I'm a Sapphire but I don't have a dreamy essence, I always struggled with ethereal. Thank you so much for mentioning Valkyries, it was very inspiring and a fantasy warrior is something I actually can do!
My magical inspiration as a moonstone that I am leaning into heavily right now is a ✨magical winter wonderland✨as we get into the height of winter. A style that is cozy and roomy (soft cashmere scarf and mittens), combining light and dark elements in an outfit. Layering. Still working on the finishing details though, learning by doing.
I do not understand that either! She is likable and knowledgeable and has an unique approach. It should work so well for millions of clicks. I guess it is because Rita is so driven by real content and not so much about algorithm pleasing
I’m thrilled to have found your channel (from Ellie Jean royden). You have made so much sense of my intuitive dressing and pulled me back to my center. I felt a little lost and out of touch with all the recommendations for my body type/coloring/essence and being bombarded with images. I’ve done a lot of questioning of who I am and what I want to express lately and I realized that I’ve always been on track but have new words to apply to my personal style
“Snowflake Princess”- Love it! A character that’s always come to me is raw, earthy Druid with a bit of powerful mystical warrior and aurora/ Briar rose from Sleeping Beauty 😂. I guess that would make my style keywords Wild, Powerful, Mystical, Sweet.
This is the style in my heart and the one I've been working toward cultivating for a long time. I've often wondered why I don't feel right in patterns, but abstract and paisley are okay...now I know! My "persona" is Moon Witch Princess...like a princess who has studied to become a witch who does Moon magic. Maybe that's TMI 😂
It's interesting how much senses of what's "magical" vary, like metal hardware, chainmail, leather with a feeling of armor feels very hard to me and also very magical, especially in contrast with more flowy soft textures. I guess maybe it's the sort of magical media and imagery you grew up with.
I agree, those things feel Ethereal to me, as well. I don't think Rita was disagreeing with that idea but more just promoting there needs to be some connecting factor between the elements. Like if the boots look like heavy punk aesthetic laminated boots with chunky soles, they will look from a different era AND of a different weight than a flowy fairytale dress. It's going to look juxtaposed and weigh down the magic. Now classic leather riding boots have more connectivity and make "sense" together. Chainmail looks fluid and detailed even though it's heavy and protective. It can almost look like fishscales with its high shine. I think it's all in the execution and the pairing. Like she said, kind of pick a theme and work from there.
Im so glad you did a video on this, because as a ruby key i have such a tricky relationship with ethereal/magical styling. On the one hand i love so many elements of it, like the colours, the intrigue, the textures and movement and feeling in touch with something "magic", but on the other hand it seems like its really hard to find examples of it that arent "turned up to eleven" to the point where it feels very costumey or like im putting on a persona to show off to other people, rather creating something thats authentic to me. Its so helpful to have a breakdown of specific elements and qualities that can create that feeling, but that i can experiment with bringing in in my own ways.
I love ethereal and fantasywear, and I always dream about wearing it and strive to wear it, because it makes me feel good beautiful and magical, but then reality kicks in and reminds me I am a teacher to 13 year olds, who would never ever take me seriously again if I showed up full elf mode at school... it would make my subject, art, even more out-of-this world as it already is through me and that feels wrong as I want to make art accessable to them. That being said I even discovered I have E in my essence blend as an ENC (its literally called the refined earth goddess) -- lucky me!? --, so I know it will look harmonious on me and not at all costumey, but I still feel selfconcious in situations like those. And also they're not very practical when working with woodworking machinery and clay and stuff. So I try to wear it in subtle touches or combined with something normal: antique japanese coin earrings - very ethereal in print and style, but a simple classic and known shape. A watercolor floral waistcoat - very ethereal and hobbit like, but easy to combine with normal jeans. Floaty and seethrough fabrics in the shape of a blouse or trousers. Fantasy inspired boots. Shimmery makeup. Etc Etc. I wish I had the courage to go beyond subtle, as I do dare with more edgy and grungy rockwear, but somehow the latter is more publicly accepted or so it feels. And at least a grungy rockwear outfit has a link to reality, which my students really need at that age and to me that feels like I am more approachable for them than with a full on otherworldy outfit. Its really difficult to combine grunge with ethereal as well, now that I think of it, as the grunge and rockwear is very grounded and thus the opposite. Edit: I wrote this before you metioned the style keys and I was already thinking I could be in the moonstone key, but now I'm pretty certain that I am on the right side at least and for the first time concidering sapphire as well. The struggles and insecurities you describe with both keys is almost an exact match to the struggles I wrote about haha Edit2: I think the alter character advice might be something to try out. After all, my teacher self is also a role that I play at work. Any more tips for that, to stay authentic when dressing yourself as an alter ego? Thanks!
Obviously you know your students far better than I do, but I still want to share in case this gives you some encouragement. I think it’s so beautiful that you work hard to make your subject accessible to all your students, and to make yourself approachable too!!! I think it’s possible that you have some students who actually are looking for an escape, even though reality is always in reach it’s not always gentle. Maybe that magic you want to express is also something they’ll appreciate? Fashion is an art form too so maybe these ideas are something you can explore with your students. For many people fashion is the most accessible form of art! It’s art we can carry with us through our day, for example a necklace is still there even if it has to be hidden under a school uniform. And even if this kind of style isn’t relatable to your students I think seeing someone build up courage to express themselves is probably something they can relate to at that age. Good luck with your teaching and with whatever else is happening in your life!
