My go to item i always get compliments on is a statement sweater. Whether colorful or not! I go bright with my sweaters, and when i dont go bright i wear sweaters with pom poms and sparkles. Love the video! Super happy i found you recently in my feed. Im local in Ohio as well so its amazing to find someone here too!
I have a vintage button down that is kind of silky feeling and covered in big, bright butterflies. I love to wear it when I’m feeling a little down because I know it’ll get compliments!! 🦋
Two of my belt buckles that I can switch out always get compliments. I have a Mona Lisa one and a Birth of Venus one and they make me feel like a fun museum employee.
Same, back like last year I was in the mall with my sibling and we were this, at least new to me, store when I spotted a girl, she looked maybe either my age or younger, tbh 😅 I'm kinds bad with guessing people's ages, anyway, so I spotted the girl and 😮 the feeling I got by seeing her whole look , it was all so well coordinated, from shoes to accessories and even hair, but here's the thing, I get nervous, so even tho I really wanted to say I like your outfit, I got nervous and kinda moved away from that area of the store she was at, but after I recovered, took deep breaths, and I walked up and said it, 😊
I still think about something that happened a few weeks ago. I was sitting at the bus stop, a girl strutted by with her headphones on, stopped, looked me at me then screamed 'I LOVE YOUR OUTIFT'. Without even blinking she started walking again wiggling around and shouting out the lyrics to the song she was listening too. I think that's my favourite ever 'i love your outfit' moment.
Once I was in an elevator with a 7 year old kid, I was going to a 80's theme party, she looked at me and said "you look amazing" with a straight face. I was soooo proud of myself
Kathleen, since you mentioned wearing a lot of interesting outfits over the years: I would love to see a video showing how your personal style has evolved over the years
Not clothes, but I love a statement lip color. Once while wearing lime green lipstick at the grocery store, two kids excitedly told their moms "that lady has green lips!" And if truly made my day!!!
I love it when little kids love my outfits!! I love wearing huge flowy tiered dresses and I love layering in winter with matching coats, earmuffs, gloves, scarves etc with a skirt flowing out from underneath. I also love wearing bold sunglasses that match my outfit and instead of taking them off outside building, I walk in and then talk them off right after I make my entrance just for dramatic effect haha. There have been a few times when I walked into a Walmart or somewhere similar and a little girl stopped and pointed at me and said to her mom “Wow, who is that!?” Those are my favorite moments!! Dressing for my inner child
I was in a local book/craft store last week and the guy behind the counter said he loved my dinosaur print t shirt dress. It's totally the kind of fabric that would be used to make toddlers pyjamas. So comfy. I went back in yesterday and he said "what? No.dinosaurs"? But he did appreciate my multi coloured abstract dungarees and my mystery animal cardigan. Could be sheep, llamas or dogs? I'm nearly 50 and my style is "small child runs through clothes rack blindfolded and wears what sticks" or "eclectic toddler grandma chic".😂😂
I work for Nordstrom and I'm always getting those "I love your outfit" comments from customers and it's great because it makes me smile and they open up to me helping them make style choices. Although when they ask if I got it at Nordstrom I have to be like "no, I got it from a thrift/yard sale/consignment/retro store" 😅.
Recently I went to a theatre wearing a cloak and some abstract makeup and I had three children stop dead in their tracks upon seeing me and one cashier in a grocery shop ask me why I was dressed like that. The BEST feeling. This is literally "I love your outfit" for alternative people.
Thank You, it’s thrifted! For sure, my toxic trait. I love wearing fun socks and/or embroidered nylon socks (people think they’re tattoos which is cool), changing out shoe laces, and playing with color for monochrome and/or color blocking outfits are my “i love your outfit” triggers.
My favourite styling choices are the ones with contrasting 'energies'. This is usually mixing 'hard' and 'soft', masculine and feminine, modern and vintage, etc. Which I guess is character dressing to a certain extent. I go a ton of compliments recently on what my partner called 'bad boy dandy': a frilly shirt with statement sleeves and beautiful embroidery details, with a leather jacket (both thrifted), black jeans, and platform trainers.
As a crocheter, having stuff that you made implemented into your wardrobe get's a lot of "I love your ______" and having the satisfaction of saying "thanks! I made it" is one of the best feelings in the world. l
One day i was walking to an antique store with my cousin when someone that was driving by stopped and rolled down their window to tell me that they are a photographer and that my "aesthetic is dope AF". I was wearing a bodysuit with oversized black jeans that has metal clasps all over them along with Timberlands and an oversized jacket that I sewed a bunch of patches on. Hands down the best compliment I have ever received.
It happened to me. Someone complimented me on my shoes at the Goodwill Bins. I thanked her and noticed she had a British accent, like me! we chatted a while and ended up exchanging numbers. We have been having coffee and going to second hand stores ever since!🤓
My hair has been some shade of rainbow sherbet for the last 2 years and that gets me the most compliments by far. Yesterday, someone yelled that they loved my hair from their minivan.
