I think you're one of the best clarinetists on youtube. My other favorite is the Earspasm channel

Your performance in this video was very clean and precise nice job.
The Key to speed is to do as little as possible. Pinkies should always be on a key lightly or very close if not activating the key. When not activating a key they can be prepositioned in advance for the next use. Other fingers should move as little as possible, never more than 1/2 inch above the tone hole. The more you move the longer the delay getting to the next note. Light touch reduces the time it takes for your muscles to react too. If I understand your explanation of your teachers advice I would disagree. Use no more force than required close the hole and make reliable seal. Too much force will lead to joint reversal instead of fingers in a gentle curve. Watch a virtuoso playing a part at light speed, the finger motion is very economical and minimalistic. Another factor to consider is timing. Ever wonder why you have to practice something a lot to get it clean? Keeping your finger motion small and consistent distance from the holes for all fingers makes the actuation delay time the same for all fingers. This is essential for precision at high speed. Once you master this you won't have to practice things to death to get them clean and right. Musical precision is all about consistency and mechanical precision.

Thanks John - thanks for the thoughtful and thorough comment - would agree too much force is equally bad.

My band director always says that my fingers are too tense and it causes them to lift up farther than I want. What should I do to try to fix that?
