@@MyDriftingDesk no thank you, you are litteraly the best person ever and have helped me with my new puppy and helped me be way more productive and positive
Thank you so much! I’m planning on getting an Aussie puppy soon and trying to be as prepared as possible; I’m sure this will be a lifesaver as far as accidents in a rental house will go :)
Thanks for the video. We've had our 9 week old aussie, Banjo, for almost a week. We put the bells next to the door on day one but we didn't give him treats. We rang the bells every time we went out. Unfortunately every time we went out it was both playtime and potty time. The good thing is that in just a few days he learned that the bells mean go outside and he rings them. The bad thing is that he rings them all the time to go outside and play. We are going to use your advice when he rings the bell now. We will leash him, take him to the exact spot where we want him to potty and bring him back in without praise if he doesn't potty in a few minutes. Hopefully that will help. We will obviously give him lots of praise if he does potty!! You're videos have been so helpful!
She's adorable marissa and you are looking amazing ummm I just wanted to say that your vlogs is the best because you are amazing productive stayed safe 😊

Yay! I have been waiting for this one! My aussie mix gal is six months, and we are having getting her to tell us when she needs to go potty. Right now she understands we ring the bell before we go outside, when I walk towards the door with her, she will ring the bell on her own. She won't however go ring the bell on her own to tell me she needs to go out. How did you bridge the gap with Freya between taking her to the bell when you decided to take her out to her ringing the bell on her own? Thank you for this!!! :)
it kinda just takes time! Freya caught on because I made it a "command" at first with saying "Let's go potty" means ring the bells, and ringing the bells means go outside to go potty and when she went potty I connected the dots with "good girl go potty!" and tons of praise and tons of treatos! it took a while for her to ring the bell on her own to signify to go potty. At first she would just ring it for treats and to go outside, but consistency + taking her potty every time she rings it is key! They'll catch on after a while :) 💜
I just started using the bell system with my 6 month old Cavapoo Harper. She's now starting to ring the bell but a lot of times she rings it but when we have to go outside, she doesn't do anything. The buzz word we use when she rings it is "outside". I love my Harper but I'm looking forward her really getting this down.
it definitely takes time! Picture it like bowling with bumpers. She's learning WHAT the bells mean now, since she understands what they DO. you have to use your bumpers, cues, etc. to get her to understand what to do & how they work. :) good luck!
I have a 3 month old Labradoodle. I am trying to use the bell system. He will ring it to go poop but he constantly goes to another room to pee. Not always the same room. I try to take him out at least every hour and a half. Or as soon as he wakes up, about 30 minutes after he eats and lots of other times. What can I do to stop the peeing in the house?
does he potty outside when you take him? If not when you go potty I would use it like a "command" or a "trick" so saying the same thing every time at the door like "time to go potty" and then leash him up and take him to the same spot every time in the yard and then use another "command" like "go potty" or "go pee pee" and then give him 5 minutes to try and go potty. don't play, don't have fun, don't talk to him, just let him sniff in the same general area and wait for him to go potty. if he doesn't in that time slot, go inside and unleash and don't have fun, don't play, don't engage and then wait 5-10 minutes and go through it all again until he goes potty. when he does, make a BIG deal out of it and go crazy with treats and praise and play and then go inside and have more praise, teats, etc. You want to create a positive reason for them to go potty outside while instilling that going outside means going potty. not always play. YOU engage play time outside or walks, not with the bells or not them begging.
Awesome video!! Super informative. I am training my Aussie and I have a quick question. I'm in an apartment and my front door is down some stairs so I can't put bells near the door. I have them at the top of the stairs but I think he is scared of the stairs so he doesn't go near the bells on his own. I assume the answer to my question is yes, lol, but should I put them somewhere he's more comfortable walking to on his own?
Thank you so much for the video! I love it! I do have 1 question, watching your other videos I did notice you used a porch potty grass area on the patio, how did you use that without them getting confused that they can use the potty only on the grass area not the patio? Thanks so much!
when she was little like 8-9 weeks and learning how to use it we would carry her to and from it so she never walked ON the patio, only stepped foot ON the grass, and we would stand there and wait for her to go. she would try and step down every now and again and we would never let her. just using our hands as barriers for her not to be able to jump down so going potty there was the only option. after about 2-3 weeks of being diligent about it and strict she got the hang of it. she didn't start walking to the grass on her own until about 3 months old! 🤍 I hope that's helpful!!!