Omg! Yes! Colorful Hair is the TRUEST compliment magnet!!! do you get tired of people using it as an icebreaker? Or are you like “thanks I know 💁🏼♀️🌈” every time? Haha
@@KathleenIllustrated this I so true!! My hair has been pretty plain for a long time but I recently cut it shorter and dyed the front bits lavender, and I've definitely noticed more compliments in the past month! I still have mostly natural hair but a little pop of color can make all the difference sometimes
I got this really bright and colorful sweater that I was too scared to wear. I thought it was too much. But everytime I’ve worn it I got a compliment! Wear that crazy outfit you’ve always wanted to everyone!
I didn’t realize how much I used to live off of outfit compliments until I moved to a new workplace where no one seems to notice my rad style lol! Really makes me question if I’ve lost my edge 💔😂
the item i probably get the most compliments on is this one light pink wrap top with ruffles and huge poofy sleeves--i wore it recently to an art history class that i'm grading and one of the students wrote "to the TA: i love the shirt!!!" on their quiz. totally gave me the dopamine i needed to continue on when i was later slogging through 100+ quizzes at like 2am lol
In secondary school I moved to a whole new area where I knew no one, people would say “nice bag” “I like your shoes” at school, it wasn’t until a year or so after I joined the school I became friends with some of the more popular girls through my boyfriend at the time and I found out that when they said those things they were actually making fun of me and I had no idea, now if I get a compliment I’m always scared they’re just secretly making fun of me :/ working on not feeling that way though
Yeah, that's gonna happen when we standout. Most of them work at "fitting in" wearing the same styles, and brands as each other. Thus I dn't much care what they think . They've lost themselves to a group mentality. Low -key, I feel bad for them.
Argh Macie I’m so sorry that happened. People can be so cruel for no reason 💔 I’m really glad you’re here & part of this lil internet family. No haters allowed on my watch 😡💕
Hi Macie, When I went back to a high school reunion I found those who were awkward, the new kids, or outsiders in school were the most interesting, kind, and accomplished people there. The vapid popular girls hadn't changed 1% since high school. It was kind of pitiful. Keep shining in the world and you'll add joy and light!
Love this! I always tell people exactly how cheap I found things at thrift stores as soon as I get a complement 😅 and my current style vision is to ask my three year old self, "what do you want to wear?" The results have been extremely oversized, extremely cozy, mismatched rainbow patterns and I love it! I haven't gotten any compliments but I sure have felt happy 😁
A lot of the compliments I give are when a person puts intentional almost art direction into their outfit. Is there something matching? Is there a detail that is echoed as a motif? Is there an interesting colour palette or piece? And sometimes it's just my favourite aesthetics or pieces I have had my eye on having and see them in the wild haha
casual cosplay is my favorite thing !! i dont need to worry about 'oh do these patterns go together' because a goblin king would NOT care ! its also just fun bc u get to kind of play a character (says the theater kid)
i have a crochet bucket hat with mushroom embellishments that ALWAYS gets compliments, have literally made friends with ppl while travelling and around town by wearing that hat. bought it from a little local artist shop while on vacation in NZ but I also knit and crochet myself (and do some jewelry making) so my toxic trait is when someone compliments something I'm wearing and I feel the strong need to go "thanks I made it!"
I need the support group for sure...not only do I respond with "thanks, it's thrifted", I feel absolutely compelled to also state how much I paid for it and if I had coupon or found it on 1/2-off day 😝
I thrifted the most amazing chunky heeled boot yesterday. Neon blue jacquard fabric with pink floral detailing. I immediately changed into them and got several compliments while I ran errands.
i've been "character dressing" for decades. i never thought to call it that, though. lol i had this one job, back in the 90s, & after about two months i started talking to a coworker in a department that i would walk through to get to my desk every day. he just then put it together that i was the only person working in my department. he thought there were five different people working in my area, based on the various people he saw passing through his workspace. LOL it really blew his mind that all those people were just me. i embrace all of your tips, kathleen, bright colors, unusual color combos, statement pieces, mixing eras, interesting jewelry, & noteworthy shoes. i'd have to say my favorite thing that i wear nearly every day is a brooch. i have a vast collection & i still feel the desire for more. 😹 i have them for all occasions & seasons. & they range from very expensive to literally found on the street. life is short, celebrate the day with a wonderous outfit!!
My favorite surprise-and-delight item is a midi dress with a classic silhouette but it's printed with rainbow dinosaurs. It has Miss Frizzle vibes and people really are always delighted by it! Also I love bold outerwear--my favorites are my electric violet trench coat, and a 60's-esque chartreuse jacket with really big gold hardware.
I needle felted a crocodile on a sweater. On sleeve is the tail and the other is face. The crocodile is green and pink and sparkle. It was a lot of work but worth it.
