSD. I mean of course mine can handle it. Just it opens up a lot of space on your SSD when your not using it. Its totally not necessary. :)

    This is a good idea too when running virtual machines on an SSD. VM's usually assume the current drive (virtual drive) is a hard drive, not SSD. Some VM's can tell the different, some can't. Good call Bri!

  • @CraigWard
    @CraigWard 10 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    In regards to the disk defrag tool, DO NOT disable this in Windows 8.1.
    8.1 recognises that it's dealing with an SSD and instead of defragmenting it will automatically Trim the drive for you.

    • @pecata01
      @pecata01 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      MrBrodernafluff If Windows 8/8.1 is recognizing SSD like HDD, go to Control Panel -> All Control Panel Items -> Performance Information and Tools and then run the assesement! Windows will look for the speed of the HDD/SSD and since SSDs do not have rotational speed, Windows can recognize which is SSD and which HDD!

Better get 1 good one instead of more less. i use NOD32 for years now, never had a virus or anything like that and i never ever used another one besides that one. My dad does and he always has shit on his PC.

    You should also make a tutorial on how to use a ramdisk for the windows temp folders and for the browser temporary cache. Not only you get insane write speeds but you also increase the SSD life expectancy. You can also leave like 8-10% of the disk as unallocated space. This operation is called over-provisioning and it makes the drive basic operations much faster. The SSD will get slower the less free space it has.

  • @TinyWords
    @TinyWords 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I personally would disagree with these suggestions.
    1. SSD's can use defrag but not as often as a mechanical drive. Defrag the SSD about once a month.
    2. To ensure that the TRIM is enabled check the setting in the BIOS to ensure AHCI is set on. No need to update the firmware in the SSD as suggested.
    3 Do not disable the superfetch or prefetch settings, doing so will tend to slow down the computer.
    4. Do not turn off the pagefile as some applications (Eg. Photoshop) require the virtual memory to run properly despite whether you have 16Gb of RAM or not.
    (Unless someone else has any convincing arguments)

    • @fern3436
      @fern3436 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The thing about defraging ssd's isn't that it will wear out your ssd, that is only a problem with old drives or if you defragged very frequently. But its not going to give you much boost in performance, because they already perform very well in accessing poorly organized data, compared to hdd's which are limited by reading from a head.

    • @vygag
      @vygag 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      What defraging does, simply said, its moving data on mechanical drive, literally, physically closer to each other so that the read/write needle would need to move shorter distance and that would increase hdd performance.
      On SSD, however, defrag have no positive effect since it doesn't have any moving part to which defrag would help shorten its moving distance, on contrary, it uses up read/write "limit" of SSD and just shortens its life.

    • @taunteratwill1787
      @taunteratwill1787 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      TinyWords You obviously have no idea about the workings inside an SSD therefore your "advice" to defrag an SSD is retarded at best! Then again you know better than SSD manufacturers. lol.

  • @ddd228
    @ddd228 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good information here. TURN off the scheduled defrag if you are running a SSD! Do it manually when you feel like it. Once a month is fine.

    • @SephirothDL
      @SephirothDL 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +ddd228 Or never since SSDs don't run like a HDD. They deliberately fragment as there is no seek time when attempting to access data. There is something wear leveling which is to deliberately fragment data around the SSD. This is because SSDs have a limited format/write life cycle so it is done to help the drive last longer.
      Golden rule, turn off fragmentation on SSDs for longevity.