What about when we need to go on regular walks, not just to the potty spot? Do we have them ring the bell each time at the beginning to see that bells=outside, and then when they start to do it on their own we only go to the potty spot?
I would refrain from letting the bells be an “outside” indicator. YOU should choose & initiate play / walks outside. THEY initiate the potty breaks. So if you’re taking them on a walk, no bells! Just grab their leash / harness & start a new “routine” maybe it’s using the recall “touch” command (I have a video on that on my channel too) to get them to come to you and then leash them & use some verbiage like “let’s go on a walk” so it’s different than potty and then don’t go to their potty spot. Go the other way and go on a true walk. If they go potty on the walk perfect. Praise & treat still. But you’re differentiating walks & play outside from potty breaks. So different words / commands. Different routines. Different places. Etc. I hope that’s helpful!!
Our previous dog learned to ring the bells fairly quickly but our current new 12 week puppy isn't too keen on them. She seems afraid of them. We've even taken them down to the floor to have her sniff them on her terms and rewarded her when she'd put her nose to them. It's been frustrating because she's not giving us any signs she needs to go out. She even backs away from the door when it's time to go out. We take her out every hour or so. Any thoughts?
Can I just check something. When Marisa says “snoot” for the word “snout” is that an American thing or a Marisa thing. Cause in the U.K. we say “snout” like sn-out ( pronounced like in or “out”). I’ve never heard snoot before
We use either but “snoot” is just a “cuter” word people like to use! I won’t say it’s just a Marissa thing because I’ve definitely said stuff like, “Boop the snoot”!
hahah yeah it's definitely not just a me thing, other people say it too but I think it's more of a cute word rather than the correct word lol. boop the snoot is definitely something I say A LOT hahahah 💜
When we just go outside there’s no bell ringing and I initiate that outing. So saying let’s go, getting her leashed up and just go right out to a DIFFERENT spot than they potty. You want to separate play and potty (especially in the beginning and learning stages) but potty we always ring the bells and go to the same potty spot. No play. No “fun”. Praise for pottying then go right back in.
How do you sleep if you’re taking her every single hour? I know it’s a lot of work but for someone like me who already doesn’t sleep- this will not work. But besides that- this is a very cool trick. If only I could get my puppy to actually go potty outside. I got her from the pound and she is very used to going inside and in her crate so to speak. I don’t know what to do
For a bit - you don't hahaha. It just comes with getting a puppy (or a baby for that matter). If you live with someone else, yall can take shifts. So you can sleep in ~2 hour chunks. But it's hard for sure. One of the responsibilities of getting a puppy that needs potty trained.
@@MyDriftingDesk oh update: I did get the peepee bell and she picked it up so fast!!!! She uses it very well! The only Hangup is she also rings it when she just wants to go outside to look around- lol
Super helpful! How did you give Freya access to the bell when she was in her pen? Or did you leave the pen open most of the time? Thanks for the video!
so she didn't have access to the bell while in her pen, but as a puppy she would only spend max 2 hours in there, which is also the max fo going potty so we would let her out of the pen, then ask her to "lets go potty" for her to ring the bells for us and then we would take her potty after her naps in the crate as a puppy!
Serious question. My Aussie sleeps in the room with me. But we have bells on the actual back door he goes out of. Do you recommend having multiple sets of bells, or is this like confusing? He may not always have access to get to the back door because we have a baby gate and then there's my bedroom door. Does the bell mean the same no matter which one they ring?
As long as you train it that way, then yeah you can have multiple sets! You could also have another thing, like a button or something that he can press that still means the same thing, but is only used at night. so he knows the difference and it gets put away during the day and that's when he uses the bells! up to you! they should catch onto bells in a different spot. Freya does! Whenever I take her to someone else's house, if I don't bring the bells she'll go to a door and pretend to hit bells with her nose (because she knows it should be there lol) and then I know to take her out even without the bells. but when I DO bring the bells I just take her to them once, ring them myself and say "go potty" so she knows they're there and where they are and she'll ring them just the same as at home 💚💚
hahah that was hard in the beginning too. rewarding for only booping / touching it and if they attack it, use your correction/no word (mine is ah-ah-ah) and then remove them from it and reward anytime they AREN'T attacking it lol.
we HAD to phase her out of it because our new apartment here doesn't have a balcony for it :/ so we got rid of it. If we still had a balcony I would 100% still be using it lol. It's SO convenient!
