    Good times! Just a beautiful local. Gotta say those "Arctic Oven" are Best tents ever! Experienced these tents during a 100 mile float in western Alaska during a late fall monsoon and they rock! No condensation, and they hold like the rock of gibraltor! A bit heavy, but the two layers with the Vapex that breathes and the heavy nylon fly are the perfect combo.

    A very satisfying number of fish caught. Not so many that it looks too easy, but enough that it was exciting. We know why Huddy is surprised on the occasions when you don't bring a catch home! Also liked that the conditions weren't too miserable.

      Ya, I think I well it was pretty good weather wise. I’ve been in the northern Yukon at this time of tear when it was -38 . Probably the coldest we had was -20. The fishing was great. The third day of the trip is was a little slow though but we probably would have caught more lake trout if we’d stayed put it fried jogging in other places for lake trout (or pike) and no have tried for Burnot.

    good stuff Jim! I always smile when the big one gets away its the way it should be and how memories are made. Burbot are one of the more elusive fish so good on you guys for doing some exploring. Grass is not always greener but it sometimes is. The term for the sonar you were using is "forward facing sonar". Its becoming a hotly debated topic in the angling realm these days even being discussed for a ban in some US states. It is a powerful tool. I hope you guys are using circle hooks for the dead sets or else those don't really count as releases. tight lines!

    • @thylacine123
      @thylacine123 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      the orange color of the laker is due to the diet. Like salmon, those lakers are feeding on freshwater crustaceans that contain Xanthins (orange color). This usually only exists in very remote undeveloped watershed as those food webs are sensitive to pollution. I smiled when you said they taste better because i could not agree more!

    • @JimBairdAdventurer
      @JimBairdAdventurer  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’ve read that about the fresh water frustrations and the orange fin colour. I didn’t know I was technically called a forward facing sonar. This one is made by Garmin and is marketed as the Panoptix essentially a more powerful fish finder. What do you mean using circle hooks for the dead sets? For the Burbot lines?

    • @thylacine123
      @thylacine123 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@JimBairdAdventurer Yep! Panoptix is the brand name. Its actually pretty old tech that has just now been optimized for consumer market by garmin and others. The added power is that you can scan under the ice a considerable distance from the hole and get accurate distance/depth/direction of marks whereas a conventional cone fish finder can just scan straight down and only tells you depth of a mark. I used to work with similar devices in grad school to study shoaling behavior in silver carp. About the circle hooks....its an ethical consideration. It is my opinion that it is asinine to make people crimp down barbs yet its still legal to dead set live bait without circle hooks???? Circle hooks are a certain shape that prevents gut-hooking when a fish is allowed to completely swallow a bait (dead set). The hook will always set in the side of the mouth which causes minimal trauma compared to a gut hook. They are common practice in marine fisheries for many reasons. I think that going forward when you showcase fishing content like dead-setting it would be good to use circle hooks and explain to possibly naive viewers that this is best practice if you do not intend to kill everything you catch. In this fishery this is not really a problem due it being remote and very healthy and all but it all matters to bring collective awareness up and i know you can be a great ambassador to ethical angling! Fish are vertebrates and they certainly feel pain, anyone who says otherwise is full of shit.

    • @JimBairdAdventurer
      @JimBairdAdventurer  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ya, in Ontario it’s the law. In the Yukon you don’t have to and most don’t. When you mention ontario to a Yukoner, often the answer is “ontario, so many rules” same with NWT and Nunavut. It has to do with warmth to an extent, sometimes it’s so cold there no helmets are warm enough.

    • @JimBairdAdventurer
      @JimBairdAdventurer  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Well these are conservation waters in the Yukon. So, you can’t keep anything over 26” and barbless hooks are used. If you don’t release some fish, you will never be good enough to learn how to fish and then you won’t get many catch and cooks. Also, the larger fish are old and deposit large amounts of eggs or milt while passing on their string genes. They also don’t taste good. Consider the amount of by catch that is discarded in commercial fishing as well. So, I’m not sure you’re less “guilty” when buying fish from the store.