I work in a charity shop and I have always wanted to wear headscarves but I was too nervous… But the first time I wore one to work I was complemented so much it was scary and I didn’t know how to react but it brought me so much joy because I was being my authentic self. Now I wear whatever I want and the old lady regulars love seeing my outfits. It’s great to be seen. Don’t let depression or anxiety snuff your flame.
You’re so right about the shoes I chalk painted some of my old boots bright blue and got tons of compliments. One of my friends from Uni said that the first impression I made on her was “that’s the girl with the cool boots” and I love that.
The color orange. Never fails. For some reason you can wear any other bright color and not get half the attention that orange brings. And if you wear orange platforms with an orange outfit (especially orange and black)... be prepared
@@helpfulcommenter I wonder how many people avoid wearing color combinations they love because they're afraid of snarky comments like that. It won't stop me and I know you're kidding but it's something to think about. It would be a shame. People have so many reasons why they feel they "can't wear" a certain color.' It looks like a sports team", "it's like Halloween" ' it's too bold" etc. If a certain color combination makes you feel good, enjoy it.
I have a pair of black gauchos that are super comfy and my favorite way to wear them is with a white fitted button down, a brown, striped sweater vest I knit, black fleece lined tights, scrunched up socks and black platform loafers (which my mom calls my Herman Muenster shoes) sometimes I add a brown beret and a tan wool coat. My boyfriend says I look like a Pokémon trainer and I get complimented on the whole outfit all the time! My favorite was when a teen at the movies told me she loved my outfit because something about getting complimented by a teen makes me feel cool 😎
On a pre-pani times trip to Portland I scored the PERFECT Levis jean jacket. And it fits like a glove (as a plus sized lady this was such a happy moment for me since thrifting cool pieces that fit is hard)! AND it was $40 and practically brand new. I get compliments all the time on it and I always feel so bad letting them know that I found it so far away. Right now it's my only statement piece but I'm hoping to find more cool items in the future. Love you videos Kathleen! Stay stinky!
I will need to join your toxic trait support group!! 🤣🤣 yeah, “I thrifted this!” is pretty much all I say these days too, but that’s also a testament to how I think at least 80% of my wardrobe now has been thrifted and it makes me SO happy!
My absolute favorite item I've thrifted that always gets a compliment is this black sweater with a fake lime green collar attached that also has black polka dots! I also recently found a real black fur coat for 10 bucks! What an insane find! I can never help myself, I always tell people when I thrifted something.
I 100% always have to share when something is thrifted, you're not alone! and I think we can include hair styles into this conversation! It's a great way to express oneself and shine in their own unique way. This whole video has my wheels turning and thinking of all the ways this applies to my style! Thanks for sharing!
Recently, I've gotten into crochet and that's been my attention getter recently! I like doing zany patterns and then zhuzh it up a bit with my own ideas. Most recently, it's been my "head in the clouds" beanie. Sky blue ribbed beanie with all different shaped clouds all around it ☺️☁️
"Thank you, I thrifted it" is cool BUT I am very much a handmade person so I have a ton of accessories that me or my friends made and saying "Thanks, I/my friend made it" feels SO good it's crazy
I work at a particularly kid-friendly museum, so I’m lucky because I have a reasonable amount of freeedom with how I dress. I have a uniform that I have to wear in specific circumstances, but on most of my workdays I’m encouraged to wear fun patterns and colors and express myself as much as I want. Let me tell you, _nothing on this earth_ brings me more joy than when kids like my outfit. Also, this sounds stupid, but once I became a teenager/young adult, I kinda forgot that you could layer your clothes for fashion reasons. Kids wear all these cute jumpers and overalls and other layered outfits! As an (alleged) adult, I get so many compliments when I do something as simple as throwing a short sleeve t-shirt on under a dress.
My hot tip is to dye your clothes! I think procion dyes are the easiest as they don't require heat. My boring medium wash jeans are now blurple with bright yellow accent thread. That olive green tee that was a bad shade for me is now the prettiest dusky dark rose. All white embroiderd tunic? Get you some scarlet with white embroidery. You never know exactly what you will get because every item takes the dye differently but you are for sure getting a really unique and often more expensive looking item than you started with. It also refreshes and brightens up clothing that might be looking tired.
I always say Thankyou I thrifted it and it only cost x amount! lol can't help myself. I am probably not your demographic but I am 66 and have always loved what they called "eclectic " clothes. Back in the mid 70's while in high school Elton John was hot and he wore a pair of platform silver shoes. OMG I wanted them so bad. There was no way I was going to find them even in the big city. I went to Toronto and found a pair of great platforms and got some silver model paint and painted them. You can not imagine how much attention these shoes got! I still remember the compliments.
I have a sweater with strawberries all over it. It's so different i was apprehensive about buying it. But every time I wear it to work I get more compliments on it than any other outfit.
I'm not entirely sure why I decided to watch this (but I do know I'll be watching more!), because I almost have, like, the opposite issue? I _love_ bold, quirky, etc. fashion elements, but I am SO incredibly, painfully, cripplingly shy, so as much as I appreciate a compliment, the interaction always gives me anxiety!