@@EmL-kg5gn thanks for replying, thats very sweet. I'll keep your words in mind! I think that's true and courage to look different is important. I think I already look quite different from my colleagues, and I think that's a good thing. It's balancing and looking for the frontiers in expressing oneself in a way that makes me feel authentic and at the same time is connecting or overdoing it and losing them, people thinking you're a bit too weird and not getting that part of art. I want to watch out for the latter.
Thank you so much for this video, dear Rita! It came just at the right moment and made something big click in my head. I realized this is exactly what's behind my current style struggles - I need to manifest much more ethereal into my style! You described it so well and it's exactly what I love on me and what feels so me, combined with some sturdier natural elements. I had already begun with some luminous pieces that I adore and that make me feel so good, but I didn't have a name for it. Now I do! I'm going to unleash my ethereal essence from now on and let this little light of mine shine! 😊 Especially in luminous colours, soft and shiny textures & shiny, glowy embellishments. I'm so happy! 💗💗💗 P.s. my persona is Light Shaman Lady 😊✨️💛
I love your smile, way of presenting, tight editing. I watch your videos all the way through even past my style key just to learn how the not-me quadrants approach things. As a Ruby I’ve been thinking about a Sunset vibe, the deep shades of twilight with a shot of color - the last rays of the sun. I don’t know if that’s magical or not but wanted to share. That’s an inner landscape that feels important. Thanks for making style so accessible!
Thank you for the advice on patience for Amethyst. I had to listen to it two times because i was literally too impatient to believe it right away 😂 but it does hit home ❤❤❤ Not to get discouraged when someone doesn't understand your outfit vision. Not to get discouraged when the vision is not conplete for lack of available shopping opportunities, for example. All true ❤
OMG I'm so excited for this! I love magical, ethereal style and I love that you talking about it as being for everyone (or anyone who is drawn to it); I totally agree and it's in line with my view of this aesthetic since it's such a huge umbrella that encompasses a wide variety of aesthetics and it's something I've explored extensively in my own style journey as an Amethyst key 💖🧚🏻
This helped so much! I realized I already corporate a lot of magic/ethereal in my wardrobe without knowing! I realized a while back I have ethereal essence alongside natural and dramatic, and found most recommendations for ethereal not really helpful. It's all 'white/as light as possible flowy dresses', and I don't like wearing dresses and white look often off on me. I'm a dark autumn, and darker colours look amazing on me, but I missed the darker colour recommendations! I'm definitely a ruby in this case, I love to base my outfits on nature, like an elemental elf; like I like to combine a dark greyish blue, or a dark grey, with black pants, or dark grey jeans with a dark greyish blue top, inspired by stormy skies and the sea in a storm. I love dark browns with burnt orange, inspired by the sunset in the forest, or a beige with brown, a moss green top with muted brown pants, both for a foresty feel, or black pants with a dark blue shirt with gold jewelry inspired by the night sky. I have a black flowy top with gold sparks sewn in that look amazing for a night sky inspired look.
I am blown away! Turns out that for the last 3 decades of adulthood ive been dressing Magical and didnt really twig. When you described all the elements I was, yep, yep..... I havent been able to work out my quadrant- possibly LEFT DOWN- but aspire up? Anyway - I realise that my lens is alway magical, and that was confusing me. ( others describe me that way, a lot, and I adore fantasy... its on my list of inspiration) I just dont want to do flowers everywhere anymore... I want more serious? to be taken seriously...I was thinking Dark Elf ( but with out the evil aspect) - but Valkyrie just sits so right ! Most of the outfits I have that flatter me but aren't quite hitting it.... Lack the magic! well I can fix that.
I have an ethereal/romantic face, a kibbe romantic/soft classic body and a true autumn color palette and I just put 1 and 1 together and realized that all that perfectly adds up to fairy core. ✨ 🐉🧚🧚♀️
I love this video!! I’m so happy I found your channel. I’m trying to figure out how to combine a dark forest & celestial magical ethereal vibe. Magical, ethereal with an edge. I love dark & natural colors. My brain just has trouble mixing these together & making it cohesive lol. But this video definitely helps 🖤💙🤎💚
As always Rita, digestible, insightful, and engaging content. Side note your skin is glowing and your eyes look especially clear and sparkly in this vid. Did you colour your hair?
This is so fun bc im worried i can't pull this off bc im not ethereal enough but like Thay's Crazy im a litteral fey being what else do you want from me lol😂😂
You want to just choose the type of thing you are looking for and use it as a search term on vintage or new sites eg "velvet camisole ruching" or "asymmetrical firinge cardigan" - when you're looking for niche things you need specific search terms
I'm a Sapphire but I don't have a dreamy essence, I always struggled with ethereal. Thank you so much for mentioning Valkyries, it was very inspiring and a fantasy warrior is something I actually can do!
Same here. I am delicate looking but my personality is much more intense than that so if I try to look cute on purpose it looks off.
Vampire Mermaid 🧛♂️🧜♀️
Florence and the Machine's songs are always a perfect inspiration ❤🩸

Calling out amethyst on our patience! lol you're right, if I do ethereal it's all the way.
I can't believe you channel hasn't blown up yet - you are so wise and intuitive about style. Very refreshing!

It doesn’t have to be feminine to be magical or ethereal