    Hi, thank you for the video. By the way I think It is wrong to use "fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify 0" to enable TRIM.
    It should be "SET" instead of "QUERY" in the command.
    The correct command for enabling TRIM is " fsutil behavior set disabledeletenotify 0"

      +Yohasakura I think it will not create any problem to your computer. You just need to use the correct command again to active Trim functionality. A question: If I have a HHD 1 tera of 2 tera......defraging might become cumbersome, is it adviceable to partition them let's say in 200G or 300G partitions, that way I can defrag each partition individually only when needed and defraging becomes faster compared to defraging the whole thing in one swoop?

    why whould you switch off pagefiling? it is a backup for you pc, if you dont have pagefill, and you ram is full, you pc shuts down or freezes

    • @beachsandinspector
      @beachsandinspector 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      if you have 16gb or more a page file is wasted space on the ssd, I have 32Gb ram in my main PC and have yet to run out of memory, the most I have managed to use is some 28gb of ram and that is when I have far too many VMs open.
      In machines that have 16gb of ram I tend to limit the page file size depending on what the machine is going to be used for, a web / office type machine I turn the page file off, when the machine is going to render video I give it no more than 8gb of page file.
      So far I have had no problems what so ever.

    what does the superfetch and prefetch do?

    • @Zipzeolocke
      @Zipzeolocke 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      the description on super fetch says that it maintains and improves system performance over time, which poses the question why would I want to disable it? Especially if I'm only using an SSD as a boot drive

    • @DreamBeatsMuzic
      @DreamBeatsMuzic 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Every time you run an application in your PC, a Prefetch file which contains information about the files loaded by the application is created by Windows operating system. The information in the Prefetch file is used for optimizing the loading time of the application in the next time that you run it. SuperFetch attempts to predict which applications you will launch next and preloads all of the necessary data into memory. Its prediction algorithm is superior and can predict which next 3 applications you will launch by what time in a day.
      In short SuperFetch and Prefetch are Windows Storage Management technologies that provide fast access to data on traditional hard drives. On Solid State Drives they result in unnecessary write operations.

    That's fair enough, I have a plug in on my browser that stops any annotations etc so that'll be why I can't see it. It was just an observation. Cheers!

    What IF anything at all will the last change / tweak do to my SSD / System if I only have 12GB of Memory and not 16GB? Is it still worth it to do it or leave alone?

      Don't bother, it provides very little benefit with a SSD to be frank. Additionally, I would not turn off virtual memory as this can cause system instabilities and incompatibilities. If you have a good amount of RAM and don't frequently use it all up, you could try limiting it to a fixed 1 or 2 GB. The only advantage I can see is that you don't fill up your SSD with a massive paging file. A little one won't hurt. Keeping freespace available (or over provisioning) on your SSD allows it to do better garbage collection and improves the durability of the drive by not having to overwrite the same sectors constantly.

    the last step, what if, i have less than 16gb of memory and when you clicked properties for your computer, you have 2. also, mine says less than 400 megabyte instead of 200

      Chunky, if you have less than 16Gb AND you have a mechanical drive; set your page file to use the mechanical drive.
      1. Follow Brian's instruction to turn it off for the SSD, and reboot. (Not necessary, but best practice.)
      2. Go back in, and the set up a page file on the mechanical drive.
      3. Old school theory that some disagree with, yet I feel is proper; set the min and max equal to you RAM, so if you have 4Gb, set the min/max to 4096.
      3a. Do NOT let Windows manage it for you as it will grow and shrink and become fragmented. Doing it the way I described here will create a one chunk file that will not change in size.
      I cannot fathom why Brian left this out for those with less than 16Gb of RAM, but he may have covered it in an older video.
      4. One huge SSD saver not listed in this tutorial, turn off the hibernate file.
      5. Open an admin CMD window and type in POWERCFG -H OFF
      5a. This will remove the ability for your machine to go to sleep; however, that is a pretty useless feature unless you're on a laptop that you primarily run from the battery, IMHO any ways.
      5b. I have never bothered to look beyond M$ saying you cannot redirect the hibernate file to another drive like you can with the page file. So, I just turn it off and forget it.

    can that actually improve the read and write speeds for an SSD ?

      Sultan Kabboha NO, these are all measures to prolong the lifespan.

    You don't need 16gb ram to safely disable page files, I had it disabled on 4gb without running into any problems.
