      @@Beemmeupz no that’s not the difference between ed’s and crash diets. less than 6% of people with eating disorders are classified as medically underweight and weight is not the criteria for an ed. The differences between the two are mental because Ed’s are mental illnesses. What makes them different is someone’s relationship with food and with weight. It’s also not about physical health because crash diets are unhealthy as well and Ed’s can sometimes have horrible health consequences but thats not a requirement what they do all share in common is the horrible mental consequences

    In particular for boys when someone isn’t underweight disordered eating often goes unnoticed and gets packaged as an “intense diet”. Depends on your school. Schools in Europe have everything North Americans complain aren’t taught in schools..

      @@brin1034 yeah I mean I don't know about the rest of Europe but I didn't learn this stuff in my school in the uk. We got told the usual eat less sugar move more as far as health went and received petty much no information about eating disorders beyond the stereotypes in media. I think particularly conferring the rise in ed's in the uk in the last year even there should be some education on what an unhealthy relationship with food can look like warning signs of this and sustainable nutrition advice so the many teenagers who may fall into ed's due to a decision to get fit can avoid them.

    • @ThumpRat
      @ThumpRat ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@isabellag2371 Beyond overeating, eating disorders are largely social contagions among teenagers. There was a story about how in Hong Kong, a popular girls magazine wrote about an American girl suffering from bulimia. Within months, suddenly there was an epidemic of young girls with rapid onset eating disorders. The over-pathologising of the human condition has undoubtedly been a negative for society, there should be sensible advice on nutrition for kids but spreading 'awareness' about mental health and eating disorders just leads to more sick kids.

    • @isabellag2371
      @isabellag2371 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ThumpRat I personally feel lack of education on healthy eating and healthy weight loss was defiantly what lead me and others I knew as a teenager down a rabbit hole of “advice” which was disordered and confusion. I understand your point that education on eating disorders is a different thing and I agree that sometimes “education” particularly accounts from people who had a eating disorder can just end up inspiring more of them and providing “tools” to further them but I also know that if my future self had told my younger self a bit about just how harmful and ineffective my disordered eating would be I would never have done that because while I knew what I was getting into was an Ed to begin with however I thought that the single consequence would be not getting to eat the food I enjoyed. It obviously a delicate and upsetting subject but they are rising rapidly romanticised and I think that teens need to be aware of the horrible reality of them

    • @koo44m
      @koo44m ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ThumpRat i really think that depends on the 'awareness' - obviously it shouldn't be put as simply as "oh x wanted to lose weight quick and this is what they did but it's bad don't do that" with no further explanation, but i feel like in particular with eating disorders more people need to know how damaging it can be, like the heart damage and overall organ damage it can cause, the brain fog and memory deterioriation, osteoporosis, the side effects like hair growth in weird places, tooth decay etc. if people knew more about the horrible lasting effects it can leave, i feel like that awareness would definitely lead to less people trying to copy what they're told about. the thing is with some people, even if you tell them how bad it is, they'll still do it anyway but that's not an issue with spreading awareness, that's people who are already sick, but sadly you can't avoid that.

    Ages 19-22 I had a severe eating disorder. I went from 10 stone to 7 stone in 3 months (bare in mind in 5ft 8) and I worked out 4 hours a day at the gym, was on my feet for 10 hours a day at work then I would walk 4 miles home every. Single. Day. Not to mention I was terrified of food. I felt so much hatred and so disgusting every time I ate. Man I hated my life so much then I’m so so glad I’m out of that phase of my life. I’m 30 now with 2 kids and I could never imagine them treating their body that way

    Interestingly, I had a similar story, but in my late 30's. I restricted calories and ran. I ran my arse off and over a course of a year and a half I lost 140lb. For 5yrs I ran on avg 8 miles a day. While I did add strength training two days a week I didn't focus as much on strength as I should have. I also got lazy on my diet because I was burning so many calories from running that I let running be the dictator on how much I eat. Sadly, I tore my Achillies and also hurt my lower back in a strength training incident that drastically reduced my ability to work out. My diet was so bad and along with age now a year shy of 50 I am back up 80lb and struggling.
    Looking back I wish I talked to a nutritionist and hired a coach to help me with a lifestyle change and guide me on how to properly work out. I am doing that now, but I wish I did it earlier.

Best advice: meal prep (or at least know what you’re going to eat that day so you’re not winging it when you’re starving), weigh yourself every morning, take a progress picture once a month, have a cheat meal once a week (every Saturday for me), and most importantly: enjoy what you eat.

    Really needed this today. So glad I found your channel. A weight loss 'journey' is such a weird thing for me now in my late 30s, as my teens were made up of as little food as I could eat / get away with no one noticing. Doing a 48 hour fast that I kind of 'fell' into, and it brings back a lot of those reminders / feelings. I've been on a medically-recommended 800 calorie a day Huel diet 5 days a week for 11 weeks. I'm below 180lb for the first time in a decade, but I can so easily fall into the mindset of "not enough, not enough". Counting calories and macros, getting good sleep, weightlifting on top of an hour of cardio every day ( ran/ walked 5 miles in 70 min the other day woohoo) and with all of this I find losing weight insanely hard. Yes my volume when training has gone up a lot, and I can withstand way more work and weight, so I am def getting stronger, but I am also addicted to weighing myself everyday, and when I don't see that numberr go down, or instead go up in the mornings, it destorys me...

    I did almost exactly the same things you did on my own weight loss journey two years ago. I cut out most of my food, especially the carbs, and ate almost nothing. Coffee always kept me away from eating. I went from 85kg to only 55kg in a bit more than a year completely without doing any sports or exercise. I was massively underweight but still not happy with my body. I put on a few kilos the year after but didn't change any of my exercise habits. That all changed about four months ago. I went on my first ever run and got a gym membership. I now train nearly every day, am able to run a half marathon in decent time and changed the way I look at food. All of that helped me gain about 15 Kilos in the last 12 months, mostly muscles. All of that being said, our journeys are incredibly similar and you are a great idol of mine. Since then I’ve fluctuated like crazy between 210-270, now I’m on a very dedicated weight loss journey and I’ve lost about 40lbs this year starting at 260.
    I check my weight daily, since its very hard for me to lose weight but VERY easy to gain it. I don’t mind when my midweek weight goes up as long as my Saturday morning weigh in is where I want it to be, and if I go over too much I’ll adjust for the next few days

    My ex-wife and I separated back at the beginning of 2012. One of the reasons for us deciding to call it quits was our different take on health and fitness. Prior to that, I smoked and ate poorly and I wasted my 20s. But even prior to that, I was actually a very physically active person, working out, running, and playing sports on a daily basis.
    So in 2012, after we separated, I got back into working out and eating right seriously. In fact, I did so too seriously. I worked out 6 days a week, and ate as little as possible. I ended going from 287 to 203 in about two months. But I lost a considerable amount of muscle in the process. I was doing some push-ups one day. I had gotten myself back up to 5 sets of 20. This particular day I'm doing them, and I'm on like set 2, and I struggled to get to 9.
    It took me a minute, but then I realized that I'd worked out so hard and eaten so little, that my muscle was being consumed by my body to fuel itself. Oops.
    There is definitely a right way and a wrong way to lose weight. I got back on track, regained the muscle and got to my normal healthy weight of between 230 and 250. Ten years later I'm still doing great.

    Your videos are always motivational Will. I am sidelined for about six weeks from an upcoming surgery on the 25th and I was so damn depressed and feeling useless with my restrictions. I knew it would be difficult of course but the inspiration from your videos makes the time a little easier to stay on track with diet and what little bit that I can do. Thanks for the great content as always!