We don’t use shoe clips anymore because the fashion industry convinced people that there’s a huge difference between a black Mary Jane and a black Mary Jane *with a bow*. It’s honestly amazing.
Recently thrifted a pair of platform boots where the zipper crosses over the top of the shoe down to the toes. They match in with my more subtle goth style, but have already received a handful of compliments from two outings :)
my brightly coloured wardrobe and all my cat accessories always get compliments! My favourites are my sneaky small cat jewelry pieces because you have to look closely to see, or bags that you don't think are cat-related but surprise! It has ears :D
Yesterday I was at the dr's office and this lady came in wearing a sleeveless jean jacket ABSOLUTELY COVERED in colorful patches from different states and countries, and coin fringe, and my mom and I were mesmerized by it. She said it was her "travel jacket" and that her daughter hates it and wants her to get rid of it. 🤣 It's okay, we need some maturity to come back around to loving semi-cheesy things. Congrats on your subscriber count (omg), new sponsors, and that Pinocchio necklace (😍).
1:05 BRUH, THAT'S MY GO-TO ICE BREAKER! I'm autistic and have found that "Oh, I love your ___. It makes me think of ___" is the PERFECT ice breaker. The "Oh," gives you the chance to get their attention so they don't miss the first part of you speaking (it's also a filler if I don't know their name 🙃), and the "It makes me think of ___" makes what I saying sound less like a one off speaking just to speak/small talk (😝) by showing that I gave actual thought to what I'm saying ✨✨✨
ooOoo, very much looking forward to the kind of mischief a well-paid-for-her-TH-cam-labor Kathleen can come up with! love being a part of your channel growth: you deserve the love! also, I did in fact complete my first applique item of clothing for my friend’s bday - a little running duck with some upcycled accent fabric. it came out very 80s and they loved it. couldn’t have done it without the inspo from you and your “just try it” attitude.
I love love LOVE telling cool-looking people how cool they look. I love the reactions. So cute. Makes my day. We need to give and receive more compliments. Makes the world a better place, frankly. So yeah. Girl? YOU are helping us making the world a better place. :D
i just found Kathleen's channel like a week ago and i already binge watched ALL her videos and now im absolutely obsessed with thrifting!!! (well, op-shopping as we call it here in Australia) Im still working on building a wardrobe i love, and Kathleen has super duper encouraged me to go op-shopping instead of buying clothes new! Which has helped because my personal style cant really be found in a lot of common fast fashion stores, and if it is its often pricey. So thanks so much Kathleen! im saving the planet, saving my money, and getting unique clothes i love all at once :) also i loooooove your style and aspire to be you one day - you deserve far more subscribers!!
Aw this makes me feel better as someone who spontaneously tells people I love their outfits. Usually it's the artist brain taking over and I'm glad if it can make some people's days
I was walking past a group of teens who were not so quietly mocking my wolf hat, not loud enough for me to call out but i could hear everyword. One kept telling then to shush and I assumed she was embarrassed about their rudeness though I stopped caring about means girls because if I didn't I'd go mad. She broke away after a minute and, beat red, told me she loved my hoodie and asked where I got it. I'm getting a lot of compliments on a floral midi skirt I got from a thrift shop. Looks like I'm going to ladies day at the races. My favourite people are those who compliment my wolf hat because it's a bit mad and i love it. I wore clip on earrings for a play and stuck them on early in the day so wore thrm about seven hours. So much pain when i took them off. Never ever again.
i have this tiny y2k beaded bag that has made me literally...... so many friends bc people feel compelled to come up and say they love my bag! we love a little ice breaker piece!
I have pink hair and I get a lot of compliments on it. It’s really nice because I was really intentional about the shade and tone of it and it paid off. I was so nervous it was going to look like a cry for help but it feels very harmonious with my external features, my style, and how I feel about life. I feel the most like myself with pink hair and it’s nice to know others see at least a little bit of what’s on the inside no matter what level of self expression I’m on for the day. Before, with my natural dark brown hair and my RBF, people were less apt to compliment me or talk to me unless it was creepy old men trying to make a move. I felt unapproachable and intimidating, despite being years out of my goth phase and in my rainbow era. Whereas now it seems more people are much more interested in talking to me. It’s harder to be in my head out in public and to be ashamed of myself when I know complete strangers can appreciate me for this little thing. It’s hilarious and uplifting to hear people start talking about Barbie with their friends when I walk into a room. It might be a shallow reason, but it’s easier to like myself when I have evidence that I at least seem somewhat interesting to people. I feel less alone compared to the complete invisibility I felt before.