What do you do if you are out and about somewhere and she needs to potty? How does she let you know she needs to potty? Like if you are at ya’lls parents, work, a hotel, or wherever with her? Do you take bells everywhere if she is going to be inside??
if we're outside, she just goes and I just kinda keep track of timing and when she might need to go and take her to a grass place and say "Go Potty" and she'll go, since we've kinda turned that into a "command" but Griffin's parents house has a set of bells for her that she uses to let us know she needs to go potty. she hasn't been inside anywhere else, but if we did stay anywhere else (hotel, airbnb, etc.) we would bring bells with us!
Thanks so much for sharing your experience and tips, Marissa! This is super helpful. At 8:36 do you actually praise or say the cue words (go potty, for example) *while* she is going potty? I wonder if that is how you try to associate what “go potty” really means to her. I’m afraid to say anything while my puppy is doing his business or he may stop in the middle! 😅
I do both!! When we get to the potty place I say "go potty" so she knows that THIS is where we go potty and then once she is then I praise and give treats to connect her act of going potty with my cue of "go potty" I hope that's helpful!!
From the start did you give Freya 24/7 access to water (except a few hours before night's sleep)? My Aussie has no bladder control :( She's so good and knows where to go but she cant hold it :(
Honestly not until we moved into this new apartment! so around 7-8 months! Now the water is out and she can have it whenever and it's in her play pen so when we lock her in it, she has water. But at our old apartment she wouldn't have access to it in her crate or play pen ever. We also took it away around 9:00pm because she went to bed at 10pm so to hopefully help with any accidents. 💜
in the beginning I praise with treats for bell ringing and even MORE treats when she goes potty outside! but as time goes on and I can tell she's making the connection then maybe I move to only verbal praise for the bell and keep treats for the potty praise. and then you can just give your marker word/cue when they ring, take them potty then praise like crazy. so slowly backing off of praising for the bells, keeping the potty, then slowing backing off the potty once they're potty trained and understand the bell fully!
I found your channel because I am thinking of adopting a sweet girl. I have a question. What happens if you have her spend the night somewhere else? Do you take the bells with you to that persons house?
yes we do!! we have an extra set at Griffin's parent's house because we go there frequently and they'll watch her for us sometimes, so they have their own set, but if we were to got o an airbnb or something, we would bring them with us for sure!
hi!! my golden doodle only rings the bell when i take her up to it and when i say “let’s go potty” how do i get her to ring it on her own terms instead of when i ask her if she needs to go to the bathroom 😭
they just haven't grasped it yet. I would practice taking them to the door and waiting there for them to ring them before taking them potty. give them time to think it through and try things. if it takes a bit then lure them closer without saying anything until they ring then reward, praise, treat, and go potty. and kinda repeat the process of waiting and letting them think through it.
@@MyDriftingDesk Thanks so much! I have great news, since this comment shes a bell master! whenever I tell people how she rings the bell to let me know she has to use the bathroom theyre always suprised and impressed! she could work on ONLY using it for the bathroom though LOL, sometimes she just wants to play, but were working on correcting that.
Okay this is just smt funny my dog did it was probably my fault but when he started to learn this he would go on the bell he only did it twice but it was funny

Thank you.
Of course!!
what treats do you use? I bought special training treats but my dog does not like them.
Most of the time I used their kibble as training treats and I trained during meal time. If not kibble then I like the Zuke’s Minis!
When do you take your dog outside to play or go for walks without confusing time for potty?
When we just go outside there’s no bell ringing and I initiate that outing. So saying let’s go, getting her leashed up and just go right out to a DIFFERENT spot than they potty. You want to separate play and potty (especially in the beginning and learning stages) but potty we always ring the bells and go to the same potty spot. No play. No “fun”. Praise for pottying then go right back in.
@@MyDriftingDesk thank you !! Your videos are so helpful 🙏
when Freya would have accidents in the house would you then make her ring the bell and take her outside? or what would you do?
Yes!! If she had an accident and I would be catching her doing it I would grab her and ring the bells and then run her outside 😂
The only Hangup is she also rings it when she just wants to go outside to look around- lol
where is the gate in the background from?!