I get "i love your hair" so often that i give the passive "thank you" as to when someone compliments my jacket or my overall outfit, i immediately give an over enthusiastic "thank you" and say how cheap i got it for or if it's thrifted lol 😂
as someone who gets told At Least once, normally more, each time i go out : Layers! truly! i normally am wearing at least 2 skirts layered with each other (sometimes trousers under a tulle one) and at least two tops too, think something fitted and longsleeve under something baggy and sheer. people are often surprised when i tell them its actually two (or more) things, i like to imagine it they wonder about trying it out too. im also not afraid of doing things like wearing tights upside down as a top (a trick stolen from wearing fishnets in my full goth days) or tucking a thin scarf into a belt around my waist to flow and add contrast! i get most of my compliments when i wear a really statement tulle skirt with gold squares all over it. truly my biggest piece of advice is to wear clothes without hesitation? pretend youre an alien and you dont know the "rules" about what goes with what, just that humans like to have certain parts covered.
Oh my God! I am so obsessed with your channel for me to be here 50 seconds after it was uploaded. I love your channel. It has brought me a lot of good inspiration and you're so fun. :)
i have a vintage corduroy orange bomber jacket that is absolutely decked out in pins and it is genuinely the best conversation starter ever. If you like talking to people but aren't the best at initiating or general conversation it's honestly the best way to get that flowing. I've met some incredibly cool people, including a well known artist from a convention who i'm now friends with after a conversation about how he used to collect pins from baseball games he went to when he was a kid with his dad, and how he still has them in a box in his attic. And a vintage rick hansen pin has let me bond with a lot of old folks who compliment it and note how their surprised i even know who he is. Plus the type and variety of buttons you put on it determine who will comment on them, for example pride pins might start conversations with other queer people, or vintage with vintage enthusiasts and older people, i personally like to have a variety from all sorts of places and all sorts of types. Just, best conversation starter ever is a cool jacket just covered in pins and patches.
I love collecting vintage or handmade statement pieces and matching them with others already in my wardrobe~ My big winners have been my leather jacket that I've covered in pins and patches, my Doc Martens that a friend painted lightning on then rethreaded with matching ribbons, a pair of black hightop Concerse with neon green ghosts, a neon green silk button up, a black jumper with GORGEOUS embroidety work, and a black velvet overall skirt. Apart from the jacket, everything was secondhand or gifted. ^_^
I was at an ABBA themed dance party recently and someone in the bathroom excitedly asked me "where did you find Wranglers?!" and I was very excited to tell them I got them at a thrift store for $5!!
@@_lenny_____leonardo ok well that's probably a crucial plot point to make the movie make sense, why was it left out of the script! imagine the reviews! producer gonna be maaad.
I have a pair of orange bell bottoms that I get complements on all the time. They are bright and eye catching and also nostalgic for some people of the older generations.
Anything orange is happy! I saw a woman with an orange wool jacket on the Metro on a yucky day and said "You're a smile maker today!" Everyone nearby nodded and smiled.
My awkward “thanks I thrifted it” moment is always about earrings. I’m a beadwork artist and anytime someone compliments the earrings I’m wearing I will blurt out “thanks, I didn’t make these!” I guess my brain just assumes that they think I’m wearing my own earrings and want to give credit to the other artist lol 😅
"Character outfits" I used to do entire themed weeks in high school 😂 currently my clothing doesn't really have a lot of common threads rn though, so my number of outfits are verrrry limited 😅 trying to find stuff that matches more things so I can make an outfit out of literally anything. I have a skirt that I have yet to find a single top to go with 😭 I'd love to dress like my imaginary characters again someday 😩
Every time I wear my leopard vest, people can't look away and start complimenting my outfit :D best feeling PS: It originally belonged to an elderly lady.
I have a pair of hand-painted red, yellow, and powder blue cowboy boots I thrifted a few years ago! Hands down one of the best things I’ve ever found, and people always end up chatting with me over them
I love getting "i love ur vibe", i'm obsessed when stuff matches my aesthetic i like black and red stuff so everything is cordinated and peopel know that, a freind of me sees somthing and she tells omg if u were a (the last time it was a)bag u would be this bag or something like that it always makes my day to hear that stuff xd
When I actually started dressing how I wanted and not how I saw my peers dress I got those compliments A LOT more! I also love saying it to people I find cool! Their face lights up! :)
My theory with shoes is that they're generally more expensive than other clothing items so people usually go for simple/neutral ones, so if you have more fancy ones they stand out more. It's similar to haircuts/colour, they demonstrate commitment to the look.
I would describe my style as light cottagecore. Usually, i dont wear too frilly dresses and no corsets (i with i could though!) I wear long skirts and vintage inspired dresses and shoes. Now, i just started in a very old fashioned office. People there dont dress in suits but they also dont really dress up. I however dont see the need to dress down for everyday life. As long as youre comfy, all should be allowed. My coworkers started complimenting me this week, saying i have great style and a lot of guts to wear a milkmaid dress to the office haha but to me, style, beauty and colour needs to exist around me or else ill feel totally anonymous and lifeless. You should never be afraid to dress up for everyday! Just put on that frilly dress or the 80s jacket or the multilayered skirt if it makes you feel good, you'll radiate positivity and there will always be someone who loves your style
I can’t stop myself when I see a cool look, a unique accessory, a gorgeous color, a stylish hat... Whatever it is, I want them to know! You win the OOTD award! Great job! 🏆😃🎉
lost my mindd while you were talking about the shoes lol. i have a pair of platform docs that have been my baby since like 2020 and i had gotten purple and yellow laces having heard about lace code (i realize it's not really considered relevant anymore but ehhh yeah) and then while doing some painting event i accidentally splattered them in watered down white paint. people freaked out but i looked at them with those flecks of white and honestly, it was a real life pete the cat scenario. i kept walking along and singin my song :) i've gotten loads of compliments for those ever since along with my battle jacket and some more specific "character outfits." i have this long colorful coat thing (if you can call it that) and wore it with an orange witch hat i got in salem and these spirited away earrings and the boots and somebody who worked at moe's told me it was like i customized my character and i had never felt so honored. i dress so weird and it feels amazing
One thing I’ve been wearing lately that does get a lot of attention are my doll-like shoes. They’re kinda like Mary janes, but no one wears them where I live, because most people go for simpler sandals. So it gets some attention and I get a lot of compliments on them.
i hot glued a ton of fake flowers to my backpack and i get SO many compliments. i think people just don't expect whimsy and delight and personality from a backpack! they tend to be pretty boring, which makes sense because they're supposed to be practical (and yes, i do have to do repairs every now and then, and sometimes a leaf will get caught in one of the zippers), but decorating everyday objects to suit your tastes sparks so much joy and i can hardly go anywhere without hearing "oh, i love your backpack!" of course it doesn't have to be fake flowers. i just happened to have a ton because of reasons (fyi michaels says they're half off 100% of the time but at the end of the season they're usually actually on clearance) but paint and embroidery are always solid options and you can hot glue pretty much anything onto whatever you want. if you spent enough time collecting them you could stick a bunch of soda tops to something for that chainmail vibe. i think that'd be sick but i don't drink soda or know anyone who does frequently so i just have the ones i've picked up off the ground. or some like tinsel-y stuff could be cool. lots of buttons. little cogs. some tasteful fake leaves. crayons (target the paper and make sure the glue's not too hot). some sort of cute little plastic thing. anything! the world is your oyster and hot glue is your best friend! you could also sew some of these if you're willing to spend a lot of time but hot glue is fast (things will break off but you can glue them back on again)
I get a compliment almost every time on my futuristic silver shoes - guys, girls, kids, adults, etc. My silver pants get great compliments too. People also love fabrics that seem to change colors and lots of sparkles. Don’t be afraid to splurge a little on a statement piece - the compliments are worth their weight in gold as long as you truly love it.
I have a pair of jeans that I made a few months ago- lots of patchwork, colorful top stitching. And, I get so many compliments on them and honestly my toxic trait is that I am too awkward to tell people that I made them with my own grubby little fingers
my toxic trait is the thrill i get from whenever someone says "i like your outfit- especially 'insert piece here'!" and i can go- "thanks! I MADE IT!!" like some sort of mad scientist
That statement, "Thanks, I thrifted it" resonates with me so much. My wardrobe is 99% thrifted vintage. Majority of them are blazers/jackets/coats. They're easy to dress up in any occasion.
Because of this video, I just remembered I dreamed about thrifting last night… and now I’m sad I can’t visit my literal dream thrift store in the waking world 🥲 great video by the way 🖤 I loved the intrigue section
I have these Franken-pants that I made out of a few pairs of shorts that I cut up and sewed together. I love them so much and they always get me so many compliments
Pretty much everything I have is thrifted & I LOVE unique, odd & vintage items so..... yes, I always answer a compliment by telling them it's thrifted 😁
Alright it's time to brag: what items in your closet ALWAYS get compliments?! 👂
besides wearing the color yellow i have an old hand-me-down floor length leather coat from my grandma which ppl seem to love
Two of my belt buckles that I can switch out always get compliments. I have a Mona Lisa one and a Birth of Venus one and they make me feel like a fun museum employee.
My Ersa Fibers grid top!
I’ve started TELLING people that I love their outfit when I can
You’re the best kind of person, joy!!!
@@KathleenIllustrated I figured I should also dish them out once I realised that I can give someone that goblin energy in their day!
Thank you for spreading more joy! And goblin energy. :3
Same, back like last year I was in the mall with my sibling and we were this, at least new to me, store when I spotted a girl, she looked maybe either my age or younger, tbh 😅 I'm kinds bad with guessing people's ages, anyway, so I spotted the girl and 😮 the feeling I got by seeing her whole look , it was all so well coordinated, from shoes to accessories and even hair, but here's the thing, I get nervous, so even tho I really wanted to say I like your outfit, I got nervous and kinda moved away from that area of the store she was at, but after I recovered, took deep breaths, and I walked up and said it, 😊
😊🙏💗
I still think about something that happened a few weeks ago. I was sitting at the bus stop, a girl strutted by with her headphones on, stopped, looked me at me then screamed 'I LOVE YOUR OUTIFT'. Without even blinking she started walking again wiggling around and shouting out the lyrics to the song she was listening too. I think that's my favourite ever 'i love your outfit' moment.