WALMART!! it's in the baby section as an actual baby gate and it's an expandable one for wide doorways/hallways!
@@MyDriftingDesk thank you!
Freya is sooo cute omg😍😍😍😍😍😍
❤️❤️❤️ THANK YOU!!!
Can u please do videos of how you taught her the tricks she knows
yes! ♥️
I just set up bells on the door just this afternoon. A Border Collie that's just under 10 months old.
Good luck!! I love this skill!! It’s so helpful! 🤞🏼
How do you get her to not tear up the bells? My 9 wk old puppy just wants tear them up.
hahah that was hard in the beginning too. rewarding for only booping / touching it and if they attack it, use your correction/no word (mine is ah-ah-ah) and then remove them from it and reward anytime they AREN'T attacking it lol.
I’ll try this with my 1 year old Doberman I just adopted 😬🤞🏼
YAY! good luck!! it's one of my fav things I've taught my aussie!
@@MyDriftingDesk thank you. Beautiful Aussie by the way 🫶🏼
Our puppy’s name is Freya too!
Awwww 🥹 already a cutie then hahah
When Freya turns one you should do a birthday dog haul or dog party! 😂
I definitely want to do a party hahaha
Since TH-cam has yet to give us the heart react i am just gonna leave this here ❤
💜💜 thank you!!
I know you used the grass turf on your porch. Do you still use this or did you completely phase her out of that?
we HAD to phase her out of it because our new apartment here doesn't have a balcony for it :/ so we got rid of it. If we still had a balcony I would 100% still be using it lol. It's SO convenient!
@@MyDriftingDesk Ah gotcha! I live in Colorado so I feel like I need to get the turf for those winter months lol
Interesting concept. A friend of mine tried to do this as well. But his dog is too smart and abused it to just go for a walk instead of potty :D
hahahah I love that!
Freya is so big now! when is her birthday? ( btw i love your videos)
January 3rd! 💜💜
@@MyDriftingDesk so close to mine!!
hi if you don't mind where did you get Freya at
I linked her breeder in the video where I brought her home at 8 weeks old in the description box! 💜
@@MyDriftingDesk thank you!!
So if they ring the bell, but don’t go potty outside. Do you praise them for ringing the bell, but don’t praise them for not going potty?
Like praise them every time they ring the bell. But only praise them when they actually go potty outside?
in the beginning I praise with treats for bell ringing and even MORE treats when she goes potty outside! but as time goes on and I can tell she's making the connection then maybe I move to only verbal praise for the bell and keep treats for the potty praise. and then you can just give your marker word/cue when they ring, take them potty then praise like crazy. so slowly backing off of praising for the bells, keeping the potty, then slowing backing off the potty once they're potty trained and understand the bell fully!
I found your channel because I am thinking of adopting a sweet girl. I have a question. What happens if you have her spend the night somewhere else? Do you take the bells with you to that persons house?
yes we do!! we have an extra set at Griffin's parent's house because we go there frequently and they'll watch her for us sometimes, so they have their own set, but if we were to got o an airbnb or something, we would bring them with us for sure!
would you say freya would bite a lot when she was younger? i feel like i haven’t seen a lot of biting from her. just curious!
oh HECK YES hahah. she was a little Devil until about 4-5 months and once she started losing her baby teeth lol
hi!! my golden doodle only rings the bell when i take her up to it and when i say “let’s go potty” how do i get her to ring it on her own terms instead of when i ask her if she needs to go to the bathroom 😭
they just haven't grasped it yet.
@chez5671 omg YAY!!! So so happy it worked for yall!! Freya did the same thing in the beginning 😂😂
I’m trying to teach my dog Freyja the same thing.. WISH MY LUCK!
GOOD LUCK!!!
I'll be trying this out with two 10 month old puppies who only really learned to use potty pads😅
This week my pup is getting nurtured
aww good luck! I hope all goes well! 💜
Freya is getting so big omg
I know it's CRAZY!
What’s a snoot?

I’m training an 8 week old cavoodle and it is so hard she goes well then it goes down hill 🤦♀️
We are still learning
It takes time!!! didn't really start seeing GOOD results from Freya until 4-5 months old! YOU GOT THIS! 💜