I feel like this could just as well have been me 😅😂
or me lol
Are you a John Green character?
She was feeling herself and feeling you, what a beautiful thing 🥰
If that is you in the picture, you have a interesting unique style ❤😊
Once I was in an elevator with a 7 year old kid, I was going to a 80's theme party, she looked at me and said "you look amazing" with a straight face. I was soooo proud of myself
Yes!! The truest & most authentic compliment one can receive! What a treasure 😂
😄... after my husband, that tickles me most when I get a compliment from a kid.
Kathleen, since you mentioned wearing a lot of interesting outfits over the years: I would love to see a video showing how your personal style has evolved over the years
I second this!
I agree!
Ooh oh good one! It's fun to look back and see your fashion soul throughout your life just being reincarnated
Yes yes yes!!! ❤
Yeah !
Not clothes, but I love a statement lip color. Once while wearing lime green lipstick at the grocery store, two kids excitedly told their moms "that lady has green lips!" And if truly made my day!!!
So cool!!!!! I love this 💚💚💚
I love it when little kids love my outfits!!
I could make an effort but I don’t get complimented much
I was in a local book/craft store last week and the guy behind the counter said he loved my dinosaur print t shirt dress.
I am a few years older and can agree with that style
I love that! 'eclectic toddler grandma chic'. I'm aiming for 'slutty victorian grandma on the run from the law'
Thank you for your service (working retail at a franchise clothing store).
Omg why did I never thought of embroidering nylon socks! This is genius
For me it’s thank you it’s vintage! 😂
Style Icon detected! 🤩
I tried to think of something funny but all I came up with was “Yeemo (Yeehaw Emo)” anyways I LOVE a good embroidered shirt.
@@AKA253heh, that's the second time i've seen someone mention a fusion of emo and country today
We have been having coffee and going to second hand stores ever since!🤓
I absolutely have "I thrifted this"-itis, to the point that baristas at my regular coffee shop will ask if I've found anything at Goodwill lately
❤
Just smile and say "Thanks so much!" Slay them with kindness.
Best comment. Yes.
i have a crochet bucket hat with mushroom embellishments that ALWAYS gets compliments, have literally made friends with ppl while travelling and around town by wearing that hat. bought it from a little local artist shop while on vacation in NZ but I also knit and crochet myself (and do some jewelry making) so my toxic trait is when someone compliments something I'm wearing and I feel the strong need to go "thanks I made it!"
That is amazing.
So glad to see someone else into brooches! In my experience, they can really be a 'conversation starter.'☺
And if you wear orange platforms with an orange outfit (especially orange and black)... be prepared
be prepared..... for halloween?
jk :)
I made a pumpkin hat. It's very cute. I get compliments every time I make it. From strangers. It makes me very anxious. 😅
haha!! You’re too powerful - the world MUST tell you how cute it is!! 🎃
That is a POWERFUL multi-faceted convo starter and I love it! I’ll try to use it, soon 💕 thanks for teaching me!

also, I did in fact complete my first applique item of clothing for my friend’s bday - a little running duck with some upcycled accent fabric. it came out very 80s and they loved it. couldn’t have done it without the inspo from you and your “just try it” attitude.

i just found Kathleen's channel like a week ago and i already binge watched ALL her videos and now im absolutely obsessed with thrifting!!!
I love that you call them Op Shops down there! It means opportunity, yes?

this is the first time i’ve heard of character dressing, but that’s literally how i create every single outfit i wear
I LOVE responding to a compliment with "thanks I made it!" because I usually have 🎉
I have pink hair and I get a lot of compliments on it.
The few times a stranger has complimented my outfit it always makes my day
as someone who gets told At Least once, normally more, each time i go out : Layers! truly! i normally am wearing at least 2 skirts layered with each other (sometimes trousers under a tulle one) and at least two tops too, think something fitted and longsleeve under something baggy and sheer. people are often surprised when i tell them its actually two (or more) things, i like to imagine it they wonder about trying it out too.
im also not afraid of doing things like wearing tights upside down as a top (a trick stolen from wearing fishnets in my full goth days) or tucking a thin scarf into a belt around my waist to flow and add contrast! i get most of my compliments when i wear a really statement tulle skirt with gold squares all over it.
truly my biggest piece of advice is to wear clothes without hesitation? pretend youre an alien and you dont know the "rules" about what goes with what, just that humans like to have certain parts covered.
The best is getting to say "Thanks! I made it!" in response to a compliment! Esp b/c the clothes I make are the ones that are truly my style.
Oh my God! I am so obsessed with your channel for me to be here 50 seconds after it was uploaded. I love your channel. It has brought me a lot of good inspiration and you're so fun. :)
You’re so quick on the draw!!! Thanks so much for being here - means so much to me! 🥹💕
@@KathleenIllustrated I suprised myself. Btw I find wearing yellow gets me a lot of compliments makes me feel like a lamp in a world of moths! :D
i have a vintage corduroy orange bomber jacket that is absolutely decked out in pins and it is genuinely the best conversation starter ever.

"hold on to your capes." LOL you made my day. 😹😻😻😻
That’s amazing, keep em on their toes
"Character outfits" I used to do entire themed weeks in high school 😂 currently my clothing doesn't really have a lot of common threads rn though, so my number of outfits are verrrry limited 😅 trying to find stuff that matches more things so I can make an outfit out of literally anything. I have a skirt that I have yet to find a single top to go with 😭 I'd love to dress like my imaginary characters again someday 😩
Every time I wear my leopard vest, people can't look away and start complimenting my outfit :D best feeling
PS: It originally belonged to an elderly lady.
I wear a lot of tulle skirts, and although I've had 'I love your outfit', I've also been asked if it's my wedding day way too many times 😂😭
Great job! 🏆😃🎉
I definitely do the "thanks! I made it!" and their 😲 face is the best 😊
I watched this video this morning and in the 4 hours I've been up I got 3 compliments on my skirt and 4 on my bag. Thanks for the good vibes 😊😊
lost my mindd while you were talking about the shoes lol. i have a pair of platform docs that have been my baby since like 2020 and i had gotten purple and yellow laces having heard about lace code (i realize it's not really considered relevant anymore but ehhh yeah) and then while doing some painting event i accidentally splattered them in watered down white paint. people freaked out but i looked at them with those flecks of white and honestly, it was a real life pete the cat scenario. i kept walking along and singin my song :) i've gotten loads of compliments for those ever since along with my battle jacket and some more specific "character outfits." i have this long colorful coat thing (if you can call it that) and wore it with an orange witch hat i got in salem and these spirited away earrings and the boots and somebody who worked at moe's told me it was like i customized my character and i had never felt so honored. i dress so weird and it feels amazing
I'm so happy you love the pallet earrings ❤ they sat in my personal collection for far too long and I'm so happy to see them so loved ❤
One thing I’ve been wearing lately that does get a lot of attention are my doll-like shoes. They’re kinda like Mary janes, but no one wears them where I live, because most people go for simpler sandals. So it gets some attention and I get a lot of compliments on them.
i hot glued a ton of fake flowers to my backpack and i get SO many compliments. i think people just don't expect whimsy and delight and personality from a backpack! they tend to be pretty boring, which makes sense because they're supposed to be practical (and yes, i do have to do repairs every now and then, and sometimes a leaf will get caught in one of the zippers), but decorating everyday objects to suit your tastes sparks so much joy and i can hardly go anywhere without hearing "oh, i love your backpack!"
of course it doesn't have to be fake flowers. i just happened to have a ton because of reasons (fyi michaels says they're half off 100% of the time but at the end of the season they're usually actually on clearance) but paint and embroidery are always solid options and you can hot glue pretty much anything onto whatever you want. if you spent enough time collecting them you could stick a bunch of soda tops to something for that chainmail vibe. i think that'd be sick but i don't drink soda or know anyone who does frequently so i just have the ones i've picked up off the ground. or some like tinsel-y stuff could be cool. lots of buttons. little cogs. some tasteful fake leaves. crayons (target the paper and make sure the glue's not too hot). some sort of cute little plastic thing. anything! the world is your oyster and hot glue is your best friend! you could also sew some of these if you're willing to spend a lot of time but hot glue is fast (things will break off but you can glue them back on again)
my favorite thrifted piece is a vintage silk nightgown with a HUGE lace and beaded collar 10/10 always thrift
These jeans sound awesome!
My doctor said this to me last week. First time I've gotten a compliment like that and I loved it lol
my toxic trait is the thrill i get from whenever someone says "i like your outfit- especially 'insert piece here'!" and i can go- "thanks! I MADE IT!!" like some sort of mad scientist
Years ago I turned my grandmother’s robe into a dress. People usd to love it. The flower pattern and the grey-green background looked so vintage...
Thank you for keeping goths in mind Kathleen, we love it
I’ve wondered that too!
I get "you smell good" Quite often and as someone who works with scent a lot, I love it!
My go to is sparkly or funky shoes.... and hot pink or leopard print as my neutral color.
Oh... and one of my colleagues called my "go to style" as grown up or professional grunge. Lol
That statement, "Thanks, I thrifted it" resonates with me so much. My wardrobe is 99% thrifted vintage. Majority of them are blazers/jackets/coats. They're easy to dress up in any occasion.
Because of this video, I just remembered I dreamed about thrifting last night… and now I’m sad I can’t visit my literal dream thrift store in the waking world 🥲
great video by the way 🖤 I loved the intrigue section
oh no!!! what was it like??? infinite floors of vintage goodness? perfectly curated racks of GOLD?!
(thank you so much for watching!!!)
